3-0 out of 5 stars Useful information, but lacking structure
This book was easy to read and had lots of beautiful orchid pictures. However, there the book is very lacking in stucture. It simply goes through different types of orchids and meanwhile gives you tips on watering, fertilizing, etc. as you go.I have read a few other orchid books and this just seems to be a conglomeration of the useful hints and tips I've found in those. For a much more useful book try Ortho's All About Orchids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this orchid book
What a great orchid book.I'm a beginner, but I'll use it forever.Absolutely wonderful photos and references.I saved an orchid using instructions in this book.I recommend it, especially at this great price.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for your orchid library!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just What I was looking for!
I've been working for several years to become more self-sufficient, at least in growing my own food, but I have a very small lot, and growing for long-term subsistence (for canning and freezing) would be difficult on such a small piece of land.Mr. Coleman's book is just what I needed, and the fact that he's also in Maine is definitely a PLUS!
4-0 out of 5 stars GeosminMom
After joining a farmer's market, this book/author was mentioned several times in conversation with other growers. Since we had recently "retired" to upstate NY, I thought it might be a good thing to see how someone else turned a negative to a positive(such as our frozen north). The result- with the help of my 81 year old friend we are building a hoop house (or 2)instead of the green house I originally desired. Simple and useful-sums the book up best!

4-0 out of 5 stars Grow vegetables year 'round!
Coleman is an experienced organic gardener and has written previous books on organic gardening.Whether you are looking for new organic gardening techniques or ways to improve a self-sustaining lifestyle, Coleman's book will be a valuable resource. He explains how to grow delicious, organically-grown vegetables from your home garden year 'round. He shows how to design inexpensive, simple cold frames and unheated mobile greenhouses. He explains how to use them along with a root cellar to grow a variety of organic vegetables each suited to their season.Success depends on growing a large variety of vegetables each suited to their season, and in cold frames, mobile greenhouses, and root cellars.Coleman's book will surely guide the grower to extend the growing season! ... What an incredible garden. Allan has acres of the most beautiful plants in his backyard. This CD is very informative and a lot of fun to use.If you haven't ever used an educational CD before, this is a good one to try.If you're a gardener like me, you're always interested in seeing great gardens. The menu for the program is a layout of Allan Armitage's own garden. When you select a section of his garden, you can choose videos and photos of the plants he grows. He tells you what he likes to grow, where he grows it and why. This virtual tour allows you to see and hear one of America's most notable gardening experts. Armitage is quite a storyteller!4-0 out of 5 stars Armitage At His Best!
This disc truly captures the wit and wisdom of one of America's premier perennial gardeners, Dr. Allan Armitage of the University of Georgia.Dr. Armitage has a wealth of knowledge and experience regarding the care and growing of a wide variety of perennial plants, which is reflected in this guided tour of his own personal garden in Athens, Georgia.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The book that we have been waiting for
The amount of work that has gone into this excellent book shows clearly in the clear writing and great images throughout. Not everything is Bonsai now, we are learning about other cultures, and their path to what we find is a mutual interest. This is not a book about Vietnamese Bonsai at all but a book about creating landscape in miniature. Popular for many centuries but little know outside its home, Hon Non Bo is exciting in concept and immensely pleasurable in developing. Not difficult as an art form but does need this book to explain to you how to get started and how to develop your understanding of this ancient art. I enjoyed the book and found myself reaching for it a number of times this year. I recommended it to all my classes, friends and students.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars * * * * * Go Garden Grow! * * * * *
This book is great for the casual smoker that wants to learn to grow but doesn?t plan on becoming a full-scale commercial grower. It?s easy to understand combination of graphs, lists, and high quality images are easy on the eyes and entertaining to the brain. Easy Marijuana Gardening will provide anyone with the know-how to set up a small plot in their basement or closet (or any other place indoors) with little fuss. I definitely recommend this book for a good brief read; at 73 pages this book can?t be beat.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not very good.
Like most of the grow books this contains basic information that most growers need but there was a complete lack of information regarding how to actually set up a system. Save your money and buy a different book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book for beginners
Two months ago, I had an interest in growing, but no real idea about where to begin. Thanks to Ed's book, which abounds with step-by-step instructions, huge full-color pictures, and simple cost-effective growing tips, I now have a closet garden with nine healthy females to be harvested in just a few weeks.I'm no horticulturalist, but the instructions in EMG are so easy to follow that I'm set for smoke for a good long time! Thanks Ed! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A little bit of everything
This book is definitely over-rated by others (my opinion). However, I would agree with a couple of reader's comments that some of the pictures are good, but the discussion on the topics of bonsai are too general (and kind of shallow indeed). If anyone would like to know about or even start a bonsai, I would recommend a better substitute: Bonsai (101 Essential Tips) that costs less than $5.00.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped my skills grow as well as my trees....
Of several of the bonsai books I have purchased, this is excellent.Photography is wonderful, line drawings and instructions are excellent. The text is excellent and good reading instruction for novice to more skilled bonsai grower.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn Bonsai Techniques
"This book shows step-by-step growing and training techniques, how to choose bonsai styles and tools, and it provides a comprehensive guide to plant selection. 'Learn the secrets of pruning, shaping, watering, and care requirements to ensure success with your miniature landscape in a pot.'" (summary by South Texas Library System)

Editorial Review

Anyone who's ever mourned a failed potted plant will welcome the encouragement and practical advice this simple, colorful guide offers. The authors use several criteria--foliage and floral effects, trailing or climbing habits, and suitability for particular locations, such as bathrooms--to identify the best plant candidates for each part of the home. Concise plant listings are grouped in such sections as "Houseplants for Large Rooms," "Herbs for the Kitchen," and "Houseplants with Bold-Colored Flowers," and each listing includes plant size, care instructions, and is accompanied by a detailed photograph of leaves, flowers, and fruit (where appropriate). A section at the front gives tips on plant placement, general maintenance, and propagation; for convenience, the index lists both common and Latin names. With detailed listings for more than 400 plants and suggestions for many more, it's a great resource for every houseplant lover. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Now where did I put that plant?
This book has an interesting twist that you won't find in most plant books - it has a whole section on what plants go well in what rooms. It includes the standard "How this book work" and plant basics.I like how they have plant care broken down into "Everyday care" and "Longer-term Maintenance."Every day care includes picking your plants, transporting plants, light, temperature, feeding, watering and cleaning.Longer-term maintenance includes repotting, pruning and training. These sections are short, but cover the necessary basics. There is a section on propagating and a section on problems (over/under watering, pests and diseases). There is a section on choosing your plants for their flower (Floral Effect) or for their beautiful or interesting leaves (Foliage Effect). If you are looking for a plant with yellow leaves or a plant with sword shaped leaves the Foliage Effect section a good place to look. There is a section call "Special Uses" which includes "Houseplants for Beginners," Houseplants Tolerant of Neglect," "Beneficial Houseplants," and many more.5-0 out of 5 stars Really Liked It!
All I know about caring for houseplants is that you have to water them now and then.No wonder that I have killed most plants that I have owned! This book was really helpful for me.It is great in that it's broken down into categories such as locations (windowsill, low light, full light, humid rooms, offices etc). There are also sections for different types of flowers (fragrant, winter blooming) and foliage. And for me there are the sections on houseplants tolerant of neglect and houseplants for beginners.Every plant listed in the book is accompanied by a nice picture.Next to each plant there are directions on the type of light it needs, fertilization and watering guidelines and the temperature and humidity it needs. The beginning has great tips for everyday care, trouble shooting problems.5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful for this beginner!
Unlike another reviewer, I found this book very useful.I am pretty much a beginner with houseplants.I don't understand why some plants fail and others don't.This book was very helpful to me because it gives detailsabout which plants like low light, full sun, lots of water, a dryenvironment, etc.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars House Plants (RD Home Handbook Series)
The content of the book was helpful.Would recommend to anyone that is interested in house plants.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gets to the point with helpful information
I keep this book right next to my watering can and refer to it for helpful hints every time one of my plant leaves turn yellow, or brown or another problem turns up. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Beginner's Guide
This is an great book for beginners plus it's cute and small and easy to read (this book would be especially appropriate for teenagers and older children).Chapters include: "Choosing Houseplants" including how to match plants to the growing conditions in your home and how to grow bulbs indoors; "Light and Humidity;" "Watering Know-How;" "Feeding Your Plants;" "Pots and Potting On;' "Pruning and Training;" "Propagating Houseplants;" "Tackling Pests and Diseases;" "Favorite Houseplants;" and "Display & Arrangement." The "FavoriteHouseplants" chapter includes descriptions and growing requirements for 20 easy-to-grow plants including English Ivy, Philodendrons, Rubber Plants, Boston Ferns, African Violets, Cyclamens, Hyacinths, Poinsettias and Geraniums, etc. "Display & Arrangement" has instructions for container plants, hanging baskets and terrariums. The only reservation I have about this book is that some of the symbols used to designate humidity and amount to water are a bit confusing; in particular, I had a little trouble telling the difference between the medium drop ("water moderately") and the small drop ("water sparingly"). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for a Phal. lover.
This book is a tour de force. The knowledge poured into the pages of this book is amazing. The meat of the book is organized such that each subgenus of Phalaenopsis is covered by a chapter. Each chapter begins with a flow chart for distinguishing members of the subgenus by key features such as sepal size and spur prominance. Each species and it's other forms are then described in detail with regards to anatomy, phylogeny, distribution, general facts, and occasionally tips for cultivation. This book serves as a great reference. The index was well thought out and all of the species are ordered alphabetically under the index entry "Phalaenopsis". In the middle of the book are several pages of color images on gloss paper with the species organized alphabetically. The book recently helped me correctly identify a Phal. that was incorrectly labelled by a vendor. For many species, Christenson notes when other species have been confused for it. When used in combination with Fragrant Orchids by Frowine, it becomes easy to search for fragrant Phals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Abundant information, but poorly written and badly organized
The book contains about 323 pages composed of: 11 pages on history and distribution, 13 pages on orchid anatomy and basic taxonomy, 219 pages on each species, 21 pages on cultivation and growing, 15 pages on hybrids, 7 pages on conservation and the future, 27 page bibliography, and a 10 page index. 54 pages of color photographs (most pictures are small measuring only 2" x 3" in size).3-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding taxonomy book, nothing else
Eric Christenson's book is outstanding, unrival on phalaenopsis taxonomy and most welcome. There you will learn that Phalaenopsis amabilis var. formosa should be known as Phal. aphrodite var. formosana. Surprisingly the text doesn't mention var. formosana is fragant. Read more
