Excellant book for the serious bonsaist.
This is an excellant book for people familiar with the basics andwishing to move beyond "a shrub in a pot."Adams is a world class teacher of the art and science of bonsai, but his books are hard to get. They are worth the effort.

Great for beginners
I read this entire book at one sitting. Once you get past the initialhistory it is a great all around summary of bonsai. I thought there wasalot of good information for beginners. Excelent book for beginner and intermediate

Interesting
This is indeed a nicely presented book with an interesting concept in which various bonsai experts offer their opinions and creative ideas behind this amazing artform. I have to pick up on the history section though, in which it is explained that the term bonsai means bon=tree and sai=tray. This is in fact NOT the case. The word bon (this particular kanji) actually refers to a Buddhist tray, one on which various ritual implements where placed. The actual kanji on its own is not used much anymore and is only usually encountered today in the word bonsai. The kanji sai actually means "a planting," not a tree, or a plant, but "a planting." So the Japanese term BONSAI means "a planting on a (Buddhist) tray." It can be seen from early 7th century paintings that bonsai in Japan were connected with (Mikkyo) Buddhist contemplation/meditation, and that they were indeed grown on a tray without a "pot" as such. Excellent pictures. Very good text. Helpfull tips.
Very good book with excellent photographs. Good advices for those who want to buy, create or simply take good care of bonsai trees. The author explains very well how to do almost everything with these wonderful trees. If you're intention is to buy only one book of bonsai you should buy this one. It's my favourite!

an excellent beginner's book with beautiful illustrations
This is a very visually-appealing book with creative photography and excellent color pictures on almost every page.It is targeted to the beginner, and (though a beginner myself) I think it is quite informativeand gets one off to a good start.It has an index of many common treesused for bonsai and rates them according to difficulty, hardiness andsun/shade preference.It's weakness is an abundance of technical printingerrors (goofed up captions, mostly), but in spite of this I heartilyrecommend it to the beginner for use as "A [Basic] Care Manual"and say it's well worth its price.
