ideas i'd like to implement
I've been watching hgtv endlessly since we begain serarching for a new home in the spring of 2002. Really fun book w/ fantastic photos
I spotted this book at my local (store) ...As a fan of "Surprise Gardener", I had to take a look.I was amazed to find that Susie's home decor is *very* similar to the colors and style selections I've made in my own (albeit much more modest) home.I've also been keeping a style file for about 3 years now, and it's been very helpful.I bought the book, and have enjoyed it.I'm already planning on making the forsythia wreath for my front door (have been searching for just such a simple wreath).

Depends on what you need...
If you have a large (at least a half acre; preferably more) garden, the scale of many of the projects in this book will make sense to you and you would probably find rating this book any less than five stars to be a kind of joke. After all, the photographs (as expected from anything associated with Taunton) are superb and there are drawings clear enough to help you develop your own plans for arbors, paths, and other structures. If, like me, you have a very small garden (5-6000 square feet) onto which you struggle to impose some kind of order so that the whole thing does not devolve into a nursery-like display of perennials or a hardware store-like show of a picnic table and benches, you will probably not find much of use here -- one star, at best.Read more

Food
I loved this book. Mostly the simple food ideas Jane has. Her writing style makes me want to go outside and eat a simple meal and enjoy the world around me. I wish she would write a Pure Style cookbook with the way she prepares every day food she and her family enjoys. I'd love to go to Jane's some summer afternoon and have a great meal or a winter evening by the roaring fire.

a few things caught my eye
lots of ideas, too much useless stuff in the beginning on tools, not many new ideas

fun and easy
I wish I had this book when I first started in woodworking.The book is aimed at the true beginner, including a discussion of the tools needed to complete the projects.For the beginner, there would be the satisfaction of being able to make something that looks nice and might be completed in a weekend.For the more experienced woodworker, it's nice to have a change of pace and make something fun and easy with no complicated joinery.For anyone, the author has created some easy-to-follow plans based on some great and useful ideas.I plan on making several of the projects for my home and maybe some extras to sell at a street fair.

Needs Better Palns
This book is spoiled by poor plans for the projects.Here is an example: for the fire wood brace the cut list say 4 legs 3/3"x5-1/2"x36".So, should this board be a, say, 2x4, or maybe a 1x12.The book dooes not include this information on any of the projects. ... Read more

beautiful projects,check for measurement errors in book
This book has the most attractive furniture I have seen in any how-to books.However, when I created a garden bench (the back slats of this particular bench are cut to create a diamond shape of open space betweenthe upper two slats and lower two slats) I found errors in the layout,(drawings and measurements) of the center rail.Either the rail must becut lower, or the mortises must be moved.My bench turned out beautifullydespite the required modifications.I will make other furniture frompatterns in this book, but I will definitely check the layout measurementsbefore I mark and cut--rather than assume they are correct!

Good step-by-step instructions demonstrate a variety of country-style projects using paint, stamps, stencils, terra-cotta pots, and occasionally an existing structure like a fence or cement patio floor or piece of wooden furniture. Except for a very few items requiring basic woodworking skills, and perhaps a few necessitating a bit of decorative painting practice, most projects are easily accomplished by the novice crafter.
