3-0 out of 5 stars Did They Say Rose Bible?
It would take volumes to cover the multitudes of roses that are out there, but, with a name like "The Rose Bible" I expected more than this book delivered.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book
I am an avid gardner and appreciate a book that tantalizes me with new ideas for my garden.Although I already have some 18 roses in my garden, this book has inspired me to create even more space for more roses, and collect some amazing bourbons and antiques that are out there.I originally purchased this book to research new climbers, and found that and more! The photos are captivating, and the author provides a great history on the various species. In addition, I feel like the author does an outstanding job of explaining the positives and negatives of roses he highlights.I have reread the chapter on "Fifty Immortal Roses" numerous times, and can't seem to put this book down.I can't wait to start digging in the dirt. Very inspirational!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the beginner
Make no bones about it, this book is about roses the author enjoys. This is not a bad thing. He gives you a good concise history on roses, introducing you to the various types of roses grown through time. He gives great advise on planting, pruning and maintenance over the year. Then there are the pictures- lots of them, and beautifully photographed. Yes there is a whole chapter on his favorite roses (many of them tried and true) but hundreds more are referred to with photos and text. This is an ejoyable book, fun to flip through, but still has the information a beginner needs to know when choosing roses. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A handy little gem
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves his/her cutting garden, and starts dreaming of the possibilities the day after Christmas! This isn't an book you get lost in all day while your family goes hungry, it's a handy and informative book with a simple mission-- pointing you to the best varieties to cut and bring inside, but with beautiful photos of every entry that you will refer to again and again.I like the fact that this book is small; so is my yard, and there are more must-tries here than I can accomodate any time soon. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction Or Gift
This is a great little book for someone who is new to the world of old roses.I am responsible for a historic site (Historic Brattonsville) that is in the middle of restoring its 19th century pleasure garden.Roses were a foundation of such gardens and this book, along with many others, is helping me to restore them. While serious folk would probably find it lacking the depth they are looking for, there are still some juicy info tidbits that they would surely appreciate. The illustrations a beautiful.Of course that's a given in most all rose books! The thing I like best about this book is that it is perfect for gifting. Its small, concise, and inspiring. What more would someone want? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My first reference for rose growing.
Short sweet and to the point.Reddell covers all of the basics of growingroses from selecting varieties to preparing the planting hole to annualcare.Particularly handy and unique is the appendix which gives rosegrowing tips from master growers in each of the 9 USDA zones--finally abook that helps you grow roses where you live.

5-0 out of 5 stars Roses in Quebec? We must be mad!
This book is one of the most useful - practical - "how to" rose books I have come across in many years of research. In brief, not particularly technical language, the author takes you through the year giving excellent advice, tips and recipies along the way.The additional advice from experts in most zones enables you to adjust your plans for your own climate. It's pocket size ensures that I carry my copy around with me for regular reference. My roses have never looked better and I include some fairly tender varieties in a zone 4b (the Laurentian mountains). For beginners or experts, this really is a "must have".I also recomment "Tender Roses for Tough Climates" by Douglas Green for any other climate-challenged (as in very, very cold) roseophiles. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A palette of fragrances
Rayford Clayton Reddell and Robert Galyean had a fine idea when they thought of this book: Growing Fragrant Plants. Reddell (owner of Garden Valley Ranch, a commercial flower ranch in the San Francisco area) and Galyean (head gardener of its fragrance garden) have devised a rich palette of fragrant plants. 5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite rose book
This book is a great introduction to the wonderfully addictive world of growing roses. The author slowly succumbed, starting out using every square inch of patio at his san francisco townhouse for roses, and now ownsa large ranch in Petaluma which is an ARS test garden. The book dealsmatter-of-factly with planting, growing, and pruning, giving you optionsand alternatives based on your climate, attitudes towards pesticides, available time, etc.Naming one's favorite rose is a tough question; mr.reddell provides a dozen or so of his, with detailed observations that havehelped me be more critical in selecting the roses I grow.Hisencouragement to show roses led me into my first rose shows - i enjoyed theexperience hugely and have nearly a dozen ribbons now to show for it (notrophies yet...).I recommend this book as a starting point for anyone whois beginning to grow roses, and would like to be as effective as they canwithin the time they have available. It's been very valuable for me. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Mini-roses - in the dark still...
This is Not the book you want to buy, if Any of the following apply: you need specific information on container-planting (more than a few lines); are new to rose-growing; you want more info than the book will provide (nobibliography). I was disappointed in this book.I am a new owner ofminiature rose bushes, and wanted a fairly comprehensive volume to explainall aspects of container planting, watering, feeding, how to remove budsand when, etc. This book seemed more like a off-the-cuff attempt atmoney-making without any attempt at sharing real knowledge of the miniaturerose and its care.An experienced rose-grower will likely know all thatis contained in these pages, and the novice best look elswhere - as Ishall. The pictures are very professionally taken and are pleasant toview, but I would have preferred more descriptives along with photos - e.g.types of soil roses in pictures were planted, feeding schedule of thoseflowers shown, or something along those lines. The writing style was notclear, and seemed contradictory as well.Definately geared to the coffetable, not the serious grower. The search continues for the perfectrose...mine are dying as I type, thanks in part to my choice of this book, plus a LITTLE help from my general ignorance! ...
