This book has made my wife and I excited about planting our next year'sgarden. The book gives easy-to-understand guidance on planting, raising, and cooking many biblical foods, and it explains how the foods relate toJewish holidays. It's obvious the author loves to garden, and hisenthusiasm comes across. The advice is expert and simple. The botanicalillustrations are also very pretty.I tried one recipe so far(apple-raisin-nut cake), and it was delicious. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good book for specific info only
Get this book if you want specific information on varieties of vegetables that do well in Georgia and specific planting dates for seed and transplants.Otherwise, this book is of marginal use. There is a lot of repeated information about soil amendments and a lot of vague references to pests.I would have liked to seen a section devoted to identifying and controlling pests and disease.I get the impression Walter Reeves just stuck his name on this book and left the rest up to the co-author and editor. ... Editorial Review

As Elizabeth Schneider points out in her introduction, the immigrant culture of America is constantly restocking our markets and produce stores with "ethnic" fruits and vegetables that were hitherto unknown to any but the most worldly gourmets. Just as ginger, bean sprouts, and avocados were once strange, exotic substances, so Vidalia onions, fava beans, and passion fruit are becoming more common in stores nationwide. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Have one in every kitchen library
I have the original of this book and find myself constantly reviewing it every time I come back from the tropical food markets. This book is very helpful even if one is familiar with and have grown up eating these kinds of fruits and vegetables. This book provides americanized recipes which is good because aside from being nutritious, most of these fruits and vegetables are beautiful and aesthetically presentable. You can serve fruits and vegetables that do not need to be masked by some gumbo-colored sauce. If you are the kind of cook who likes to serve beautiful dishes this book comes handy. You don't even have to follow the recipes just to use the vegetables. Once you become familiar with the vegetables you will discover how compatible they are with the common vegetables found in your regular supermaket on a dish of your own recipe. For example you could prepare a chicken dish with sliced tomatoes, potatoes, red and green bell peppers, carrots and bok choy with thickened chicken broth with your own choice of spices. The book details the following for each fruit and vegetable: Scientific name, description, beautiful illustrations, selection and storage, preparation and nutritional highlights.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but look into buying her brand new book first
I have an earlier edition of this book, and have really enjoyed using it.It includes background and the author's commentary on each fruit or vegetable (and, as one of the authors notes, not your "garden variety" fruit and vegetables, but unusual things like kumquats and quince that those of us who grew up on iceberg lettuce may not have encountered.)She also includes a sampling of recipes for each item. The recipes have the author's usual creative flair, and all the ones I have tried have been really great. But, unless I was really more interested in the fruit part of the equation, I would look into buying her new vegetable book first. It was just published in December 2001, and would therefore be more current. There has been so much change in bringing some of the more unusual foods to market that it may make most sense to have Schneider's most recent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating , informative, and much more than a cookbook!
I began to browse through Ms. Schneider's book because I had some unusual fruit on my hands that needed to be cooked. I became ENTHRAWLED by the fascinating information about vegetables and fruit from A to Z, but not our usual apples and oranges varieties. I couldn't put it down. I will be giving this book to everyone I know! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I've bought a few other books on backyard orchards and have been disappointed.I found this book at the library and it's the best I've seen. The other books made pruning seem very intimidating so I've been putting it off. After reading this book, I feel like I'm ready to give it a try.It covers all the fruits that interest me, even oddballs like currants and persimmons. The book contains all the things a beginner needs to know such as solving pest problems (insect, disease and animal), how/where to plant, pruning and a number of other subjects. The chapters are arranged in a logical sequence and the book is very easy to read. The second half of the book is devoted to the different fruits.Fruits are arranged alphabetically and there is anywhere from one to four pages devoted to each one.Even though this may not sound like much, each page is nicely arranged and gives a wealth of information.I especially like the handy symbols on the outer edges of each fruit page. For example, one very handy symbol is "attention required".One gardening glove means it's easy to grow, two gloves means some attention is required, three means moderately difficult and four means the plant is demanding.I've had a rough time with my peach tree and sure enough, the book gives peaches four gloves (demanding).Wish I had read this book before I started planting my orchard.I plan to buy a copy of this book for use as a reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative!
I bought this book as a gift but when I recieved it, I loved it so much that I wanted to keep it for my husband!Lots of information with pictures to help you with the various diseases fruit trees get.I would definately recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for My Needs
I was so pleased with the overall appearance of this book that I didn't even make it to the house to read it.I sat down at the picnic table and scanned it cover to cover!Backyard Fruits and Berries is helping me to identify and care for fruit trees and berries on a newly aquired property where the gardens have been neglected for years. The photos and illustrations are superb and the author instructs the reader how to make and use homemade organic products. This book is perfect for any beginner like myself. I even returned to purchase a second copy for my mother who already has basic knowledge.Thank you. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars very good info but may misleading
i have read the book. I believe the writer is very expert in this field too.
3-0 out of 5 stars Solid material but dated
Dr. Resh's book is copyrighted 2003 but was first published in 1993 and it looks like there were no updates or revisions in this version. The information he gives is good solid technique and practice that is the basis of any hydroponic system. I would put this in the beginner to intermediate knowledge range. His diagrams of systems are strictly from a homemade point of view but the art of building DIY systems has grown tremendously since he wrote this 12 years ago. One last note - in his resource lists there is not one mention of the internet.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Food Writing Is All About
Amal Naj's "Peppers" is now more than ten years old, but, if anything, these hot darlings are even more in favor with the American public than they used to be. I'm sure Naj would add a chapter or two if he were writing today, but the book is nevertheless delightful. I particularly enjoyed Naj's coverage of the attempts to find possible living ancestors of modern day "chilies" in South America, and the importance such research has to the protection of the modern agricultural crop. His extensive writing on the war for the "Tabasco" trade mark is first-class storytelling. Of course, as a New Mexican, I do enjoy reading many pages of lore about our state's most important crop. The most flavorful peppers are indeed New Mexican.4-0 out of 5 stars Peppers
This book was a great read despite the fact that one would not ordinarily expect it to be so given the subject matter. It was so well written that I found myself reading whole chapters of it out loud to my wife.4-0 out of 5 stars Great pepper lore for all chiliheads
Being born in India you should expect Amal Naj to have been raised on peppers. Funnily enough his love for hot pursuits originated in Northern Ireland after living on potatoes and other bland foods for a long time. He sets of on a journey around the world tracking down peppers, salsas, stories of old and people in the pepper business. And what an amazing bunch.Read more

This book is a fascinating study of the historical and cultural contexts for everyday foods. Each chapter looks at the history of a fruit or vegetable that is a common part of American foodways. The writers fill outthe historical background with intriguing discussions of the social andcultural norms that are associated with nine different foods and also withtobacco use.Readers can find out the real scoop on Johnny Appleseed andalso discover why the cities of Fulton and South Fulton host a bananafestival in two towns that straddle the border of Kentucky and Tennessee. The book is an excellent resource for information about common foods inAmericans' diets, but it also provides a model for writing a social historyof significant aspects of everyday life. You'll never eat an orange or aslice of watermelon in quite the same way after reading this interestingand well-written book that presents solid folklife scholarship in adigestible format. ...
