Beautiful, tasteful, inspirational
This book covers the use of native and other well-suited plant choices to match your local conditions and create beautiful, generally lower-maintenance, informal gardens. Beautiful photographs, tips for various cultural types (e.g., meadow gardens, shrub borders, woodland edges) and design theory, with a moderate emphasis on the temperate conditions one might find in England or New England. This book has no section arranged by species, but that's no loss for most garden readers, and Hobhouse shows a detailed knowledge of plants and gives plenty of tips on their specific use within the culturally arranged sections. (Hobhouse has a large number of books in print and out; all that I have read have been worth purchasing.)
Wonderfully informative
I've long been an admirer of Rosemary Hobhouse's garden design skills, but she displays here that she isn't only a writer who designs gardens, she is also an excellent plantswoman, and her gardens reflect an intimate knowledge and practical experience with all kinds of plants.This book is wonderfully informative on the history of using 'natural' plants in garden design, and I especially liked the way she uses various examples of real gardens of very different kinds.Whatever kind of garden you are interested in, there's bound to be something inspirational in this beautiful book. ... tiniest book I've ever purchased!!
When this book arrived after ordering it from Amazon (and being fooled by other reviews), my husband and I couldn't stop laughing--this is not an encyclopedia but a pocket sized dictionary (literally 2inches squared), with entries such as "ants"--the descriptions of anything are way too short to be of any merit, and if you really need to look up the definition of "ant" you are going to need a lot more help in your garden than this book can supply!!
NOT NEW...BUT TRIED AND TRUE!
This book has been around for many years and is one of the most valuable resources on organic gardening.True, it does not have beautiful glossy coloured pictures to capture one's attention, and you likely will not find it sitting around on someone's coffee table ready to stimulate conversation.However, what the book does offer is a wealth of information covering organic garden techniques, vegetable growing, organic fertilizers, fruit orchards, fruit and nut culture, herb gardening(my favourite section) and exotic tropical fruits (certainly not conducive to all climates, such as mine, if you are an outdoor gardener.)This is not a book the average person will sit down and read, cover to cover, in an evening - the length is over one thousand pages!However, if you are into organic gardening this is a must-have book.I particularly like the way the book is organized; considering the size of this monsterous volume, everything was easy to find. You are definitely getting a terrific value for your dollar, considering this is probably the only book you will ever need in respect to organic gardening.

Great information
I am in our state Master Gardener program, and the advice is to go organic. You can read contradictory advice out there on the best way to grow crops, flowers, healthy lawns and trees. So far this is the book I've found that clears up the contradictions I've heard and read about and tells you why.
The only way to grow!
This book is extremely informative, both for the beginning gardener as well as the more experienced.Contains basic planting techniques, how to begin gardening the organic way, (not as daunting or expensive as you might think!) and maintaining your new masterpiece.Disease and pest control, (MANY bugs are beneficial!!) building healthy soil, (which in turns builds healthy plants,) soil and water management, etc.Written in clear, easy-to-understand language, this is the first book I would recommend to anyone with an interest in gardening, or someone looking for a better, safer way to care for their corner of the planet.If you have children or pets, and a yard, this book is for you!If you enjoy spending time outside relishing your greenspace, this book is for you! ... Love gardening
Heirloom Country Gardens is a great holiday find or for anytime of the year. There are many good ideas for food for thought while sitting around the old cookstove during this frigid winter!

Great for teenaged kids.....
Once upon a time I worked as a docent at Guston Hall (home of the Revolutionary George Mason who who wrote the Fairfax Resolves which became the Virginia and then the U.S. Bill of Rights). This is what I should have started with!

Regional notes for a national audience
It is a tricky thing to adapt columns written with a particular region in mind into a book with a national audience -- a special trick, perhaps, when a kind of gardening calendar is retained to organize the text. Henry Homeyer's practical "reflections and observations" may seem most germane to gardeners in New England, but if you know enough to place his experience in your own climate, you will find plenty to interest you. Excellent introduction to why you should consider organic living
I became interested in organic living when my husband was diagnosed with kidney cancer.Once I was told that this cancer was most probably the result of exposure to some toxin, organic living became the goal at our house.I have been collecting books on organic living ever since.This is one of the first books that I found.This book focuses on helping the readers to make smart and safe choices in every aspect of everyday life. The topics are food, health, beauty products, clothing and home design and decoration.
