2-0 out of 5 stars Superficial and disappointing
The author has at least seven other books in a series of growing various vegetables. This book has the feeling of something written to spec without great depth or passion. Much of the information is generic, and the author and the book could have benefited from a bit more effort and research. There is needless lack of precision. The book is certainly of some use, but it could have and should have been better. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Picture-perfect apples with lackluster flavor dominate the American and European markets because they have the longest shelf life and broadest appeal. At the same time, there is a renaissance of interest in preserving precious, personality-packed heirloom apples. To lure people into joining this small but growing movement, Roger Yepsin has created this visually enchanting book devoted to the infinitely varied apple. In it, he talks about how apples are grown, stored, and used to make cider and harder alcoholic beverages, as well as for cooking and eating.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Red delicious book: looks great tastes bland
This book is a nice resource for antique apple descriptions, but it doesn't describe particularly many varieties, and the author's lack of expertise in the area shows.4-0 out of 5 stars Heritage apples
When I decided to plant some apple trees, I wanted apples I couldn't buy at the local grocery store.Information on antique varieties was hard to find, but this little book was a treasure trove.I kept it beside me as I went through my catalogs, comparing those descriptions to Yepsen's text and beautiful illustrations of both antiques and some modern varieties.Very useful, and a pleasure for the eyes as well. The only improvement I could ask for is that it would cover more apples.Perhaps another volume?

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have book for the apple lover
This little jewel of a book is the best reference to the unusual "antique" apple varieties that are enjoying a new popularity.Stunning watercolors, history of varieties, and useful descriptions fillthe book. Before we buy a tree, we consult "the book" to learnmore about each cultivar.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Buy this one for the pictures
If you're in need of ideas on how to design a French style kitchen garden, a potager, this book provides many beautiful color pictures of home and professional gardens, as well as the vegetables, herbs, and flowers typically grown by the French.A helpful encyclopedia of vegatables and herbs is provided along with the author's favorite recipes that highlight the garden's produce, again all beautifully photographs. This title is one in a series by Rosalind Creasy.Others, The Edible Italian Garden and The Edible Heirloom Garden are equally as delightful.Experienced gardeners may find the book geared more to the beginner, but it's a great resource to get those creative gardening ideas flowing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I bought this book for my husband because of the beautiful photos of preciously landscaped French vegetable gardens. But he says this is the most useful garden book we have, with more good, helpfulinformation on the types of vegetables we grow (squash, eggplant, lettuces, etc.) than any other.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated, very good.
After extensive reading on apples through history, I found this be very helpful. Well researched and nicely illustrated. Suggest also Brown9ing's The Story of the Fruit of Temptation, French's the History and Virtues of Cyder, and Juniper's Story of the Apple.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but not about growing peppers per se.....
I bought this book used because I wanted to compare the BBG CHILE PEPPER book with other pepper books and the price was right. I have a confession. I never eat peppers. I can grow anything that smacks of capsicum, but I don't even like the smell of green peppers on pizza. Okay, I make chili and do it the right way with several tablespoons of ground chili pepper, and I eat plenty of Asian food including various dishes with pepper, and I love Salsa, but I avoid items on the menu with the little chili pepper (Szechewan, "hot" Thai) and I no longer eat Black Pepper because it makes me sneeze. My son-in-law pops whole peppers in his mouth - right off the plant, and the hotter the better. He scoffs at Scoville units, and he's teaching the bolder of my granddaughters to engage in the same crass behavior. I know that Capsicum helps relieve pain, so he should feel no pain this summer. I prefer my Capsicum in tablet form or as an ointment.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good basic, no-nonsense kitchen gardening book
If the focus of your garden is vegetables or fruit, you need this book. Concise but informative, this book combines and updates three or four older books (some of which were hard to find in their original editions) by the same publisher into one handy, easily browsed book of techniques and varieties. The end result is a reference suitable for both beginners and experienced gardeners.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very complete and detailed
This helpful guide contains instructions for growing fruit and herbs as well as vegetables. It gives climate and soil requirements, and detailed growing instructions. It also discusses various species. This is the only vegetable gardening book I've come across that also includes extensive information on growing fruit, including all the major species that grow in the US, as well as semi-tropical species such as oranges for warmer climates. It even covers nut tress! The section on herbs is very large and complete. It even tells how to pollinate your own plants, when you have only a few. There are many excellent color pictures and illustrations. If you grow vegetables, fruit, or herbs, you need this book! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Is this about American or French vegetable gardens?
I was hoping this book would celebrate beautiful homegrown American vegetable gardens...like the kind you find by chance in a neighbor's backyard. Instead this book focused on the gardens of the rich and famous, which were mainly designed by landscape professionals, and highly influenced by the French. The pictures in this book failed to show me one vegetable garden that was truly breathtaking. Worst of all, most of the gardeners had professional assistants to maintain their gardens. This book is a waste of time and money- I absolutely hated it. Please don't waste your time or money on this book. Instead buy the House Beautiful Garden design book (on sale)...granted these gardens were also professionally designed by wealthy homeowners- they are beautiful to look at, and you can find some inspiration for your own home- plus it's much less patronizing than the Vegetable book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book of gardening dreams fulfilled
Beautiful American Vegetable Gardens, by Mary Tonetti Dorra takes you into a bucolic fantasy of enthralling design and impressive maintenance. These gardens were created to feed the eye as well as the stomach. It is filled with alluring photographs by Steve Elting, who captures the romance and variety of these splendid plots along with their abundant fruit. It is also filled with practical information on cultivation and design. There is no vegetable patch that wont profit from the experience, advice and sources shared by Dorra in her clear and unpretentious style The two dozen gardens range from magnificent to manageable, and cover all the geographic areas of the United States. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent text.
An exceptionally well written book. Dr. Bosland from NMSU, Las Cruces is recognized as one of the top pepper researchers in the country (along with Molly Kyle at Cornell). Dave DeWitt adds his ineffable brand of humor tothe thoroughly readable text. This book is not as technical as some otherbooks written for the hobbyist or small scale farmer, but it covers a widerange of topics concerning pepper production. I own a number of books aboutvegetable production in general and peppers in particular; this book is oneof my favorites. In addition, some excellent books about pepper pathogensare offered by the AVRDC in Taiwan.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fills all the needs of the average pepper grower.
The Pepper Garden provides everyone with a vast collection of information ranging from the history of peppers to the pests and diseases that attack them. Unfortunatly, the book falls short in providing the reader with in-depth information on growing peppers during the most crucial stage; seeds and germination. Overall, the book is a must-have reference for all gardeners interested in "growing fire"...

5-0 out of 5 stars Chile grower's bible
A comprehensive tool for the beginner chile pepper grower and a great reference manual for the more experienced. This book walks a novice through the entire growing process; from seed propagation techniques to garden layout. Covers the history of chile peppers from the beginning of recorded history (well, at least close) to present day commercial and home growing operations. No pepper afficianado should be without this manual. Some full color illustrations, many useful line drawings, and a bushel basket full of additional pepper seed sources. ... Read more
