4-0 out of 5 stars An introduction to tomatoes
Those first-time gardeners interested in growing tomatoes will find Tantalizing Tomatoes to be an excellent introduction to North America's most beloved fruit/vegetable.The book covers everything that one needs to know from the history of the tomato through propigation, pest control and, finally, popular tomato recipes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Beginner Book
This was a good beginner book on growing tomatoes. It included some history, how-to, deciphering seed packet, and information on different varieties of tomatoes. If you are passed the beginner/novice stage, I recommend some thing a little more informative. It was an easy read and it gave me some ideas to try on my suffering tomatoe plants.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good beginner book
This book is a very good beginner book on growing tomatoes. It gives some history, how to, explains the seed packs, and gave me an idea on different varieties to try. If you already are pretty proficient in these things, I suggest you find something a little more informative. It did leave me with a few questions, but a lot of new ideas to try. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money!
When it comes to the specifics of growing plants this book is pretty skimpy. If you are an absolute beginner to gardening this is not the book for you.The book expects you to already know a pretty good amountabout gardening because the instructions are vague and you need to fill inthe blanks yourself. He seems to spend more time talking aboutbuilding trellises, planting boxes and cabinets than he does plant growing. The book also seems targeted more toward people who have a large deckor some other area larger than the average apartment building balcony orfire escape. So apartment dwellers may not benefit as much. Also thisbook seems more oriented to people who want to grow vegetables forornamental purposes instead of grocery bill savings. He spends a lot oftime describing how to build an acrylic window greenhouse into the wall ofa house and a glass door cabinet designed for growing plants indoors.I'm weary about that because vegetable plants need a lot of sunshine toproduce well. I had to move some of mine from an outdoor patio to an evensunnier location in the yard, so I can't imagine them doing well indoors. At the back of the book he offers some recepies and quickly discusseswhat he calls "Mexican Vegetables" like; Cactus, Chayote andJicama. There is also a list of 13 seed suppliers and a few beneficialinsect suppliers. You might pickup a few good ideas from this book butoverall I don't think it is very good. The only part I liked was thesection on growing your own sprouts, like bean sprouts, alfalfa sproutsetc. (By the way "mung bean" sprouts are the ones used in Chinesefoods like fried rice.)For that section only I give the book onestar. Actually I'd give it 1 1/2 if that were possible. A MUCH BETTER bookis MOVABLE HARVESTS The Simplicity and Bounty of Container Gardens By Chuckand Barbera Crandall. ISBN 1-881527-70-0. ... Read more
