Wonderful book! A friend of mine loaned me her copy, but I had to go out and buy one for myself. Beautiful photography and inside stories about women who were brave enough to carve out their own space and call it that, "Mine!'. Many women I know would love to find the courage to do this, but don't. We all need a little corner to call our very own. I have one now thanks to Ms. Casson Madden. Old Fashioned Type Kitchens
I think the person who reviewed the book as too old, misunderstood the book's intent.The book is about barn kitchens, retro kitchens, cottage kitchens, farm type kitchens.Depends on what you want your kitchen to look like.Not all of us want a light beech modern kitchen that looks sterile.

Very dated
I didn't know when I ordered this that it was such an old book. It's not that the kitchens are bad but the book and the rooms in it are so dated. I feel that I did not get my money's worth. I assumed that the book would give me some fresher ideas than these. A real disappointment.

THIS BOOK IS EXCELLENT, I THINK EVERY AUTHOR SHOULD READ IT.

Lots of simple suggestions to add character to your home.

Not so practical solutions
The subtitle reads "Inspiring Ideas and Practical Solutions for Creating a Beautiful Bathroom." The photos may be inspiring, but the book certainly has no practical solutions. There are lots of beautifulphotos of bathrooms (most from New York and surrounding area); however, thephotos were selected more for artistic content than because they describedthe layout or features of the bathrooms. For example there are nicecloseups of brushes and sponges, a pile of toilet paper rolls, etc. Thesephotos cannot possibly help the reader in search of practical solutions.Similarly, only 6 of the descriptions include floor plans. As for thebook's advice on building a bathroom: find a contractor or architect withwhom you can work, and be sure to shop around. There are a few pages withb&w photos of bath fixtures only, but the listings only include a fewof the most expensive styles. The resource guide is almost of no value. Itis a directory listing of suppliers and architects (without web listings)and nothing more. If you want to look at nice pictures of some very nicelyfinished and expensive bathrooms, this could be the book for you, but ifyou want any help with the practical design, construction, materialselection, layout, etc. look elsewhere. ... Ideas, Pictures, Variety of Styles!
Getaways provides 224 pages of large, gorgeous, color pictures.There are antiques, piles of books, bedcoverings, lamps, gardens, accents, and fixtures... there are a variety of styles displayed and too much to mention. Each picture creates its own feeling and it is easy to pick & choose to make your own perfect 'getaway'.We used some basic ideas for wallcoverings, flooring, curtains, and lighting to make our perfect little escape!

A Ton Of Great Decorating And Design Ideas!
I saw this book in an expensive little shop in Gatlinburg, Tennessee last August, and later bought it cheaper over the internet. After reading several negative reviews here, and knowing the quality of this volume, I can't understand why people would not love this book. Contrary to what two reviewers state here, it is not a small volume and the photographs are extremely well done. They range from a picturesque dock out over a body of water to sunrooms, bedrooms, libraries, old desks, etc, with associated text, and most here can be done by people with any decent and modest budget. A TRUE GETAWAY
Ms. Madden captured the essence of getting away, and right in your own home!! I thoroughly enjoyed this book; it gave me several ideas that I could apply to my own living situation. Old news
There is nothing new here, and what is here is a mess when it comes to how the book is organized.The author (and I admit I don't know who she is)doesn't seem to know what she's talking about because her style categories are ill defined, so the book comes off as an anything-but-helpful mishmash of pretty rooms. If you want real decorating help, keep looking.

Good for true beginning decorators
Many people are familiar with Chris Madden's work by now, particularly if they are Oprah fans or pay any attention to the style world.If so, this book won't be much help in refining or defining their personal decorating style.However, if the thought of decorating your home space is overwhelming, if your rooms look like a mish-mash of things that likely shouldn't be there, this will help you sort through what you are drawn to, and make better long-range decisions in purchasing furniture, paint, and the trickiest part for most people, what to include (and edit out) in accessories to "make a mood" in your home. I haven't read this book yet.... but
I can't wait to read it!!!I think she is just FAB... and I'm sure I'll get tons out of it!Read more

DISAPPOINTING
This book features some pictures of a bunch of different bedrooms.Period. Bedrooms
Very nicely photographed and detailed illustrations.However, doesn't give a lot of hints or guidelines to creating the same effects in your own spaces.But overall, a very nice reference book for ideas and inspirations.Would have loved it with actual floor plans of the rooms shown. ... Read more

Hugely disappointing
this book is a huge disappointment. i expected more for my money . i am ready to redo my living room so i bought this book. i don't know the author, but the topic was what i was looking for. the book doesn't help me much. it's a scrapbook of living room photos & many of those don't look like the way people really live. and there isn't much real help in planning your own room.

All smoke and mirrors
Anyone hoping to find innovative design ideas here is going to be disappointed. The cover photo is very appealing but unfortunately that is where the interest ends. One certainly "cannot tell [this] book by its cover." Once open the authors do not provide anything "new" as the title suggests. Instead they have only compiled other designers' work (they have notdesigned any of the rooms) and have not even bothered to add any original thought or decorating ideas to the text. Why did they "write" this book? Ms. Madden and her co-writer, Ms. Hill have underestimated how transparent their lack of effort and content are andare foolish to think that readers will not see through their deception.

What's new about these?
I admit I don't know who Chris Maddon is but I liked the idea of this book so I bought it. I've gone back and forth through it but have never determined yet what exactly is new about these rooms. It looks like a simple collection of living rooms without rhyme or reason.I expect a lot more from a book than that and a lot more obvious effort on the part of the author in making me understand the point of the book and what ideas are in it for me. ...
