4-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable reference
An invaluable reference book for those interested in urban park design. 3-0 out of 5 stars Reply to A Blunderous Attempt
I haven't read the book, but as a production manager for a publishing company for a number of years, I can only say that it is not the author's responsibility or fault that there were errors. It is the copyeditor's responsibility to make sure that two plus two equal four(even in artwork), and the proofreader's responsibility to make sure there are no misspellings. It's nice if the author can catch them, but they rarely do--that's why we hire copyeditors and proofreaders.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for introduction of Land Development
I got this book just one month ago. This book is very good for the introduction of Land Development. As for the units, I think that some engineers don't like S-I Units (especially the engineers in the east coast). But in the future, all the people around the world will use it.1-0 out of 5 stars A Blunderous Attempt
The author makes a poor effort to even proof read her work.Several ofthe examples of design are filled with mathematical errors that someonewith a professional license should not be making. With most of theprofessionals in the field of land development using English units, theauthor's insistent use of metric makes her work difficult to examine andeven less useful as a design guide. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Study OfLandscape As A Facet Of The Imagination
Mirrors of Paradise is a truly inspired presentation of a diverse sampling of Fernando Caruncho's architectural genius writ large on the landscape. A highly imaginative gardener by disposition, Caruncho possesses an idiosyncratic eye for wrinkles in the formal geometry of what is usually mundane. And the capacity to ingeniously comment on what he observes through design innovations which exhibit both wit and poignancy. To take but one example of this phenomena, in the Ollauri Garden which was designed in the mid nineteen-eighties, where a traditional water jet might be placed in the middle of numerous individual fountains making up a large flat reflecting pool, Caruncho plants single tall cypress trees in stone troughs. What a revelation this transformation of the ordinary creates! Such touches of imaginative whimsy permeate this man's work. But it is not caprice for its own sake. Every action is deliberate and conveys meaning. Every formal element tells a story. Mirrors Of Paradise is exceptionally well-designed, well-written, and contains a wealth of photographic images that do great justice to a man's work which is visually stunning, intellectually sophisticated and imaginatively pure. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Another excellent entry in the Then and Now series
I drove through Las Vegas in 1975 and was so unimpressed I didn't even stop and get out of the car. I wanted to see if this book had any photos from that era and was pleased to find out my memory wasn't faulty. I was also there in the mid '60s and the late '90s and the book didn't let me down on those memories, either.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
I was finally able to visit Las Vegas last year and bought several Vegas books as souvenirs. Unfortunately, most of the books only provided information on present-day Las Vegas. Also wanted were pictures of the Las Vegas I had seen on TV as a kid. After all, that is what gave it its magic & attraction to me.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Trip Down Memory Lane
The book is a fascinating look at Vegas in the past and present. For each subject there's the "then" and the "now".It captures the amazing evolution of defines Las Vegas. With each picture is a paragraph about the scene. It's a nice coffee table book but also a cool reference book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Destined to be a classic garden reference.
I'm a master gardener from Illinois, and have heard Tracy Disabato-Aust on a number of occasions. Her book The Well-Tended Perennial Garden has long been our bible for perennials. In this new book, she makes accessible for all gardeners the depth of her experience and research in incorporating many kinds of plants in a mixed border. The book is worth buying for the appendices alone: plants by design and maintenance characteristics as well as common/scientific name cross-references. A must-have garden reference book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
This book has a lot to offer. The first half of the book shows plant combinations - both good and bad with detailed commentary. The second half of the book has lists of plants by categories and matrixes. Very useful whenyou are trying to find a plant to fit a particular situation. Before I bought this book, I had it out from the library and kept renewing it. Decided to have a copy of my own. Now, I use it all the time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Average text -- for those who like yellow and red....
Tracy DiSabato-Aust has put a lot of herself into her complex book,THE WELL-DESIGNED GARDEN.This topic (design not Tracy) certainly needs addressing. In lieu of hiring a garden designer which most new home owners cannot afford to do, new gardeners must rely on friends as well as multiple books and articles to address garden questions. Wouldn't it be nice to find a single source that covers everything-trees, shrubs, perennial identification and planting and growing specifics, as well as design issues?I doubt this book will satisfy that need. The gardening newcomer or even somewhat seasoned gardeners will probably find this book overwhelming in its detail while remaining unhelpful in addressing specific needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly the Best Book of its Kind
I own a lot of gardening books and this is one of my all time favorites.I return to it almost every season. It's rare that a book with pretty pictures delivers on the substance and this one really does.Williams gives you a great framework for how to look at your garden, offers tons of beautiful examples and gives you lots of practical tips.Plus she realy has great taste which is unique and special as opposed to generic good taste which a lot of garden tomes support.I finally visited her garden when it was open to the public and it was even better than the book! She's extremely talented.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the garden design books
When I first moved into my new house (it was my first house) I read several books on garden design that would give me some kind of orientation about what to do with my back yard.It was a mess.Ms. William's bookstood out (and still does) as the book that was most helpful and inspiringat the same time.It is beautifully written and well organized, and takesyou through all aspects and stages of garden design, from principle toexecution. Threaded throughout the book is a philosophy of restraint that Ihave learned is so important for the garden or any other designer who aimsat the achievement of quiet beauty in his/her environment.Ms. William'sbook (accompanied with the beautiful prose of Nancy Drew, writer on gardenlife) is certainly a must have for anyone starting out in garen design, andthe photographs make the book worth having for any garden enthusiast.Iwas shocked to see that no one had given it a five star rating till now! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars practical and useful
I found this very helpful in putting up fence which I had not done before- just what I needed

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book filled with great examples
I was very impressed that this book went into so much detail about fencing. We are at the beginning stages of fencing in over 8,000 feet of fenceline and this book offered many wonderful suggestions that we had not thought of and will definately put to use now that we know better!Thank you so much for putting together such a great book for those who aren't very fence educated!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are fencing this is the book you need!
I was new to small scale farming and found that there was very little practical advice about the right way to build various fences other than learning on the job, from friends and neighbors and such. I then found thisbook and it told me everything I needed to know from how to choose theright kind of fence to how deep to drive a t-post. I now have a lot ofsturdy fences that should last a very long time. (by the way, drop by yourlocal farm store and get a copy of the Galagher fencing manual if you planon doing electric fences. Lots of good info there too). ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent introduction to stonework, but better books available
This is a decent book for the novice to overcome any initial trepidation about building drystone features. It is well illustrated, and comprehensive enough to get you started. However, with a few exceptions, the stonework illustrated is of average quality. For a true photo reference on the art of drystone, I would recommend Dan Snow's "In the Company of Stone" over Reed's book any day. Combine it with John Vivians "Building Stone Walls", and you will have everything you need to enter the world of drystone work: quality pictures of excellent stonework for reference, and solid, no nonesense text to guide you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book with detailed how-to info
This book is full of beautiful photos and ideas for stonescaping. It includes stone paths, patios, steps, retaining walls, and even how to make an impressive stone waterfall. However, it's not only the wonderful photography that makes this book great, but it also includes information about how to accomplish these things.I would have to say this is a great "how-to" book that disguises itself as a beautiful coffee table book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stonescape
A good book for anyone interested in landscaping their yard with dry stacked stones. It teaches you much more than just making retaining walls. Learn how to make paths, steps, benches, pools, and how to integrate plants into the stonework. It could have used some more photos of finished projects, but overall it should be enough to help you finish any stonescaping project you take on. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Photography and the Transformation of the Civil War
Campi's "Civil War Battlefields Then & Now" is a book of photographs in which Civil War Battlefields and sites as they appeared at the time of the conflict are contrasted with photographs of the sites today. The Civil War era photos are, of course in black-and white. The modern photographs are in color and were taken especially for this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Informative with Beautiful Images
I received this book for my birthday and couldn't be more pleased. The photos and text are extremely well done. The 144-page book is a mix of well known and rarely published Civil War photographs, printed in chronological order. The author takes pains to include images from Western battlefields (a sadly neglected part of the Civil War). The captions contain material that will interest both rookie and veteran Civil War buffs alike.Civil War Battlefields Then and Now makes a great gift!

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Idea -- not so great pictures
As the title says, this was a great idea.Unfortunately, the photographers fell down on the job in too many instances--not all, but too many.I'm very familiar with many of these places and the idea of "then & now" photography. Some of the pictures are "right on."Some are probably close enough. But unfortunately some are not even close.I give this 3 stars...if you'll never travel to these places, and you don't really care about the "exactness" of the "then & now" pairs, buy this book. But know that it's not 100% accurate. ... I am in love with this book! It is clear, concise, well-written, and has wonderful graphics. I am a landscape architecture student at UCD and this book has taught me more than any of my teachers combined! Highly recommend.

The best garden book overall. A smart book. Creative. Great pics. VERY Comprensive. Wish Id bought hardback.Complete. Very readable. Projects are suberb. Voluminous. A must for every serious gardener.

2-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring but no help implementing
I expected more for the price. There are some nice ideas and a few plans, but the plans don't contain measurements. This is not very professional and makes implementation very difficult. Nice for dreaming, but no real help planning.
