Of all the plant books I own, and that's a lot, this is the one I find myself refering to constantly. The Houseplant Encyclopedia is easy to read, and has a humorous tone to it at times. This book was the one that finally showed me the RIGHT way to propagate a Snake Plant. (HINT: The cuttings have to be stuck in a certain direction in the soil or nothing will happen.) (...) You'll find yourself refering to it for humidity tips, feeding info and watering pointers. Plus she reveals whether talking to your plants really does help, or just annoys your roommates.Read more

Simple instructions
On impulse I had recently purchased several small cactii and never even considered how to care for them. This guide was a VERY easy read and I finished it in an hour. The chapters are layed out in an easy to follow sequence and written so that a novice such as myself could easily understand thier content and they had a nice touch of humor too. After reading it I felt this is a VERY basic guide ment to get you started toward caring for and enjoying these plants and I would recommend it to anyone interested in raising a cactus.

Best Reference Garden Books Ever
This, and all other Random House Books of this genre, are consumate reference books for the serious or semi-serious gardener. Photos show entire plant from root to bloom and give all information required for cultivation. Wonderful for determining what to order amidst far-blown catalogue jargon. A must if you on well on the path to becoming a serious gardener indoors or out. (We all do both, don't we?)

A comprehensive, well illustrated and indispensable guide
Random House's guide to Indoor and Greenhouse plants Vol. II (I have not yet read Vol. I)is the first popular exotic plant dictionary I have seen that can approach the quality and comprehensiveness of the much more expensive Exotica or Tropica by Graf.This book provides clear descriptions and very nice photos of a variety of exotic plants from around the globe.Unlike many indoor plant books, this does not limit itself to the plants typically found in an average garden center, but covers many collector plants.The book's coverage of South African, Australian, Asian and South American species is much more comprehensive than any I have seen in other popular plant dictionaries.Entries are limited to physical description of each species, habitat and growth data, and brief information on pot and greenhouse cultivation.There are no separate sections on cultivation in this volume.I have been waiting for a book like this for some time and highly recomend it to both ! ! casual home gardeners and to collectors. ... Nice pictures...but
I would like to let potential buyers know that if you are not a complete beginner then this book may not be very useful to you.The book is very attractive and looks nice on my shelf, but the information is very basic. Also, the index and plant directory offer latin names only (with nocross-reference to common names), which is useless if you don't have adegree in botony.If you did know all of the latin names, you probablywouldn't need such basic information...

a bit outdated, but...
This book is a bit outdated as many of the plants in the book are no longer the most common houseplants.Most of the book is a listing of these common houseplants and how to care for them.Lighting, watering, and feeding are expressed in combinations of odd symbols that take a while to get used to (and the ledgend is of no help with this).The pages are a bit lacking in in-depth information and the pages are filled with whitespace and plain photos.On tho other hand, the information on pests and other growing conditions are useful. The book also tells you what to look for when buying plants though this information is covered in other more up-to-date books.An OK reference book if you can get it cheap and you grow the plants listed.

What a wealth of knowledge!!!!
This is a great book!The author is apparently an extremely knowledgable indoor gardener and she shares this information in an easy to read enjoyable book.All aspects of indoor gardening are covered from decorating with plants, care and requirements, planting and placement.Included in the book is an encyclopedia of common houseplants with plant requirements and pictures to help you identify all those plants you never knew the names of!!If you have houseplants this book is a MUST.

Bamboo Garden here I come!
On the design side, this book succeeds very well, there's all kinds of information here about indoor garden design elements and practices including four design plans.One nice feature of this book is it's emphasis on historical gardening practices, especially those of the Victorians (there's even a list of rare book dealers specializing in botanical history at the end of the book in case you wish to see what your great-great-grandparents were reading).Included here are terrariums, Wardian cases and water gardening, each with a picture right out of garden books from the 1860's.The most intriguing entry in this section is "The Epiphyte Tree" -- a branch or log on which you grow epiphytes (plants such as tillandsias, hoyas, certain orchids and bromeliads, that grow on other plants).Read more

Good care manual
This book is divided into two sections:
Good Beginners Guide
I feel that this book is geared more towards the beginner and in that respect it does a very good job. Everything a newcomer to the hobby is likely to need to know is there, well written and photographed. Even in a book geared towards helping the less experienced grower, new things can be learned by the "so called experts." There is a good though limited selection of plants and all the necessary information regarding their care and propagation. One minor irritation to me and not just aimed at this particular book, is why authors assume that their readership will automatically be interested in both true cacti and the other succulents and vice versa. They are I suppose trying to get two books into one and sometimes they fail on both counts.

Not for those in Southwest US
I was disappointed in this book.I was hoping to find information about growing succulents outside in Arizona.This plant is geared toward those in colder climates who want to grow plants in pots that can be moved in or out depending on the weather.Read more
