5-0 out of 5 stars Where Physical Geography & Env. Planning share common ground
This may be one of the best introductions to environmental planning for geography students interested in the application of physical geographic techniques. When inquiring minds ask how a Geography major like myself ended up doing septic plan review as a county Environmental Health Specialist I simply point to Marsh's chapter on waste disposal and describe the necessary physical parameters familiar to physical geographers (soil types and percolation rates, groundwater levels, slopes and topography, surface water, geohazards, mapping, etc). There is something for everybody in this book and you don't have to be a geography major to benefit. A very practical text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Environmental Planning
I am a student in environmental planning and have found this book to be extremely useful. It address a variey of things such as watershed, storm discharge, streamflow, etc. It really gives the reader an idea of how to design with nature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book to understand the physiologhy of vegetables
This book is one of the best vegetable physiology books I have ever read. First couple of chapters provide you with complete understanding of basic vegetable physiology, where as later chapters deal with major vegetable crops individually. It is a very good and valuable source of informationfor students majoring in horticulture as well as researchers. As anhorticulturist, I am planning to use this book as a textbook for my"the principles of growing vegetables" course which I will beteaching soon. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Garden Color for Florida
It is very difficult to find a good reference gardening book for South Florida specially for the Miami area. This book along with her other book "Easy Gardens for South Florida" are a must for anyone trying to garden in South Florida. Great information on all the plants listed in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coloring a Florida garden.
This very splashy book with big type, excellent large color photos on big pages is a useful guide if you are looking to brighten up your Florida garden. Crawford provides more information about how to care for each plant than is available in most books. The format of two facing pages for each plant with the information arranged in a common format and organization makes it very easy to use.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I've lived in Florida for five years and always wanted a lot of color in my garden. Most of my efforts failed, except for annuals which I constantly have to replace. This book introduced me to a whole new group of easy perennials that bloom a lot and last for years! And each plant description has more care information than any other book I've ever seen! This book has changed my garden from drab to gorgeous! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous and Useful Book for us TEXANS
Really shows you which plants grow well in our region. Also gives nice ideas for plantings.

4-0 out of 5 stars Yes, but how do you. . .
If you need a book to give you an idea about a space and what to do with it, this is the book.Great photos and wonderful ideas.Unfortunately you will need additional reference material to get you from point A to point B (if you are a novice like me). This is a very good book to start with!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas, but should have expanded upon them.
This is a tale of two books. The first one explains landscaping principles to the not-so-artistically inclined, and makes landscaping attainable to us. It contains beautiful design examples that could even be copied and installed as is. You can learn how to make eye-catching corners in your yard, design and install a garden with a water element, merge your landscape into a woodland, make a shady hideaway, and much more. If you want a book that will get you over the creative hurdle, save yourself a bunch of money, and create a yard that is the talk of the town, this book is a must-have reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great How-to On Safely Composting Effluent Back To Food!
Human effluent has been the nemesis of most societies for centuries and despite all of our current technological prowess, we have yet to intelligently address one of the most basic biological functions of our existence. And our effluent is backing-up on us, big time.
3-0 out of 5 stars Don't think it's all going to be perfect though.
We were so inspired by this book we ripped out both our flush toliets. We started a large composting operation in our back yard. Now we have lots of mice and flies - yes we follow the directions to the letter. He states with proper covering, you won't get flies. Wrong. If you mix food with the foop no mice - wrong again! Mice and flies anyway - so you might want to start small first before you go sell your old porcelain potties. We feel slightly betrayed by this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Great Use for Poop
I was very excited when I discovered this book, as I had been saving my bowel products for about six months at the time with only a vague understanding that they might someday be put to better use.Unfortunately I live in a small condo, and I don't have a garden, much less a compost heap.So I guess I will have to donate my hard earned sludge to someone who can help it return to nature.I wonder if you ever grow a carrot that has a peanut stuck in it.Also, anyone know a good use for bottled yellow? ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Soon
Certainly one of the better books I have read on this subject.Very descriptive and scientific. One downfall to the book and to the whole idea of tissue culture is the massive costs of lab equipment and growing media.Very well written book though, and a good starter book.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's okay but fell short of my expectations
The book was okay but fell short of my expectations. The author attempted to proceed by taking the reader from no background on microbiology, botany, or tissue culture to explaining to what cloning is all about. It fell short in several areas. The author needed to expand the discussion on plant hormones and the issue of thermal stability during sterilization procedures. The author didn't discuss at all modern methods of cold-filter sterilization methods. The author discusses the topic about making stock solutions but didn't discuss issues of shelf life of hydrated hormones.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Best curently available
This book contains everything that you need to know to start cloneing plants. Some of the material is geared more towards comericial operations but there is a lot for the hobbiest too.I thought that it could have beenorganized a little better. The authors talk about equipment and mediabefore they go through the cloning process.Parts of it will be boringunless you are planing to actually culture plants. For example there areseveral step by step lists on how to preform transfers etc. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference book for the aspiring gardener.
I am sometimes asked which gardening books I would recommend.I would have to say one of the top books in my arsenal is "Gardening for Dummies".
5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Helped Turn My Black Thumb Green
Let's say for a second that you DON'T live in one of those regions where most everything grows with little effort. If that's the case, and you'd really LIKE to have a great garden or flower bed, I highly recommend this book.I used to have the black thumb of death when it came to plants and flowers, but that has turned quite green since buying MacCaskey's book.So WHY does it help?
5-0 out of 5 stars Just right...
I am a novice gardener who is trying to figure out how to maintain a well-landscaped property that I inherited. After the first couple of years of letting the place "rest on its laurels" (i.e., get by on its past grandeur and do nothing to maintain it except to water it every now and then, but otherwise neglecting it and letting it get weedy and rangy), I have finally tackled the project of educating myself about gardening and trying to restore some freshness and style to my garden. This book offers a very skillful overview of everything I need to know in order to take on this project. It gives an overview of pretty much every fundamental of gardening, giving enough explanation to help you understand the logic behind the "rules" of garden creation and maintenance, but without the kind of technical detail that would make it tedious or would glaze the eye of the beginner. I have found this an excellent "starter" book--gives the lay of the land, as it were, so that you can establish basic competence and understanding before you go onto more specialized knowledge. THANKS! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for business, more than I needed
This is an excellent book. I just recently started raising chickens and was disappointed at the information available at the local library. I purchased Chickens In Your Backyard: A Beginner's Guide , Day Range Poultry: Every Chicken Owner's Guide to Grazing Gardens and Improving Pastures , and Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens: Care / Feeding / Facilities . Recent reading at the library about pasture raising livestock got me interested in this title. The volume they discuss is a little more than I was interested in, but that is not the fault of the book. It is well written, an easy read, and comprehensive in the amount of information it contains. The only thing I could add to Claudia Campbell's comments is that information is also included in business organization, strategies and marketing. If you go into poultry on this scale, it has to make a profit to be sustainable. I agree this book is a complete resource.
5-0 out of 5 stars This fowl book hits a home run!
I just finished Day Range Poultry and am thoroughly impressed. They not only tell you what Day Range is, but compare it to other methods of raising birds listing the pros and cons of each.If you want to start raising birds, especially large numbers of birds, everything is here, in detail. How to set up a Day Range system for broilers, layers, and turkeys, including shelters, what worked and what didn't for them, feeds and feeding, protection from predators fencing and moving about the pasture for optimum manure spreading.

Perhaps this book would be best utilized by a geologist interested in learning how soils effect vines/plants. Professor White introduces the book by stating the common notions of "terroir" but concludes irregardless of the term, "the soil cannot be ignored as an integral component of wine [grape] growing." This is indeed the premise behind this study.
4-0 out of 5 stars Soils For Fine Wines
A great book on beginning growing. To get the full understanding about what Mr white is talking about the book Science in Agriculture I feel, should be read first. Great section, along with the pros and cons, of different types of irrigation. Seems to lean a little heavy on the soils of California. For the person not growing grapes but enjoys good wine it is an excellant sorce of how the wine gets its flavor. The principles presented will aid anyone growing almost anything.

5-0 out of 5 stars A long-needed book
In "Soils for Fine Wines" Robert White sets to provide information needed for better understanding of how soils and their properties relate to management and wine-grape production. This book is a long-needed one indeed; most other viticultural books are discussing soil as an environmental factor only in passing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful reference
The photographic plates are indeed very beautiful but having the descriptions in another section of the book does make for an inconvenient flipping from the front of the book that has the photographs to the back of the book with the textual information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not your average gardening book
This is not another book of pretty pictures of flowers. The book takes you from start (preparing the soil), to caring for your plants (pruning tips), to finish (dividing mature plants).

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, practical advice for novices and more
I've been gardening for 4 years and I learned a few really useful things from Tracy's book; enough to keep it on my list of "most wanted" gardening books. There is a great deal of information on preparing beds, soil amendment, planting and some creative pruning ideas.I think of this book the same way I think of Jaques Pepin's "La Technique" when it comes to cooking. It's a basic, a classic, and it should be on your shelf, or better yet in front of you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the non-professional
This is a book that I give to all my new perennial clients. It is well written and easy to understand.Tracy cuts my extra
