5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect History book for a visual learner
This is a great book. It is very readable, and even if you are not particularly interested in landscape design/architectural history, Elizabeth Barlow Rogers will inspire you. This book follows landscape and cultural architecture through history and makes me wonder why all schools - from elementary on up - don't attack history lessons from such a practical and fascinating point of view.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great coffee table book, bad text book
I had to purchase this book for my LA class and it's a bug squasher. While the pictures are impressive, and the coverage of the subject in-depth, the author can be long winded. What she covers in a page could have easily been said in a couple of paragraphs.I also don't care for the glossy pages. While they make the pictures look nice, reading the fine text that it's printed can give one a headache.

4-0 out of 5 stars A note about the photos
Very well researched history of landscape design. However, I wouldn't go so far as to describe the photographs as 'breathtaking' as does another reviewer. There are many of them, all interesting, but almost all (apart from a brief intro sequence) only quarter or eighth page size.As a result, there is no image as impressive as the front cover. This is my only quibble, and the reason for 4 not 5 stars: why have a book so big and then not make full use of its size to present such a visually-based subject? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is simply a good book
I use this book at school for a class called "golf course organization and maintenace." It is geared directly to golf courses. The fact of the matter is that it covers every imaginable aspect of golf course maintenance and operations, and I do mean everything. In my opinion there is no other book more valuable for persons training to be golf course superintendents. If your already a superintendent I'm sure it would still be a wise decision to purchase this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive
Very complete and up to date information on Arboriculture.Chapters are well organized, highlighting what you need to know. Does a great job of covering the basics, but also gets into details and is fairly technical, without becoming unreadable.A must have reference book for the Landscaper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Overflowing with information
Arboriculture is a science and art that is made up of many different contributing factors. This book does a very good job of covering them all.Any one of the chapters could be expanded into a book in itself. This thoroughly researched and written book is for the person who wants all of their information in one place. It is a textbook for the technically minded arborist, tree surgeon, tree farmer, or hobbyist.Don't look for this book to be entertaining or philosophical.Instead, buy this book for the knowledge held within. There is a lot to be learned from it.Every single page is filled with facts, figures, methods, and recommendations. You will find yourself reading every page a second or third time in order to catch it all.I refer back to this book on a regular basis, because there is no way I can remember it all.If you have any questions about the management of trees or shrubs, you will likely find it in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Book
Harris wrote the first edition of this book when trees were "trimmed" by the same people who patched asphalt and repaired park benches. It was a breath of rationality in a field that relied mostlyon anecdotal information.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of creative ideas!!!
I love this book!! There are so many creative ideas to get kids involved in gardening!!! I can't wait to try them!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration Celebration!
As an elementary teacher and a future parent, I am absolutely in love with this book. Sharon Lovejoy's ideas have started my own mind to reel with possibilities and garden projects. Not only are her ideas clever and creative, but she clearly explains the entire process, from planning and preparing to ways to celebrate the harvest! Right off the bat, the book opens with "20 plants every child's garden must have". From vegetables to flowers, handmade dolls, homegrown houses for our feathered friends, mazes, and pizza gardens to sunflower houses, this book is such a gift to anyone who wishes to instill the "sense of wonder".

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary insights
This book is remarkable in at least three regards.First, it is so finely produced that we, as readers, can actually feel our way into the gardens it is showing us.Second, the principles of garden-making it offers us are profound, simple and flexible: we can see how the Mosko gardens emerge from them, and how our own might too.Third, and most unusual, it is deeply spiritual, coming from years of meditative practice in the Zen and Tibetan tradtions, as well as in unnamed native traditions of spirit. In the deepest sense this book is beauty as instruction.

4-0 out of 5 stars does a great job at covering the basics of turf management
This introductory-level book provides the beginner with the basics of turfgrass management.Scientific names are as up-to-date as possible for the turfgrasses as well as pests that invade them.Diagrams / photos ofgrasses and grass pests could be more extensive, but the cost of the bookwould likely escalate beyond the nominal price of this volume, which makesit attractive for use as a text in an entry-level turfgrass course. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Funny and Sad at the same time
It is a story as old as America itself. When we dream, we dream big. Big houses, big cars and, in the case of The $64 Tomato, big gardens. In this book, author William Alexander details his love/hate relationship with his garden. I knew I was going to love this book within the first chapter, when I found myself laughing out loud time and time again. Alexander perfectly captures the idealism and absurdity that usually accompany any home improvement project.
5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Will Grow On You!
What a riot, an absolute riot...and yet strangely quixotic as well! Here we enter the realm of one man's passion for gardening, which at times borders on obsession. The $64 Tomato is the tale of Alexander's journey from homeowner with a few tomatoes to homeowner with a huge garden and small orchard, a goal that was achieved through hard work, healthy dose of hilarity (rather at the author's expense), and a constant battle with nature and all the her many critters. This is not a how to book, it's not chock full of handy tips and hints on how to grow/build/create the perfect garden...this is more of a memoir...a record of his particular journey from the very start of his passion for this garden and all the many foibles it involves.
5-0 out of 5 stars Laugh, relate right through this really quick read.
How much does it cost per tomato from a vision of a garden to a garden?Add up the fertilizer, fencing, flaky landscaping contractors, hysterical accounts of the epic of his yard and the author estimates he spent $64 for each tomato he grew.

5-0 out of 5 stars Organic Architecture with Plants
Greenroof professionals and enthusiasts alike will be delighted with the easy reading and scope of content offered in "Planting Green Roofs and Living Walls" by Nigel Dunnett and Nol Kingsbury.Very well organized, the book's forte and major value is as an essential resource - especially in terms of plant description, characteristics and specification. It's also a great bargain in that the book is filled with color photos, drawings, charts and reference material. This indispensable hard cover reference guide contains a truly massive collection of appropriate plant information, and perhaps most importantly, extensive plant directories are provided for both greenroofs and faade greening.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Garden Resource
Going to the Garden Shop is an experience and if you are like me, want eveything in bloom at any given time. Perennial Combinations does a beautiful job combining color and bloom times so that you can easily plan your garden. There is sometime for every garden size, soil, and light exposue. Beside being practical the illustrations are breathtaking. I wish I had bought this book prior to planning my last garden!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for the beginner
I bought this book because this is the first time I've planted perennials and this book has a 5-star rating from the other readers. I have to say that as a beginner, I am completely stumped by the scientific names of the plants that are listed in this book. The photos are nice and the combinations are pretty, but trying to locate these plants at the local garden center - unfortunately employeed with teenagers who are not very familiar with horticulture - is the biggest challenge. At my local garden centers and nurserys it's difficult to locate these specific plants. Not only that, but there are such specific recommendations in the book that if one is not careful, it would be easy to purchase the wrong plant. For example: Phlox vs Early Phlox.
5-0 out of 5 stars Still a star
PERENNIAL COMBINATIONS by Colston Burrell is another practical and increasingly beautiful Rodale publication (remember those older Rodale volumes printed on coarse pulp paper?).Although this book was published several years ago, it is still a mega-star as far as I am concerned--printed on slick glossy paper and filled with beautiful and clear photographs. The combinations I used worked for me then and they work now in my more mature garden.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Step In the Right direction
I expected another great book about nature's ability to communicate with life forms in more ways than we expect.Instead I got MORE!Influencing each other in ways once couldn't imagine, this book builds past the works of even Michael Roads (author of great works like Journey Into Nature). It is almost too advanced for me just now, but a book I will definitely go back to again and again.
5-0 out of 5 stars When you're ready, it's a journey you cannot miss!
A down-to-earth and simplistic account of valuable insights shed on the relationship between humans and nature and how humans can interact with nature and/or the spiritual realms to bring about profound changes to the quality of human life. What a blessing life can be just so much easier if only we're willing to make it so!

1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing New Here
Lets face it......if you know anything at all about developing land, the absolute critical item is actually finding a piece of property that makes sense to wast time pursuing. I bought this book hoping to find some insight into ways of "finding" that elusive "good fit" property that maybe I have not thought of. Nothing new here, just some odball potential sources of finding property that just waste your time

2-0 out of 5 stars Intro to development that could be half as long

5-0 out of 5 stars Written By A Pro
This 178 page book is one of the best I have seen so far. It is published by a web based educational company that has a broad educational scope. It is slightly textbookish but not at all difficult for anyone who is serious about having more than a magazine article knowledge about pruning. Pruning is presented as a horticultural science not as someone's idea of what might be best. The book is well organized and about as comprehensive as a 178 page book could be.It is a serious little book. For example, on page 61 there are 24 tree drawings showing different limb configurations and the required pruning cuts to develop a dominant leader. You can learn a lot from that one page. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice
Although a little on the introductory side, I really enjoyed this book. I am a researcher in botany areas and I can say that the author does a great job at describing and aiding to identify and separate useful plants from obnoxious look-alikes. Somebody here suggested that the book could be organized in some hierarchical form. That is equivalent of a botanical taxonomy key. It would be great but there are keys for the purpose of organizing the info and helping to pick plants apart. I don't think it is essential here.

Editorial Review

Burpee has created a truly encyclopedic, but non-intimidating, guide to organic vegetable gardening that can be used and appreciated by anyone, whether or not they've ever stuck a seed in the ground. All the essential information is here--how to condition the soil, how and where to plant, sprouting schedules, what kind of yield to expect from each plant variety, and harvesting tips--in beautiful, bountiful, illustrated detail; the book's largest section, "Plant Portraits," contains explanations of the many cultivars of each vegetable and herb. If you're a novice vegetable gardener or new to organic gardening and can only afford one gardening guide, this may be your best value. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Organized, Comprehensive, Excellent Layout
Burpee's "The Complete Vegetable and Herb Gardener: A Guide to Growing Your Garden Organically" is fantastic. In addition to what Burpee lists on the back cover of what is inside the book, there are also many easy-reading tables that contain excellent information such as the vitamin(s) that each vegetable contains, different cultivars, plant PH needs, watering needs per week, crop yields, etc. Many interesting tidbits.5-0 out of 5 stars Vegatable Gardening Made Really Easy
Very similar in content and structure to Ortho's Complete Guide to Vegtables. The difference comes in the experience the writer has growing and maitaining the various plants.I find using both books gives different perspectives for growing and caretaking of plants but conatins the same basic information. For instance the Ortho book has better Garden Setup and maintenance data, and raw data on the various gardening aspects like fertilizer and pest eradiction. The Burpee book focuses on plant and cultivar details a little better. The book is filled with plenty high quality pictures of plants and their fruits using multiple pictures of various cultivars within plant families.5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely awesome
My daughter bought this for me on fathers day and it has helped me immensely. From the sections on soil testing and conditioning to the extensive vegetable articles, it has really helped make this year a total success.Read more
