5-0 out of 5 stars Organic Architecture with Plants
Greenroof professionals and enthusiasts alike will be delighted with the easy reading and scope of content offered in "Planting Green Roofs and Living Walls" by Nigel Dunnett and Nol Kingsbury.Very well organized, the book's forte and major value is as an essential resource - especially in terms of plant description, characteristics and specification. It's also a great bargain in that the book is filled with color photos, drawings, charts and reference material. This indispensable hard cover reference guide contains a truly massive collection of appropriate plant information, and perhaps most importantly, extensive plant directories are provided for both greenroofs and faade greening.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Guide to Lovely Planters
I wanted ideas for good-looking container gardens for my screened lanai. This books really delivers what I needed:
5-0 out of 5 stars New Flowers for a New Home
Although I've read a number of gardening books, I seem to have been having terrible luck with one container garden. Finally, I tossed all the soil and read this book. After realizing the draining system was not in place, not to mention I was using the wrong soil and the root system was in a tangle, I finally was able to create a fushia and violet themed flower garden complete with Daddy Blue Petunias, Easter Bonnet Violet Alyssum and pink Bearded tongue. The Columbine flowers are mixed in someplace and I think I have to rescue them from the petunias that are now taking over the planter. 5-0 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air
Container Gardening is a breath of fresh air. Paul Williams enthusiastic and energetic writing style, when combined with such fantastic photographs is truly inspiring. Having read all of his books, you understand Paul Williams is a man who really loves plants and understands how to make a garden work. He has an amazing ability to pass on his knowledge in an informative and motivating style. As a young gardener, Container Gardening is one of the best purchases i have ever made and is a cracking book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Container Gardening for Dummies
As someone with a "black thumb" (I can generally kill a plant within 24 hours!) I found this book to be very helpful. Even though there are huge amounts ofreal and applicable information here, the author manages to keep it fun and very readable. The best part is that since reading this book and putting it to use I haven't lost one plant! In fact, they seem to be thriving.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Basic Starter Book
I found lots of very useful information from pot sizes and soil (and soil-less) mixes as well as useful info on lots of plants, needs, watering etc. As container gardening is quite different than planting in the ground, I found this book VERY useful and different from all the other normal gardening books. I am a beginner, but love to research stuff to death and I find this book does give you a very good foundation to get started and do well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative

3-0 out of 5 stars Split Decision
The front section of the book, with its glossy format, is a visual treat. The latter portion, with its faded photographs and mossy contrasts in typeset and paper color made me wonder if I had received a misprinted copy of the book. Not only will the planted containers need good light, I'll need it to read about how to put them together!

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice book for a beginner....
What's not to like about P.Allen Smith's approach to gardening?A favorite of Public Television fans, and the fellow who pops up on the Weather channel, Smith is a font of information for the new home gardener. In his nifty new book CONTAINER GARDENS he shows once again that he has many answers to questions the novice might have about a particular topic. Smith follows the seasons of the year discussing what you might display when spring arrives (bulbs and other spring flowers), summer heat bakes everything (some plants like it hot), fall colors the garden, and winter deposits snow and icicles.I must confess, I generally empty most of my pots when late fall arrives as few are frost proof, but I have purchased some containers in recent years that can weather the coldest temperatures and their contents survive freezing. Smith discusses the pots and pot materials you can use to defy temperature extremes be they hot or cold.

1-0 out of 5 stars worst gardening book I ever read
There is nothing new in this 'method'. If you have read Square Foot Gardening you have read everything worth reading in this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Choice
A excellent choice. Cubed foot gardening takes Square foot to an other level. An excellant companion book.

5-0 out of 5 stars More new ideas in Raised Intensive Bed Gardening
As someone who cut my gardening "teeth" with Mel Bartholomew's "Square Foot Gardening", I was interested in what differing suggestions Chris Bird's Cubed Foot Gardening would impart. What was he talking about? Cubed foot? 3' by 3'? NOT. 1' x 1' x 1' deep. I was using raised beds, even with the square foot method...but now I learn that my 2 x 8 boxes aren't nearly tall enough for plants with deep root systems. Next year, I'll add another level of depth to the boxes to at least 2 x 12, if not 2 x 16. I've grown the verticle pumpkins and cantilope. It DOES work. I found Mr. Bird's spacing suggestions a bit more realistic, and he's included several hilarious comments.A great supplement to "Square Foot Gardening". ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Too focused on plants instead of troughs
I was disappointed in this book for many reasons.I was looking for a resource on how to create different shapes, depths and sizes of hypertufa troughs. This book focused on fairly shallow, square troughs.Because most of the trough photographs were in black and white, it was difficult for a beginner to visualize how a finished product should look.Too much of the book was focused on the type of plants you can grow in troughs. I feel a trough is just a container with unique characteristics and was hoping for information on the kinds of problems trough gardners face and how to deal with those problems.I gave the book a 3 rating because chapter 2 - 'Constructing A Hypertufa Trough' was well done. Even with the lack of color photographs in this chapter, you will know how to create a small, square trough. If you are looking for creative trough ideas this is not the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for this niche gardening style
Stone agricultural troughs, either as a theme or an accent, can add a special look to a garden.Of course you don't have to use a real stone these days as cement can be used to create the troughs. But, whether stone or cement it still ends up extremely heavy. One way to get around this is to mix peat moss with the cement. This produces a much lighter weight, porous trough that looks like stone. That is the focus of this particular gardening book - how to make these "hypertufa" troughs, what plants do well in them, and some basic plan layouts for using them in a garden design.Pictures of the troughs created by these techniques show troughs and stones that appear very old with lichens and mosses growing on the sides. They remind me very much of pictures of ancient Mayan or Indonesian stone ruins. For anyone who wants to add this type of accent or wants to create a garden that has the appearance of ancient stone structures this is a book you will want to have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical workbook....
CREATING AND PLANTING GARDEN TROUGHS by Joyce Fingerut and Rex Murfitt is a pragmatic and down-to-earth (or hypertufa) work book with 164 jam-packed detailed pages printed on non-glossheavy paper. The book contains about 10 pages of color photos, so if you're looking for a "look-book" as opposed to a "work-book" don't stop here. TROUGHS won an American Horticultural Society Book Award, and like AHS publications and U.S.D.A. government publications this publication is filled with good, solid information. (Reminds me of the Girl Scout Handbook.)Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as Vegetable Gardener's Bible or Bountiful Container
I learned a great deal from Edward Smith's other book, The Vegetable Gardener's Bible, and I use it as a reference on germination and growing soil temperatures. So I did not hesitate to order his Incredible Vegetables from Self-Watering Containers when I decided to buy some books on container gardening.I ordered this book and McGee and Stuckey's Bountiful Container. Bountiful Container is comprehensive, thoughtful and very helpful. However, this book reads like an ad for self-watering containers, which were apparently provided free to the author with the hope that he might endorse them.Unlike the author's first book, this lavishly illustrated book is short on information, more suitable for a coffee table than a container gardener. If there were a money-back guarantee, I would request it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Suburban and utterly frustrating
If you have a lot of extra money to spend on plastic, pre-made, self-watering containers, then this is definately the book for you!
5-0 out of 5 stars At Last!
It's about time someone wrote a guide to the self watering planters! I have been a true believer in these planters for many years. I recently tried to talk my nephew into getting some, but it took this book to really open his eyes. It was also a big help to me, a veteran! I like how the author was honest to identify certain plants that wouldn't do well in a s/w planter because they like things dryer. This is a wonderful reference books, logically laid out and very clearly written. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Expensive But Worth It
Pamela Crawford's books are expensive by my standards.Nearly $40 since Amazon sells them at the full list price. For that price I would typically expect a gorgeous coffee table style book. This is not the case.Instead one gets a "homemade" looking book, by which I mean a multitude of font styles and sizes and colors on varying background colors. Some beautiful photographs as well as some fuzzy ones.
4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful gardening book to keep
This is another terrific Pamela Crawford book especially for those who live in South Florida. The techniques shown for maintaining container plants are detailed and easy to follow. She shows how to create container arrangements that are both simple and as beautiful as you'd see at a florist.
5-0 out of 5 stars All You Need To Know
I have found this book - like all of Pam Crawford's other titles - to be an invaluable resource. She is so thorough about each step, from the suitability of different pot materials to the choice of plants, that this book tells you literally all you need to know to grow successful container gardens.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Starter Book
This was a very good introductory book for a beginner like myself to basic principles of garden designing for small spaces.Brookes has separated the major concepts into six easy to read chapters: linking living/outdoor space, style, case studies, design (planning), structure (ground pattern, paving, fencing, furnishings) and planting. Each well-written chapter is accompanied by beautiful pictures to illustrate his point. I've tabbed more ideas from this book, than from any of my other books on garden design. If you are a beginner and have a small or tiny back-yard or no back-yard (roof top, apartment terrace), really consider getting this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but it lacked care help
This book gave me all the descriptive information I could want. There was not enough information regarding the care of Brugmansia's, like soil type preferred, feeding results, placement in garden.I can only grow one or two types due to my location and zone, so I would be more interested in how to care for the plants than in the different kinds. The book has beautiful pictures and I really enjoyed reading about all the different hybrids.I was hoping for more care and growing tips.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Guide for Growers of Angel Trumpets and Thorn Apples
I have liked Datura ever since I was a child and found a spectacular plant of Datura wrightii (sometimes synonymized with D. inoxia) growing in a pecan grove. The rolled up flower buds open in a fascinating way, in a spiral. In addition the white flowers open as evening comes on and produce an unbelievably strong fragrance. They are the epitome of a tropical flower.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is an excellent guide for anyone growing brugmansia (angel's trumpets) or datura (thorn apples) either in containers or in the ground. The history and folklore of the plants are discussed with particular attention to their hallucinogenic and medicinal qualities (both plants are poisonous). Classification of the plants are illustrated in detailed charts that show flower shapes, fruits, measurements of flowers, and basically everything (and more) than you would ever need to know. Other chapters cover cultivation, propagation, building a collection, natural changes (in brugmansia) and diseases and pests. The accompanying color photographs are excellent with amble close-ups and many full plant shots. Highly recommended for anyone interested in these outstanding and exotic plants. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tempting Tropicals: 175 Irresistible Indoor Plants
Tempting Tropicals by HortResources member Ellen Zachos is clear and concise, easy to read and understand even by those who do not have a degree in horticulture. It is a great reference for 175 tropical plants that are not grown as often as they should be. Each plant profile contains light, temperature, fertilization, and propagation information. There is also a section on winning attributes alongside each plant profile that will make it easier to decide if that is a plant you wish to grow. Ellen Zachos has taken all her own photographs unless otherwise stated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book...
BULBS IN CONTAINERS by Rod Leeds, is a wonderful little book filled with all sorts of ideas for containing your bulb collection, and the most entrancing work on bulbs since Elizabeth Lawrence wrote her book 'The Little Bulbs'. Filled with illustrations showing a variety of containers holding relatively uncommon bulbs such as various South African Hypoxis plants, this book provided me with many ideas. Bulbs aside, the second most intriguing aspect of Leeds' bulb arrangements are the containers themselves. He includes the ubiquitous clay pot in many interesting displays, along with unique pots such as a `shallow hypertufa sink'.Leeds suggests using various pots for free-standing specimens placed on tables, rocks or in the garden, or in displays with other pots, or in larger pots as a contrasting highlight with a shrub backdrop.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great beginner's book
As a very novice gardener, I needed a book that covered the basic of houseplant care. Well, this is it. I especially like the fact that it is full of color photos.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great overview book!
As a novice gardener I've perused a lot of books and usually they're either really wordy, use terms that a college professor might, or just don't quite have what I need. This book is a really nice overview of everything related to indoor gardening, with lots of photos to explain what they're talking about or doing.I especially love a photographic section on plant problems, diseases and bugs - a lot of the books out there 'explain' what to look for while this one actually shows an afflicted plant.I recommend this book for anyone who's looking to get further into the indoor plants (without actually looking for a degree...). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars ...
This book has received a lot of mixed reviews, so I just wanted to say: I liked it.4-0 out of 5 stars The book I've been searching for . . .
Finally, a gardening book that doesn't assume you have acres of land and a barn full of expensive equipment--or that you have the money to go out and buy them. 2-0 out of 5 stars vague and climate-specific
Allow me to be blunt.I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.Read more
