4-0 out of 5 stars Complex book on simple living
My wife and I recently found a copy of this book and were greatly intrigued by the title. We really are sick of the "American Way" and want to buy our own land and get into organic farming, go "off grid" with solar and wind power and basically live life more simply. Pie in the sky? Hardly, as I have lived places where electricity didn't exist, and my wife and I are both into more simplified living, and we KNOW that there is a better way than the all-consumer all-the-time, fear and greed mentality that is the overriding trend in America in late 2002. So we got this book. And found it to be chock full of excellent and intriguing insights on organic orcharding. What trees go best with what, when they bllom and when to harvest. A great deal on the various varieties and general hardiness of a wide variety of fruit and nut trees. We were able to gleen valuable knowledge and look forward to the time we can stop dreaming and studying and start doing.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars He's got the system!
This is the book to have if you want a beautiful and productive garden, especially if you don't have a lot of room.I've been carrying this book around with me for years, just waiting until I finally owned my own house so that I could build the raised beds and the interlocking system that he describes in this book.4-0 out of 5 stars Practical, specific and very useful

4-0 out of 5 stars An extremely useful book for ideas for preserving foods.
As a relatively new gardner who plants more than she could ever eat in a season but who knows little about what do with harvests, I found this book useful, easy to follow, and fun to read. Even though this book is a little package--only 96 pages including the index--it is packed with information. The step by step instructions are relatively easy to follow and are not overly complicated by jargon. The author never assumes that one will already know how to can or even blanche.I appreciated the tips and explanations. This book provides directions for freezing whole meals as well as canning jellies and other more traditional preserving techniques.I especially liked the ideas for preserving herbs so I can have my own grown herbs for use in the kitchen all year long. The book has wonderful photos and an abundance of ideas for utilizing a whole harvest. I am pleased I found this book in time to get my plums, tomatoes, and all the other fruit and vegetables I grew preserved and put to good use ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Coverage of Pond Construction Techniques
This was the only book, that I was able to find, that covered all of the different techniques for pond construction, including fiberglass. For that reason alone it was worth the purchase price. But the book also contains anexcellent review of different pond styles and half of the book is a reviewof different pond plants and animals. But it's strongest point is it'scomplete coverage of all the different construction techniques and methods. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Struggle Continues
I live somewhat north of the area Mr. Masumoto writes about - where the San Francisco Bay Area Suburbs collide with the San Joaquin Farmlands. The Peach and Cherry Orchards and the Sweet Corn, Tomatoes and Strawberries are currently holding their own - but like Mr. Masumoto's Peaches and Grapes, only tenuously, and with great courage. If you would like to understand not only how these people live, but who and why they are, you should read this book. It is both beautifully written and thought provoking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Epitaph for a Peach
It is rare to read a book where the author works miracles with his hands and his words.I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys non-fiction but finds it dry, without humanity.David Mas Masumoto is anything but dry.His land may be at times, but his poetic prose is anything but.His relationship with his family, his family's farm and nature is a rare combination.I highly recommend this read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book about farming I've ever read
"Epitaph" is a gem and a masterpiece. Masumoto is a good farmer, a truly dedicated family man and a gifted writer. The story is in part about his love affair with a wonderful variety of peach. Read more
