5-0 out of 5 stars The most sensual and aesthetically pleasing garden book ever
Many garden books I use for reference. The Beckoning Path is a total aesthetic experience. The photography is some of the most stunning I have ever seen, incredible compositions of form and texture and color. When Iopen the book I enter into Ted Nierenberg's forest garden: I can smell thedamp moss, hear the water coursing over rocks, feel the stillness of fallensnow. I have given away five copies of this book to gardening friends. Iwould give many more if I could find more copies, but it is now out ofprint. The garden, and the photographs of the garden, are poems written inleaves and water and bark. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Plants for Tropical Landscapes - a Gardener's Guide
Plants for Tropical Landscapes addresses everything from ground covers to Palms, Xeriscape to lanais. It contains an impressive number of plants and its simple format makes it a joy to read. The book is clearly organized by the size of the plant, starting from the smallest (ground covers) and working its way up to largest plants in a tropical garden (trees over 50'). Along with beautiful color photographs, the physical characteristics of each plant, light and moisture requirements, preferred soil, wind, drought, and salt tolerance are all given. The authors also suggest practical ways the plants could be used in a tropical setting. This book does not bog the reader down with too many details, but gives everything necessary to plant your tropical garden. ... Read more

I looked at a couple of dozen deck books and this was the only one that explained how to build a deck in a way that mycontruction-impaired mind could comprehend. Very specific, step by stepbuilding instructions, a thorough review of the planning process andwonderful ideas for extra features. 4-0 out of 5 stars Not just for Landscape Architects
Recovering Landscape: Essays in Contemporary Landscape Architecture, proposes that when landscape is considered solely as a noun, its active role in the everyday lived experiences of humankind is lost.In thislight, the volume seeks to recover landscape as not only a verb, "asprocess or activity," but also to recover the role of idea and theimaginary in landscape. To this end, Recovering Landscape is primarilydirected toward the practicing landscape architect and how he/she caninvoke this concept into his/her training, design and activities.Scholarsof applied landscape who are concerned with turning idea into artifact willundoubtedly find this volume informative in guiding their practice. At thesame time, theoretical landscape scholars who are interested inunderstanding and interpreting landscape as both cultural artifact andcultural process will also find much of interest in this volume.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fellow golf course architect makes comments.
Mike Hurdzan's Golf Greens is not an easy read straight through from cover to cover because it is highly technical. But I did it and I'm glad.It searches the subject in far greater depth of detail and pictorially than anyone has ever done before. Great coverage! And it doesn't always simply "sell the conventional line". I learned lots from it, though before thought I was already pretty well experienced in this important matter.I recommend this book to all golf course developers, contractors, maintenance superintendents and other golf course architects for learning much more about golf greens. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Put Back this Front Yard Book
I love elaborate front yard plantings, but this book just isn't the inspirational guide that Liz Primeau's similar "Front Yard Gardens: Growing More Than Grass" is.5-0 out of 5 stars Ohhhhh! Excellent!!
I can't begin to say how much I adore this book!! I'm telling you now, if you read this book from cover to cover & allow yourself to digest each & every picture, you'll never look at a front yard the same again. Literally, American is stuck in a rut. I look up & down my street, & all I see are blank, bland, boring lawns!! Wretch! This book has made me realize something that took me directly out of that silly, traditional mindset: I PAY AS MUCH FOR MY FRONT YARD AS I DO MY BACKYARD! This book has motivated me to "reclaim" my front yard for my own use, & I can't wait to have it all in & done! It won't be my neighbor's front yard anymore! It won't look like public domain anymore!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical ideas for real houses not magazine covers
A good-looking front yard isn't just a wise investment in your home, it's a gift to your neighborhood. Webber's book is packed with ideas for real families and real houses. For example, the book's chapter "Driveways and Parking" offers ideas on expanding a narrow driveway or parking spot, even parking bays and pull-offs!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Doing Good Architecture
This is a big, beautiful book portraying the works of an architect who strived not to design monuments with a signature style, but instead create wonderful places that fit their landscape. The book chronicles twenty of Turnbull's projects beginning with the Sea Ranch Condominium (with MLTW) and ending with Turnbull and his wife's own weekend retreat, Teviot Springs Vineyard. All but one of the projects (Sea Ranch Athletic Club)are residential, which reflects the nature of Turnbull's career. The book contains essays by Mary Griffen (Turnbull's wife and business partner), William Stout, Mitchell Schwarzer, and Donlyn Lyndon.Turnbull's buildings contain innate beauty, sensitivity to site, and the ability to bring common, conventional construction to a high art.Morley Baer's black and white photography is powerful and captures the wonderful subtleties in Turnbull's sometines simple and conventional structures that are truly "GOOD" architecture. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Blueprints for Welcoming Front-Yard Combinations
"The new American garden means living and walking among plants, following a path from driveway to front door among ornamental grasses and Russian sage, talking with friends under apple and cherry trees at the front of the house." ~Gordon Hayward
5-0 out of 5 stars Designing for the Front of the House
The tradition in the United States has been to have a fairly plain front yard and to put the emphasis on the back yard. If we think of the front yard at all, it's usually pretty bland. The chairs, the table, the fountain go in the back yard.
5-0 out of 5 stars A straightforward guide to creating entry gardens that refresh and enliven the spirit
Written by renowned garden expert and designer Gordon Hayward, The Welcoming Garden: Designing Your Own Front Garden is a straightforward guide to creating entry gardens that refresh and enliven the spirit. Regardless of whether one has a large or small space in which to garden, The Welcoming Garden offers practical advice for crafting walls, fences and gates; placing walkways and ornaments near the front door; pots in the garden; whether to have a lot of lawn or a little; sitting areas; and much more, always with a keen overview of general style and functionality. Lavish color photography throughout illustrates both aesthetic and horticultural principles in this "must-have" for amateur and professional gardeners alike.

2-0 out of 5 stars Landscape Plants for Dry Regions is a winner!
I own several desert landscaping and gardening books and this book is by far the best of the bunch. It is organized according to species alphabetically, which makes it easy to look up plants. It is comprehensive...I have never failed to find the specific plant, bush or tree I am researching.Plus, full color photographs of each plant make it easy to pick and choose for visual effect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for beginners
We're building a new home in Arizona and this book has served as a wonderful guide to my husband and myself in the planning of our landscaping. The photos are clear and great examples of what the plants will look like. Plants are listed alphabetically by scientific name, but there's a handy cross-reference in the back to make it easier. The most helpful tool is under each plant's description where it clearly lists possible problems and maintenance needed. One thing I wish it did include are citrus trees, but I suppose they were left out because they are not native plants (but then again, I didn't think palms were either, and they are listed).

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for choosing plants
All plants discussed have a color photo right next to the text, and the text provides all key information in specific format. This makes it easy to compare plants, or find specific information about a plant you're interested in.The book goes into detail on different varieties also, e.g. there are color pictures and text on each of several varieties of mesquite - very helpful when you're trying to choose the right one for your landscape.A very few of the photos are poor quality, but any picture here is worth a thousand words. This is the only book I have seen for this climate (I live in Phoenix) that attempts to provide this volume of information with full color photos.Definitely worth the money. ... Read more
