Slightly antiquated Bonsai book
While the trees themselves have not changes, books have.This book is good, but there are better Bonsai books out there that are available for the beginner.Check out "The Complete Book of Bonsai" by Harry Tomlinson instead

Miniature bonsai from garden stock
Perhaps the above would be a better title. This is not a book about the heights to which miniature bonsai can soar...This is simply a book about how you, or I, or anyone else can make passable minature (mame) bonsai in an hour or so, by pruning and wiring common garden material. Excellent Book
If you are into Bonsai as much as I am, you'll love this book.This book covers the rare subject of"mame" Bonsai, or "in hand". We're talking about Bonsai who's pots are smaller than an open hand( in the book, there is a photo of a bonsai who's pot is no larger than half a walnut!). Great Chart!
One of the things that I really like about this book is the chart.There is a list of different plants and for each there a recommended pruning style, repotting time and more.Plus there is a lot of good informationabout how the care for minature bonsai is different from the regular sizedbonsai. ... A book that opens up ones own personal creativity in Saikei
This is a must book for people interested in creating a personalised landscape on a pot. Never have i come across a book that allowed me to lookat rocks in a different manner and arranging them so that there is balanceand harmony. The author has managed to explain in simple terms and clearinstructions on how to see a rock and arrange it in such a way that itbecomes alive. There is more to it than just rocks...plants, pebbles, mossare all use to make scenaries that you wish you could be inside it. Theauthor also shares his imagination with each of his creation. He shows usas well in step wise manner how he builds his creation. Best of all thehobby is not expansive and can be appreciated by all people.

Great how-to
I am a veteran bonsai enthusiast and have been using this book for many years.It is also a good beginner's guide with clear instructions as well as color and black and white illustrations.

Aerial roots on fig trees.
This is a general book on bonsai, covering both temperate and tropical species. It is the only published book I know of that gives detailed instructions on how to grow aerial roots on tropical fig trees kept as bonsai. Found it to be one of the best for beginners!
Being brand new to the art, I wanted a working background guide to quickly provide a foundational knowledge from which to build.This book goes well beyond!Well illustrated with pruning, training, propagating techniques,and traditional styles, it provided a superb basis for getting started. The only thing I wish it would have included was a section on "beforeand after" (to guide one on where to start in the initial pruningprocess, or "how to select a plant and how to indetify the style thatmight best fit a particular shaped plant".If your just beginning,this would be a great first step! ... Great Author, execellent information, Poorly Edited
Having read over 20 Bonsai books, I love the layout and the flow of information in this book. Specially the case studies, very useful and informative. I would recommend this for Beginner to Intermediate Bonsai enthusiast. The author is very knowledgeable and the pictures are beautiful. I would have given this book 4.5 stars, instead of 2 stars if not for the poorly editing/publishing job. There were some unacceptable editing and printing errors. For example, page 94 and 95Read more

Beautiful, awe inspiring photos...
Being an avid bonsai lover, I bought this books a few years ago to get an overview of the art of Bonsai.Now, a few years later and a few trees dead, I've found this book to be an inspiring pictorial of some of theBrooklyn Botanical Garden's most beautiful specimens, but lacking indetail.While I'm not an expert in Bonsai, and I'm a bit more learned now,I find that the author either skipped some basic preliminary steps, orwrote in vague non-descript terms that left me, the reader, looking formore (ie: moss and ground cover... need more details).But, just for thepictures alone, this book deserves 4 stars because it has started my ownimagination going and given me some guidance and ideas on designs andstyles I'd like to use on my Bonsais.Read more

Bonsai Landscapes
Peter Adams has achieved international stature as one of the finest bonsai practitioners alive. Classically trained as a studio artist at the Royal Academy of Arts, Mr. Adams essentially pioneered the art of bonsai in the UK in the 1950s. What distinguishes him both as a bonsai artist and author is his vast knowledge of horticulture combined with his grasp of bonsai aesthetics as expressed through Western art doctrines. His ability to communicate those two integral disciplines clearly and powerfully in his writing and drawing contributes to the value of his work.
One of the top two!
Having been involved in bonsai for about 20 yrs and especially like forests & groves, I feeel that Peter's book is one of the two best on the topic. It is imformative, the photographs are excellent, and he gives you step-by-step details for serveral different projects as shown in the book. This, as well as any other of Peter's books, is a must for a bonsai library.
