5-0 out of 5 stars I learned a great deal about heirlooms from this book.
If you never knew what an "heirloom" was in terms of gardening, you will after this read. I came away from this book with a whole new perspective, admiration, and appreciation for maintaining the integrity of each individual plant, not matter what it was. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The "Temperate Climate" Fruit Expert.
This beautifully illustrated and photographed book is a very informative and easy to use reference for everyone who wants expert advice on how to plant and keep a fruit garden. This wonderfully organized book is divided into six sections:
3-0 out of 5 stars How Useful Is It?
How useful the "Fruit Expert" is depends on where you live.If you're English, this is probably a fine book for you; if you live in the States ... keep looking.I wish I had known this before I bought it; Iwish Amazon would give the publisher's city for all their garden books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Western Fruit Berries & Nuts
This is one of the best books ever written on fruit trees, berries, nut trees, grapes, etc. for the Western US.As a Master Gardener I reference it constantly. It doesn't use the standard USDA 10 zones, but a much more specific 19. Each type of fruit has its own chapter, with information on rootstock, fruiting date per variety, pruning type, mature size, and so forth. Their variety charts show name, zones, best features and shortcomings for each variety and an extensive narrative. It also contains chapters on grafting, subtropicals, container grown trees, pests and diseases, custom propagation and fruit growing in small areas.Written for the novice, it is outstanding in all respects. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Right On!!
I usually look in the library to see what books I would like to own. Miracle-Gro Guide to Growing Delicious Vegetables Fruits and Herbs is a book I am going to buy. The pictures are large enough to see what a product will look like. The advice is correct as well. I live in Arizona and these authors are aware that most products in Arizona can get badly sunburned in the summer months without shading. I am glad a publcation has finally come that can give good advice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This was one of my first gardening books and is still my favorite one. Perfect for the beginning gardener. Why aren't more gardening books organized like this one?

5-0 out of 5 stars An all time favorite
In my periodic attempts to grow vegetables, this book -- and its predecessor, "Crockett's Victory Garden," have been my constant and favorite companions. It's past time for this 1987 book to be updated and republished.
5-0 out of 5 stars An INVALUABLE tool, particularly for novices!
In my opinion, this book needs to be actively published again! I used this book as a guide to grow my first vegetable garden in Richmond, VT. It thoroughly explained EACH step in the process with text and illustrations/photos. My neighbor, whom I hadn't met yet, left a letter in my mailbox around August of that year.It contained a photo of my garden and a note saying that mine was the most beautiful vegetable garden she'd ever seen and thought I would appreciate the picture of it! I have checked this book out of the library each spring since and this year it was listed as "lost!" That's why I'm here on-line: buying an "acceptable" condition copy used rather than do without! BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU CAN! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars of natural beauty and human nature
As someone who has periodically travelled through downeast Maine, passing through miles of seemingly tractless spruce forests and barrens, I have wondered who lives there, and why. This book captures the answer to that question in a way which edifies the reader about the history and quaint charm of the region. Moreover, the book also suggests how people in similar circumstances find livelihoods, community, and even survival in the most unexpected places.A wonderfully educational and insightful read that makes the reader long to visit the region...those who do will find an austere beauty, hardy people, and newfound respect for the spirit of human enterprise... and they are likely to return to the area, as did the author. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
"Japanese Flowering Cherries" is a fabulousbook. Wybe Kuitert has done an excellent job of producing a book with a vast amount of information. The book is very informative about the wide variety of wild and garden varieties. It also discusses the history and appreciation of cherry trees. It also contains some very excellent photography, as well as art work relating to Japan's homage to the cherry tree. Overall, this book is an excellent resource if you want to start your own cherry tree garden, or you just want to become more knowledgeable about this beautiful tree. ... Read more

Editorial Review

"To Vanessa," runs the dedication to Anna Pavord's yardstick manual of creative kitchen gardening, "who planted a weed garden." None of your boring rows of antediluvian cabbages here, then: Pavord's vision of a "new kitchen garden" is a flexible contemporary version of that long-vanished institution, the potager, a garden where special vegetables were grown with flowering plants in arrangements that were both productive and pleasing to the eye. Pavord's contemporary spins on the theme include an alcoholic hedge and a city larder, but traditional designs get a look-in, too; even the oh-so-precious formal herb garden receives a much-needed fillip of imagination and color. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
This is my favorite gardening book.I put in a vegetable garden this year and THIS book was the basis of my handiwork.Beauty and bountiful harvests are the result of hard work. This book was an inspiration for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful ideas for designing vegetable gardens
The pictures and information in this book are gorgeous & informative. The only issue I had was that though vegetable gardens are meant to be useful & practical, in many instances the attractive aspects of hergardens neccessitated the plants going to seed, therefore becominginedible. The gardens were also often quite larger than the average personmight want to manage; but I enjoyed dreaming about having the energy &space to implement her designs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A storehouse of both history and horicultural practices
I am affiliated with a large strawberry grower and have had more than a passing acquaintance with Victor Voth. Mr. Handcock's work is so rich in strawberry history, horticulture and other useful information that I have been unable to put it down. I recommend it to Grower and shipper/packers alike for facinating reading...
