5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL LITTLE BOOK
I raise African Violets strictly as a hobby.I have owned and used this great little book for a number of years now and have found it to be quite valuable hobbyist like myself. It has a number of very nicely done illustrations, both color photos and black and white drawings.Like another reviewer, I have found the Q&A Section of the books to be more than useful.I have yet to come across a question that this section did not at least touch on at the very least, or refer me to where I could find the answer. The text is well done and quite understandable.I have a number of other books on the same subject and some of those get quite "techy" at times...not so this volume.Recommend this one highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book with much information for the novice!
Tony Clements' "African Violets" book is an excellent, one-stopreference with a wealth of information.5-0 out of 5 stars great reading-I'm trying their technique of hybridising-
Very interesting book.I've already had success with stem propogation. This book explains how to cross pollenate two different colored violets.I just cross pollenated a single white flowered violet with a double pink flowered violet. I won't find out if it's a success for at least a year but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a bi-color double bloom. We'll see. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Most of us don't have the wherewithal to create conservatories and sunrooms on the extravagant scale of the ones documented here, but even those who are just looking to spruce up a little porch or carry the outdoors feel into living and dining areas will find plenty of inspiration in the lush color photos that fill this gorgeous volume. Text is minimal, providing only a very general overview of design considerations and no real specifics about the plants themselves. For a more instructional approach, you'll have to look elsewhere, but for a visual feast to get the creative juices flowing, this is a delight. Read more

Editorial Review

What spring is to your garden, autumn is to your conservatory: it's time to plan and plant, tidy and till, and bring your green thumb indoors. Ann Bonar's guide includes an A to Z listing of more than 700 conservatory plants, with more than 130 color illustrations. From Abutilon to Zantedeschia, Bonar describes the particulars of flower and fragrance, climbing tendencies and hardiness, and requirements for light, temperature, moisture, and feeding. For the winter gardener, the plant directory is reason enough to add it to your garden shelf, but the other features (how to display the plants, advice on managing the environment and maintaining healthy plants, and an appendix of plant and equipment suppliers) will be greatly appreciated as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The challenges and rewards of raising Alpine plants
Award-winning rock gardener Rex Murfitt presents Creating And Planting Alpine Gardens: How To Build Small Rock Gardens And Work With Alpine Plants, a guide to the challenges and rewards of raising Alpine plants, especially in lowland climates. Alpine plants evolved on high, windy sites and do not adapt well to hot summers or moist soil - to survive, they need top-quality drainage, good light, protected rock crevices, and gritty soil. Able to thrive in limited growing space, can be raised in rock gardens, raised beds, containers, or other variations; Creating And Planting Alpine Garens walks the reader through the details of what preparations to make, and what pitfalls to watch out for. Black-and-white photographs with some sections of inset color photographs illustrate this hands-on, easy-to-use guide for gardeners at all levels of experience.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, specialized gardening subject
If you are interested in designing and building a rock garden using Alpine plants you will find this specialized book a valuable resource. The author covers everything from designing the area, to working with stone effects, building raised beds, preparing the soil, getting the right exposure and selecting the right plants.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas for displaying your plants
Making Plant Places is a wonderful book for people who want to do more with their plants than simply stick them in pots on a shelf. The projects are really striking and so original -- you would expect to pay a fortunefor them in the store, but the materials used are really inexpensive andthe finished product is just beautiful. (Who knew that chicken wire couldbe so upscale?) I'm not especially artistic or crafty, but the directionswere easy to follow and the end result is amazing. I particularly love thewall sconces and the fancy wire hangers because they're so unique and itreally changes the look of a room to have plants hanging from the walls andceiling, not just sitting on the coffee table. Gorgeous photos in thecolour section, too. Highly recommended! ... Read more

Well the book seems to give great advice on paper, but after using his tonics and potions, all my plants took sick and most got bugs and died. 5-0 out of 5 stars JERRY BAKER'S HAPPY, HEALTHY HOUSEPLANTS
THIS IS MY FIRST EXPERIENCE AT BUYING A USED BOOK, BUT IT WON'T BE MY LAST.THE BOOK WAS IN PERFECT CONDITION AND WAS WRAPPED VERY SECURELY.I AM A BEGINNING GARDENER AND THE BOOK WAS VERY HELPFUL TO ME. I'M LEARNING PLANT NAMES, POTTING CONDITIONS AND AND GETTING AN OVERALL COURSE IN THE BEAUTY OF PLANTS.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information; definitely not for everyone
It is important to note that this is not a reference for plant varieties, but rather a "...for Dummies" style guide to houseplant selection, maintenance, and propagation. The information is general, rather than plant-specific, and there are no specimen pictures in this book.Chapters are organized by subject, such as lighting considerations, warning sign recognition, & interior decorating, with cartoon pictures to illustrate specific points.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish there were more good houseplant books.
This is an excellent book! This book isn't for the person who wants a short, general discription of the comon houseplant. This book has about 40 plant families. It give the history, growth habits, growing instructions that are far beyond the general information found in most houseplant books. Some of the plants are readily available, some are available in nurseries or greenhouse and a few may only be available by mail order. This is a good book for those who enjoy their houseplants and knowing as much as they can about them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Complete
This book is not only beautiful with full color images but delivers complete instructions for making simple water features to more intricate designs. You will be inspired to create your own designs as well as following the instructions between it's cover. At the very least this would make a beautiful "coffee table" book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Small water features
Don't be fooled by the title - these are water gardens that will work indoors or out. This is the first book I've seen that focuses on SMALL water gardens. Usually I find that books on water gardens show a couple of small ones then go on to plan something they call a pond and I call a lake. I don't have space for a lake, but I do like having a water feature. Better still, I like two of them. 4-0 out of 5 stars SMALL water gardens
