Editorial Review

In essence, creating a "garden house" means pulling together the best and most comfortable aspects of indoor comforts and combining them with the natural delights of the garden, bringing the outdoors in to create a restorative, uplifting, and comfortable home. In this lushly illustrated idea book, Bonnie Trust Dahan offers a wealth of innovative ideas, designs, and delights: aromatic herbs near the bath, an indoor hammock, a stunning birch log with branches as a coat rack, an outdoor swing on an indoor porch, a rustic potting bench as a kitchen enhancement. Room by room, she takes the reader through a multitude of inventive fantasies that can be realized and created by a person living in a hilltop mansion in the country or a walk-up studio apartment in the heart of a bustling, crowded urban center. Using the many examples shown and described, the reader can customize his or her own dream garden house, and will be inspired to do so by this lovely book. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars evocative, comfortably stylish, gorgeous rooms and pieces
I first saw this book in Restoration Hardware, where I was working at the time. It was an *immediate* hit with the style conscious staff. One womangot a dreamy look on her face as she read it "I could live in any ofthese" and I know exactly what she meant. It is of particular interestto those in Northern California as many of the resources listed in the backare local to us. A charming and keepable book. ... Read more

Editorial Review

What's a dyed-in-the-wool gardener to do when faced with stubborn Old Man Winter's downright refusal to let much of anything grow? Force it, that's what. Forcing is the art of convincing a bulb, branch, houseplant, or cutting to flower when it would otherwise be dormant. So when the drabness of winter and its attendant exorbitant price for cut flowers hits you, try forcing. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So fun and easy!
Katherine Whiteside makes forcing look really fun and easy, and it turns out it is! This book inspired me to try all sorts of things I've only seen in pictures. Her ideas are simple and wonderful and the way she writes is so down to earth that you feel confident that you can do it!
5-0 out of 5 stars Expert gardening advice blends with floral styling
Expert gardening advice blends with floral styling techniques as Katherine Whtieside offers an introduction to the finer art of forcing bulbs, branches, and other flowers in Forcing, Etc. Plant features include the most common flowers which are grown through forcing, offering tips for plant pairing and arranging. With Richard Felber's lush photos throughout, Forcing, Etc. makes an exceptional visual display in addition to a practical guide.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty to look at, but not alot of substance
I absolutely agree with the review given by Tom Krischan on 1/28/2000.This book is beautiful to look at, with lots of photographs that arewell-taken and gorgeously displayed. That's the good part.... Unfortunatelythere isn't a lot of information in here that even the most basic gardenerwouldn't already know from other sources. Bulbs are the primary area ofdiscussion, with houseplants and cuttings from trees and shrubs also beingdiscussed sparingly. It's not the best book for in-depth answers to yourother forcing needs. It is nice to look at, though. A definite fixture foraesthetics on my coffee table at home, if nothing else. ... Read more

this book has everything you need to know about installing and maintaing interior plantscapes and if you are interested in such things i reccomend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book for begginner or above
I got this book to learn about caring for indoor plants for a new business it is very insightful and helpful. I do mostly pest control in buildings and often am asked about the plants and problems they may have this book is a good help in answering questions and learning about the different plants and how to manage them. Maybe for experinced people this maybe basic info but is helpful. My wife really liked it with help for plants in the house.

1-0 out of 5 stars Houseplant Book
When I recieved this book I was so disappointed I returned it within 2days.As a horticulturist, I am constantly seeking out new referencebooks.I had hoped for more information on indoor plantings, the focus wason potted plants rather than installation of indoor planters and gardens. This was a skinny little overpriced houseplant book. The author did discusssoils and lighting, however most basic horticulture text books with a muchlower price tag can offer far more information. This is certainly tooelementary for the professional and the hobbiest is better off with"The Houseplant Expert" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe the most accurate portrayal of the grizzly that has ever been written
Grizzly Country is a collection of stories of the first hand experiences of a man who lived his entire life in the wilderness with the great bears. It is a realistic view of the grizzly as he really is, not a blood and guts story of how "It's us or them" nor is it a highly emotional story about the plight of the bears, but rather a realistic view of the bear and of his past and future.
5-0 out of 5 stars A grand old classic by man with a lifetime of experience
Andy Russell grew up in grizzly country, married a young woman who hadalso grown up in grizzly, and raised a family in grizzly country. Thestories are the real thing, with all the wonder and humor that comes fromlifetimes of experience with wildlife. This book, with Frank Duqesne's NOROOM FOR BEARS, and Enos Mills' THE GRIZZLY, is a classic that belongs onthe shelf of everyone interested in the grizzly and its future in NorthAmerica.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the definative houseplant book - but still good.
The Miracle Gro guide to houseplants is much better than many other houseplant books in one respect: there are so many detailed photographs on the actual care and maintanence of houseplants. Many other houseplant books I've read have drawings or just explanations of how to repot plants and other similar tasks. There are some great step-by-step instructions in this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Guide to Growing Healthy Houseplants
Overall very concise and informative on each specific house plant. My only peeve is that the pictures of each species be larger.Small pictures makes it hard to identify the right species of unknown plants.

Editorial Review

TV gardener Rebecca Kolls brings her lively personality to the page with this beginner's guide to gardening. The reader will find basic advice on choosing tools, composting, and preparing beds as well as more substantial directions on growing and caring for vegetables and flowers, trees and shrubs, lawns, and water gardens throughout the seasons. Kolls gives brief lessons here and there in fertilizing, watering, cleaning tools, doctoring houseplants, starting seeds, and making simple crafts, while quick tips in shaded boxes are sprinkled throughout the text. An alphabetized section on vegetables with facts on site, growing, harvest, storage etc. is at the back of the book. Read more

The content of the book was helpful.Would recommend to anyone that is interested in house plants.

3-0 out of 5 stars More Entertaining Than Actually Useful
There is a lot to like about this book, which offers a listing of 240 plants along with photographs, descriptions, and needs of each--all in a compact size.Even so, I would warn users not to think of it as a houseplant Bible: its descriptions can be misleading and it includes a host plants unsuitable for use as houseplants.3-0 out of 5 stars Small can be handy, but more difficult to read.
This book is designed to be small and handy to use.It would be especially good if you want to take it with you when houseplant shopping. The book does give you a moderate amount of information on each plant.I didn't really care for the little symbols on the side.I prefered reading the description.I found because of the small size the print is also small and the information is run together which makes it more difficult to read.Read more

It's quite a simple formula: if you're looking to include tropical plants into your home or garden, you can't be without this book. Gorgeous color photos by Luca Invernizzi Tettoni pack a display of equally gorgeous plants accompanied by details on growing needs, propagation, cultivars, and use in home or garden environments. From ferns and succulents to gingers and bananas, a wide variety of plants of all sizes and types are covered to delight any who live in warm environments or have greenhouses to stock.

Neither a good specimen guide nor glamorous coffee table showpiece, this nonetheless fills a gap in my growing library of tropical gardening books. It could be a nice introduction to tropical plants, but anyone who wants to actually garden with tropical specimens would be better served by other books, perhaps best of all, Gardening in the Tropics, ISBN: 0881923095 .4-0 out of 5 stars A good reference
