5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference, but printed upside-down???
My copy arrived with the text bound upside-down in relation to the cover. However, this is by far the best study on viticulture around.Dated but still the best.

4-0 out of 5 stars A standard reference but. . .
I have no regrets buying General Viticulture. It is, after all, a standard reference. But in many ways it is now a lttle outdated and modern experience and advice is lacking. It should therefore be considered aimportant part, but only a part, of the basic library of anyone doing orcontemplating viticulture.4-0 out of 5 stars An indepth approach to Viticulture, but getting outdated.
I got the book "General Viticulture" originally back in 1977.I've looked at it recently at some better book stores. It is a powerhouse of information, there is no doubt, but unfortunately, it has not beenupdated in some time.Another drawback to the book is it's lack of grapeculture outside the "California" scene. There are some newstrides in viticulture going on in the midwest, and north east that are noteven remotely covererd. The training systems and specifics of the NEWERAmerican hybrids, with works from Elmer Swenson, David MacGregor, Dr. TonyBell, Dr. Peter Hemstad of the University of Minnesota, to name a few isnot even mentioned.I rated it 4 stars for it's excellent overview of justabout every Vinifera, it's characteristic and management, especiallyrelated to California and similar climates around the world. It is still agreat refernece book, just needs to be revised sometime. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures, but could have been better
The book is attractive and does contain a lot of information about different citrus varieties. My main criticism is that the Planting and Care section could have been much more substantial.Specifically, since the descriptions of various citrus ailments (poor nutrition, inappropriate watering, infection with pests) are not accompanied by photos of the symptoms, it makes it harder for the reader to figure out what these problems might actually look like. The black-and-white pen-and-ink drawings of pests are somewhat informative, but they're very limited compared to what might be conveyed by a photo.5-0 out of 5 stars subtropical fruit for third world country's information
This book has informatiom for the professional as well as the village farmer in Africa , its teachings are simple and clear for all those interested in the subject to follow , the illustrations and instructions are simple even for those with a basic knowledge of subtropical fruit growing. Africa is not covered in the distribution map never the less the fruits are for example the mango tree is synonymous with Africa , it gives food, and shelter from the elements and fuel what more can you want from a tree. Every African school would benefit from a book like this , and i know one that will.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great citrus guide with wonderful pix/info
I have read several other books on citrus cultivation, but this book is by far the best i've run across. It has excellent photographs of the hundreds of citrus fruits, both on the tree and of the inside of the fruit itself. It has some great citrus recipes, but it mainly focuses on the cultivation and care of each variety. This book tells the grower what he/she can exactly expect to see, and how to best care for your tree.If there is ANYTHING this book lacks, it is more info on out-of-zone citrus gardening. For example, i live in NC and i have phenomenal success with all my trees in containers (i winter them in a "cheap" plastic greenhouse). That is my only criticism of this book---otherwise, all cultivar info is detailed and well illustrated!!!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Keen by Name, Keen by Nature
This is a splendid book and the enthusiasm of the author shines through. No book on cacti can give all the answers, the subject is too vast. The author of this book takes the sensible approach and ensures that the content is well written and informative. The photographs in the book are excellent and show some species that are not normally seen in this type of book, particulary the Asclepiadaceae family. The feeling that the author would like you the reader to know exactly what he knows comes through strongly. There are articles on pests and diseases, grafting, watering and soil mixtures and even some tips on showing your plants. For those people who have a small collection of plants and want to keep them healthy and flowering, without going into too many technicalities, this is the book for you, and excellent value too. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Lacking lots of fruit tree information
There is a fair amount of information if you mostly want to grow certain nut trees (pecan, walnuts, hazelnuts) and citrus.I would have liked to see a lot more information on less common nut varieties (e.g., chestnuts, pine nuts, etc.)And there was little to no information on apple, pear, plum, etc. There are better books that cover fruit in general, and there are citrus specialty books if that's your main interest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative!
This is a great read for a novice tree grower!

Too bad this lovely book is out of print. It is a month-by-month gardening companion that is filled with Victorian advertisements and postcards on every page.Every page has so many beautiful scenes..You could spend all day flipping through the pages. But the real idea behind this gorgeous book is the old-time Victorian gardening advice that's also on every page.Such wonderful advice never goes out of style. It's particularly valuable for the organic gardener, who wants to enjoy her or his garden in the most natural way possible.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good overview
This book provides a very helpful overview of subtropical fruits. I was interested in finding good fruits to plant that are hard to obtain in stores and do well in my climate.By perusing this book multiple times over the course of several months, I was able to begin to get a feel for what would be good candidates.I have since planted several of them, am enjoying good fruit, and still like glancing through this book in a free moment...

1-0 out of 5 stars Way too vague
If you want to know how to take care of your tropical fruit you won't learn it here! If you want to see pictures of citrus fruit, that you will see. I have pineapple plants along with banana, mango, orange, key lime, tangerine, and papaya trees. This book was worthless to me. I already know what they look like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Straightforward
I bought this book when I was in middle school and memorized it :-p. Now I am a college junior and I'm working towards interning at a tropical fruit grove later on. I won't say this book started me on that journey, but it's a pretty good guide for learning ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Really expanded my ideas of what to plant
I read about another book by Lee Reich on another website and through Amazon's links discovered this book. I have read parts of this book over and over and it really makes me want to try growing some of the varieties of plants that are found on its pages. I went and bought a Hardy Kiwi plant this spring and can't wait until it matures enough to produce fruit. I am also interested in the Mulberry and the Pawpaw because of this book. Some of the information seems to be a little outdated now (it said that Hardy Kiwi needed to be planted in Male/Female pairs but there are self-pollinating varieties now), but most of the information is timeless and still is applicable.

5-0 out of 5 stars A taste teaser! I want to get these plants!
This book is, first of all, a wonderful read. It is full of historicalnotes, very interesting to this nonbotonist, and is fully researched. Advances have been made since it was written, and perhaps some of thesuppliers given in the back are no longer with us; but a good web searchwill remedy that. It describes the flavors, scents, and appearence of thefruits in succulent detail.Since I have read it, I have been buying andtrying to get friends to buy the various fruits listed. It is torture notbeing able to go out and buy jujubes, gumis, hardy kiwi, pawpaws, and allthe rest of the children of Pomona that are here delineated. A wonderfulbook, full of charming oddities and wit. ... Read more
