5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource For Cold Climates!
I have had this book for a few years now and used it extensively.I am in north central Iowa, zone 4, and this book has helped me to choose shrubs and small trees that can withstand my extremely bitter cold winters. What I love about this book is there are many photos, many nursery resources listed, and it is full of very valuable information.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and superbly illustrated
How wonderful to have a book that provides the level of detail made available here for those of us who shiver through our winters and worry about whether the new additions to the garden are as hardy as the garden center promised.5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful and helpful information
This book has been more helpful to us in many different areas. It explains everything from how and when to prune to how and when to fertilize. It shows both common name and scientific name in the table of contents to quickly find what you're looking for. If you are looking for a book that explains how to take care of everything available in the cold northeast, this is the book for you. Gardeners can't go wrong with this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Healthy eating, yes, if you want a total lifestyle overhaul...
I guess I'm not the typical reviewer here - I am interested in healthy eating, but without the context of a major life change for myself and my family of five... I'd like to find new ways to eat well, without undermining our entire familiar (mostly vegetarian, mostly well-balanced) diet.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful All-Purpose Book.
"Sproutman's Kitchen Garden Cookbook" is a great all-purpose book for anyone new to sprouts and sprouting and for the sprout vetran who is looking for more recipes and ideas. The tone is chatty and humourous. The book is a great read cover to cover, but it can also be read a section at a time, in any order. 5-0 out of 5 stars the best recipe book for health and taste
I'm into raw foodism and have found various recipe books for a raw foodist. This book is the best recipe book I know. It's very detailed, practical, and rich in contents.I also like the philosophy of the author: While it is good to increase the intake of raw foods, it's not necessary that every mouthful of food contains enzyme.Sometimes it's necessary to cook the food at a relatively low temperature.I've learned to make sprouted wheat bread from this book. It's very easy and the bread is wonderfully nutritious and delicious.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful reading andgobs of information.
A passionately written book. The information is detailed yet to the point and not boring or too scientific. A great book for the cold climate novice gardener or a reference for the master.5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for perennials in the Midwest
I've bought and borrowed numerous books regarding perennials.None has been so complete and well illustrated. Each plant species has varieties listed as well as planting, mulching, pruning, dividing techniques and advice. As an avid perennial gardener, I can't recommend this book highly enough.Kudos to the authors!

5-0 out of 5 stars Gardening in areas that reach 20 degrees below 0
This book lets you know which perennials you can buy and grow in cold climates. It is a must for anyone in the Northern Areas of 20 degree's below 0 even in Canada. It shows the pictures of the flowers and where they will grow best for cold weather. It also shows you the best variety to buy and where you can order them, plant them and how to do it. It is a must for cold weather climates. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars When is part two of hot plants for cool climates comming out?
This bood is exactly what I was looking for. What plant to use to create the tropical look for cold country as far as Qubec.Great tips, even for a long time gardener as I am, I have fund lots of plants that I did'nt know we could over wintered in cold storage. I really hope that they would be a part II of the same book, which will illustrated some nordic landscaping with a exotic look, using the plant showing in this book.Thank's again
5-0 out of 5 stars Do You Crave a Lush Landscape?
I've always admired the gorgeous plants and lush landscaping that one could do in the tropics. This book tells you how to do that without moving to Florida. The authors have good credentials for a book of this type.
4-0 out of 5 stars pretty hot
The back of the book is helpful, the pictures throught the book are good, but not really inspiring. I'd recommend this book for beginners getting into tropicals. but if your looking for more this wouldn't be the best book for you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful rose reference for northern gardeners
Not only is this book the best reference, but the only one that gives novices as well as the advanced growers the information on growing healthy roses in the colder zones. It classifies the different types of roses that can be grown well, how to plant them, prune them, maintain them, select them and where to buy them. If non-hardy hybrid teas are your choice, it has excellent pictures giving the step-by-step method of tipping roses for winter protection.Roses hardy for the north are all listed - the old garden roses up to the newly hybridized Canadian hardy roses. Anyone wanting to grow roses in the north needs this excellent reference!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you live in the north you have to have this book!
The most valuable part of this book is the section that rates each rose.It gives a 1-5 star rating and a detailed description of the characteristics of that plant. It tells you why it deserved 5 stars orwhat is wrong with the rose so it didn't earn 5 stars! The other part ofthis book gives detailed and easy to understand tips on how to plant, feed, and protect your roses. The pictures are excellent and this is a hard bookto put down. The author is obviously a lover of roses and not just ahorticulturist! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic resource
This book is an essential resource for gardeners who dream of feeding themselves off their own land in the frozen North. The book is organized into 3 sections and an appendix.Section one describes the challenges of cold climate gardening in general, and provides some very useful suggestions about how to get the most out of the garden, including dealing with microclimates, building soils, and starting seeds indoors. It closes with a chapter on ideas for lengthening the growing season, which is of vital concern when you only have 70-80 days of frost-free weather.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect instructional reference for the novice gardener in a colder climate
In this newly revised and expanded edition of Organic Gardening In Cold Climates, gardening expert Sandra Perrin draws upon her more than thirty years of experience gardening year-round in Montana to teach aspiring gardeners in the upper states of the U.S. and the provinces of Canada how to adapt to cold weather and early frosts when raising their garden vegetables. There are special sections devoted to "companion planting", season extenders, composting, natural pest and disease control, and "French Intensive Gardening". Every aspect of gardening in a northern climate is clearly addressed from planning the garden, to preparing the soil, to planting, to tending what has been planted, and harvesting. Enhanced with chapters devoted to fruit and vegetable seeds, growing herbs in a garden setting,, gardening and therapy, a listing of seed companies, and a bibliography of useful literature, Organic Gardening In Cold Climates is the perfect instructional reference for the novice gardener in a colder climate.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good book and quick to get through
I'm 20 and in college and have a small (8' by 12') vegetable garden in Vermont and this book is perfect for anyone interested in doing the same sort of thing. It introduced me into many concepts I had never heard of including how to make a compost pile, companion planting, and season extenders such as hotbeds. One thing I liked was that it gave a number of ways to do each thing...it didn't demand that there was one best way to do things...it lets you choose what's best for you.The second half of the book lists a number of different varieties of each vege/herb and when/where you should plant them and how they should be cared for. ...
