4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for knitting baby sweaters!
Well use of yarn (Debbie Bliss) to make the final sweater look high quality and attractive on the babies in the photos.
4-0 out of 5 stars A variety of classic-looking projects
I really admire that this book doesn't try to cram in a "how to knit" chapter in the very beginning. Those hurried instructions never do justice to someone who's never knitted. Therefore, don't buy this book hoping that it will contain a chapter teaching you how to knit, because it doesn't.After two pages devoted to general knitting considerations, the patterns begin.Unlike Debbie Bliss's "Quick baby knits", which features mainly long-sleeved sweaters, this book has a variety of projects including hats, a scarf, blankets, a vest, sweaters (of course), pants, booties, a stuffed toy, three little dresses, and a little bag.Patterns look simple, classic, elegant, not too gaudy, and the skills used include cables, Fair Isle, beads, stripes, and embroidery. My impression of the projects is that they are for an intermediate knitter.Items presented are for newborn-3 year olds, and most can be used for either boys or girls.

3-0 out of 5 stars Recycled
She does beautiful baby clothes, traditional and delicate. But the pictures are more enchanting than the garments themselves. They are recycled, a habit with her. I love the pictures, but maybe I should frame and hang them instead of try to make them. It seems to me she should stop putting out books with overly similar patterns and fix the issues she's having with her instructions. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I would not buy this book again
I'm not a big fan of this book, really. Here's why:
4-0 out of 5 stars Great beginner's book!
I've tried to learn how to knit over the years from 3 very experienced knitter with no success.I gave up and just settled with crocheting with lots of success. Then I found this book in my storage and decided to give knitting one last try. After sitting down with it for a weekend, I've now learn the basic stitches and am working on the baby blanket pattern!(I'm not doing the color work though, just the blanket with the heart design.)I've even tried most of the basic patterns with great success as well.
4-0 out of 5 stars Best for those with some experience and children to knit for
I really enjoy the way Debbie Bliss's How to Knit is set up like a knitting course with each chapter building on the next. The book is a series of workshops covering a comprehensive list of knitting areas -basics, simple stitch patterns, Aran stitches, color work, lace, entrelac, decorative details, designing, and finishing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful designs, and not too complicated.
It is amazing how Debbie Bliss can create new designs, and still keep clean simple lines.I don't really like 'fussy' or cutesy sweaters, so this book is perfect. Most of the designs are like you would find in an upscale children's store, BUT the patterns are actually pretty simple.I would give the book 5 stars, but there aren't any schematics in the book (which I find very useful).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I love every pattern in this book. They are all pretty trendy and updated fashions.

3-0 out of 5 stars Schematics????
I do wish more of DB's books had diagrams.Schematics are essential for gaining a quick understanding of shape and fit of a pattern. Many of her patterns feature photographs that do not adequately reveal details such as the type of sleeve join. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Overall for Beginners
I have been knitting for the past five years and found this book to be a wonderful resource for beginners patterns and reference for basic knitting. The sketches of finishing stitches really helped me perfect my finishing, which I had been having trouble perfecting with other knitting books. The patterns are beautiful and modern, although if you are not using Debbie Bliss yarns make sure to use comparable yarns as far as the ply is concerned. The only reason that I wouldn't give the book a 5 is that there are several mistakes in some patterns. Some more recently printed copies have these corrected, but after receiving your copy I would reccomend double checking the print against the corrections noted on Debbie Bliss' website.Aside from that this is a wonderful book and I highly reccomend to beginning knitters.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a surprise!
I bought this book sight unseen as a "twofer."To my surprise it is THE best book full of practical, simple patterns for babies from newborn (a hard size to find) through 24 months.I highly recommend it for your knitting library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific designs for beginners
I hadn't knitted in over 20 years and now that I'm expecting, I saw a Debbie Bliss pattern in the UK parenting magazine "Junior" and thought the sweater was so cute that I'd give it a try. I bought some Rowan yarn from a local shop and started knitting. (You can use other yarns, but you need to make a tension square as she instructs you to in the beginning.) The sweater turned out so cute that I bought this book, in spite of the warnings that her patterns are hard to read, and I have already made the hat and booties and have ordered some of her yarn for the blanket and another sweater.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hannah Broitman - Avid Knitter
The baby patterns in this book were good.In fact, the reason for buying the book was because of the baby patterns. However, the patterns for the adults were not exciting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practiced beginner projects that make you look experienced
I haven't knitted for 15 years (which basically makes me a beginner again) and wanted to pick it back up now that I'm home with our new baby. Because I didn't want to spend months just knitting scarves but knowing I wasn't ready to attempt complicated designs, I tried this book. I practiced some stiches on scrap yarn, then started with one of the infant sweaters. It was fairly easy as long as I took my time at some of the shaping areas. The outcome was wonderful even though I used less-expensive yarn (Debbie Bliss yarns are beautiful but expensive) that had the same gauge. All of the designs are charming - most are for infants and toddlers with a few for adult women. The patterns are easy to read and I especially like that she includes finished measurements so that I could knit in a few extra rows for my daughter who is a bit taller than the standard measurements. So if you are a beginning knitter who is now comfortable with common stitches you can knit these designs and end up with more than just another scarf in your closet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Winner!!!
I LOVE this book. I must admit that I do own all that Debbie Bliss has published-- but this is really a great book. I am already making the Fair Isle Dress for my daughter-- and I LOVE the mohair pillows and throw. Also some adorable layette items,Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute designs for people with sewing/finishing experience
I'm a relatively new knitter and I bought this book thinking I could make a toy for my nephew. The toys are very cute and come in a variety of easier and more complex styles.
3-0 out of 5 stars spotty information, but very cute designs
The patterns in this book are all knitted in flat pieces, on straight needles (usually US #3 with DK weight yarn). This means that there is a lot of sewing to do to finish them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Love the Ballerina Rabbit
I have just finished the ballerina rabbit for my little ballerina's 6th birthday. It came out excellent, and only took a few evenings to make.I substituted yarns with no problem and added buttonholes for buttons because I don't like the ties.Next project from this book will be the dalmation, changed to blue with white spots. It looks like it will tuck very neatly into my 3-yr-old son's arms.A tip: try using leftover matching yarn to stuff knitted animals; that way you won't have to worry about any white stuffing showing through. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT,LOVE IT,LOVE IT! So simple, Yet STUNNING DESIGNS
I just LOVE this book.I borrowed it from the library originally and decided to buy it as it has such simple designs that are super fast to knit.My favourite completed project is a little bow-tied bolero jacket which I made in a lovely scarlett red pure wool from Australia. It looks fantastic and gets compliments everytime my daughter wears it.It is a simple stocking and garter stitch pattern which more than rewards you for the minimal time it took to make.I am off on a buying trip tomorrow to buy the yarn to make the littled beaded cardigan in pale blue cashmerino with glass sead beads embroidered on.I have chosen these designs as they were the only ones which went to a size 24-36 months.I will start on some of the newborn sized items as baby gifts next.I have found no mistakes in the instructions thus far as they are simple, clear and concise but I like that you can check on debbie's website and get a complete list of amendments for all her pattern books typos. At least she provides this as many authors dont!!Highly recommended has simple through to more complicated deigns.Happy knitting!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars too cute
I am giving this four stars because I haven't made any of the bears yet. However the pictures are too cute for words and I can't wait to make one.I rarely have problems with Debbie Bliss patterns and do not anticipate problems with these.

3-0 out of 5 stars not much variety
The instructions are clear enough, however I was hoping for more size varieties, 4" - 20".I am still looking for a tiny knitted bear pattern.
4-0 out of 5 stars At last a book with good-looking teddy bears ...
I knitted one of the bears (English gentleman bear) and two sets of clothing. The end product looks the same as the pictures - the bear and clothes are adorable.I had no problems with the patterns for they have been correctly written down.Because there are no diagrams/drawings of pieces with dimensions, I believe these knittings are for intermediate to advanced knitters.I can't wait to see my four year old granddaughter on Christmas day when she'll open up this gift! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good patterns -- bad book design
This book has adorable, as-yet-untried-by-me, knitting patterns, but one of the worst designs I have seen. The front of the book has lovely photos of each pattern clumped together with text on them in big letters which gives the name of the design and "See Page such and such," which, in many cases fade into the photo. The bigger problem arises when you are looking at the pattern, which tells you the number of the page of the photo -- but the photo pages are not paginated at all which makes that useless and makes you have to count backwards from the first pattern page (page 36).

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute Patterns- Bad Instructions
I made the pig booties which certainly turned out cute. However, the pattern lacked a tension gauge (which is as fundamental as needle size) and didn't have any diagrams to show the knitter how to piece the body of the bootie together. Her patterns are really adorable and I would buy the book again. But if it ever gets into reprint adjustments should be made.

5-0 out of 5 stars Debbie Bliss is THE kid's knit designer
A friend of mine has a cute 2 year old and she knit the barnyard duck sweater for him. (This kid was leaning out of his stroller at 3 months of age, waiting to see the ducks on the river that runs through the center of town. He'd go wild when he saw them. Unbelievable. ) Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Many Useful Projects
I found many projects I wanted to make in this book.So far, I have made the beanie hat, baby top with seed stitch trim, child's smock and beaded mocassins.Generally, I found the instructions easy to follow. The baby designs are adorable.THe only project I had some trouble with were the mocassins. The beads were too small to slip onto the yarn and knit the way the instructions called for so I just sewed them on afterwards (which is how some of the beads were supposed to be done anyway.)The smock pattern took some getting used to and I wrote out the pattern rows on individual note cards so I could flip them over and know which row I had to do next.I would recommend this book to new and experienced knitters.

1-0 out of 5 stars Impossible-to-read typeface
This book has clear and precise photographs and knitting techniques. The problem is that the typeface chosen is so hard to read, making it almost impossible to follow the patterns. The font is too fine and too faded to read clearly.I found my eyes were straining to read the opaque font. When I gave the page more light, the shine on the page completely obliterated the text.Very frustrating!

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful baby/kid patterns and fun texture knitting
I am not a color knitter so I appreciate the emphasis this book places on texture. As a novice, I found the stitch glossary informative but I don't think you could learn to knit w/ just this book. All the patterns specify her special yarn, but at the back of the book there was a glossary that gave weight information. The baby/child patterns are adorable (simple cap, seater, cable cardigan) and do-able and there is a beutiful texture sampler afghan that I am excited to try. This book is a staple in my knitting library. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful and timeless patterns
I've been knitting for about ten years and thought I had already seen all of the best books of traditional knitting patterns, and was delighted to discover this one severalmonths ago.I don't know how this one escaped my notice for so long, but seeing that no one else has reviewed it here, I'm wondering if it is because this book never gained popularity amongst knitters. If so, that is a shame, because this book is loaded with stunningly beautiful traditional sweater patterns, some of the best I have seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classy, stylish baby clothes
I found this collection of patterns very refreshing. After finding such a wealth of "quick knitting" patterns that call for large needles and chunky acrylic yarn (yielding, in my opinion, ugly and cheap-looking baby clothes), it's nice to see patterns for beautiful, classy, stylish baby clothes created at a fine gauge suitable to a small body. I also love the color choices shown in the photographs, as well as the use of natural fiber yarns like wool and cotton. Of course, the knitter can use whatever color and fiber he/she chooses, but I appreciate the inspiration to knit for babies using colors other than pastels and gaudy brights and fibers other than acrylic. I'm eagerly awaiting the next Bliss book!

4-0 out of 5 stars great simple designs, but not easy
The other reviews are correct in my opinion: not necessarily for beginners, but nice designs. I have knitted for many years and these sweaters are not difficult, but they don't exactly whip up the way other patterns do. I love a couple of the designs in this book very much. I have probably knitted 5 of the patterns and some of them several times. I seem to always come back to this book, even though I agree that the explanations are a bit confusing sometimes. I recently read the intro to the book and found it a bit condescending the way she made it sound like you were a beginner if you wanted to knit from this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Features classic patterns for the entire family
I really admire that this book doesn't try to cram in a "how to knit" chapter in the very beginning. Those hurried instructions never do justice to someone who's never knitted. Therefore, don't buy this book hoping that it will contain a chapter teaching you how to knit, because it doesn't.The patterns start right away, and they are for every member of the family - babies to adults. For babies we are presented with several sweaters, a hat, a dress, booties, and blankets. For children there are patterns for a dress, several sweaters, and a scarf. For adults there are patterns for several sweaters and two bags. While many baby and child patterns can be used for boys and girls, the adult patterns are all for women. All the items are made of cotton, of course, which as such a classic, smooth look.It really adds to the classic, clean, and simple look the items already have as a result of the pattern. My impression of the projects is that they are for an intermediate knitter, and they use all the basic skills:Fair Isle, color, cables, etc. This book is sure to please because all the items are beautiful and there's something here for everyone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
Beautiful designs! Lots of style for all ages, elegant cables, lace and bobbles. Must see pics! But the women's patterns are all small, nothing larger than 38", which is what my size 3 sister is! Other than that, she again peddles her expensive low yardage yarn line. Worth the price overall.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Ideas
This book is so beautifully presented it should be marketed as a coffee table book. The patterns are really beautiful and very usable around the home. I would recommend this book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars not inspirational
This book is geared more towards the beginner, as the variety and patterns in this book are not really inspirational to more experienced knitters. This is quite a let down of a book, although there are a few pieces I may someday knit.

2-0 out of 5 stars Celtic? Nah
What a lovely book this is, full of happy blond children lavishly photographed amidst charmingly rustic settings. However, the knitwear they're modeling, although clean-lined and attractive, isn't "Celtic" at all. Yes, there is one Aran-ish tunic in the collection, but unless you are a thirteen-year-old, it won't fit you. A terrific disappointment!

3-0 out of 5 stars A Little Bland
As is true for all of Debbie Bliss' books, Celtic Knits contains beautiful photos and an attractive, accessible layout.Celtic Knits has a pretty good variety of patterns - mostly adults, but also a few child and baby patterns.Be warned, however, that the women's patterns seem to run on the small side; you might have to adapt if you want to make other sizes.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for special projects!
I agree that the lack of diagrams and measurements make for some moments of head-scratching, but overall, I think it's a decent books. The designs are not your average baby sweater...there are some excellent pieces that are sure to become treasured hand-me-downs. The patterns call for premium yarns, but if you're going to go to all the trouble of making something like the frilled edge crossover sweater (my favourite), why not indulge and use ahigh quality yarn? 4-0 out of 5 stars Good-but could be great
Debbie Bliss did a good job, but I would like to see more colorful sweaters for kids. The designs are simple and cute, but not irresistable.

5-0 out of 5 stars inspirational
i found this book at the library, and after my maximum renewal time i had to go buy it myself. as a beginner+ knitter, i found many projects in here that i a) could make b) *wanted* to make and c) enjoyed making! it's nice to see children's wear that isn't frou-frou, but has interesting detailing. debbie bliss has inspired me to continue knitting (when i would have otherwise put it down for lost!) i highly suggest this book to anyone, if not for the patterns, for the beautiful photos. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just About Perfect
The patterns in this book are clear, accurate, and well laid out. The designs -- sweaters, hats, jackets, and playsuits -- are varied and beautiful, classic without being dull. They are written in the traditional way, without charts or diagrams, but there is a glossary of abbreviations. There are no basic knitting instructions.2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I am a relatively new knitter, and I bought this book because I had heard good things about this designer. I did think that several items in the book were cute, but for the most part, the designs seemed overly complicated and hard to follow. I would probably not make sweaters as complex as the ones shown for myself, let alone for a small child that would only wear a sweater a handful of times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Challenging but beautiful designs
I own this book and have used it to make baby gifts.Be warned that the sizing is quite generous....my average sized daughter was still wearing a sweater from this book supposedly meant for a 12 month old baby when shefit into a 3T! ... Read more
