Inspiring meditation on food and life.
Facinating book describes the author's discovery of heirloom seeds and traditional farming methods.Though the book is about starting a heirloom seed company it is really about food, farming, health, philosophy, big business, bio diversity, environment, nature, history, community, and what makes life worthwhile.
This book can change your life
I literally stumbled upon this book while "trapped" by a snowstorm.I'm a Master Gardener and I've purchased heirloom seeds from this company many times.I thought the book was going to be about how the company grew, and it is, but it is much more!In the discussions about loss of biodiversity and the dominance of mass production agriculture, I felt like I was being presented with a call to action.I'd considered vegetarianism off and on for some time (for nutritional reasons) and this book gave me the impetus to finally follow through.The information is presented in a straightforward manner, without inflammatory prose, and the authors have created an inspiring and motivational book that I've found to be quite empowering. ... Bought Last book, this one is getting better and better.
I am actually enjoying an ant free summer thanks to this book! All without any chemicals using Dr bronners Peppermint soap! wow!

Information is there but it is not a easy read.
This book has some great ideas but I think the book could be organized a little better. I think I will use some of the information in my satsuma citrus farm!

It was OK but not great
The pictures in this book are beautiful but this should have been an educational experience and it just wasn't.I agree with the other reviewer that so much of the book was about logistics that it would have been wonderful to have a map or clear pictures of the property so we would be able to tell what the author was talking about.The other issue I had was how oddly these farmers seemed to deal with animal deaths.For example she slits a sheep's throat during a difficult labor and says she regrets not doing it earlier that day because of the "look" the sheep gave her but didn't because she was in her work clothes.I cannot imagine being pyschic enough to know an animal should be put down based on a look.In addition, they lose approximately half their calves because of the simple fact that they aren't cleaning the enclosed barn stalls during the winter.First of all, why are the cattle in the barn?Secondly, any farmer knows you must muck out stalls for health reasons *especially* if you have calves and you've enclosed them in the barn.It's NOT common practice to do this, at least where I come from and we get temps below zero with serious wind chill factors.The chicken predator was unsettling for me as well.If something's getting my chickens and I really need that income to survive for the year, you can bet all holes will be blocked, the chicks will be moved, anything and everything will be done to stop the killing.

Not worth the money, very little useful information.
This is supposed to be a feely book and not a textbook.That said, the brushstrokes are far too broad to even provide that feel for the farm.Too anecdotal, and difficult to piece together.Flashbacks are one thing, but only if they provide literary value.Here, straying from chronological order subtracts from an already shaky narrative.And the writing style itself is poor.Did the publisher even assign an editor?

Dead Daisies Make Me Crazy
Lorren Nancarrow is a San Diego TV weatherman. He has a passion for gardening. His book is extremly useful and informative for people that want to avoid pesticides and has wonderful alternatives. The book covers many tips and recepies forsolutions that save money rather than using commercial products. It covers soil prep and suggestions for planting all the way to growing and pruning. Anyone that is interested in gardening needs this book in their library.

Down to the earth gardener
This book was a very sweet description of life at a organic farm.It brought to life ideas and processes that must happen every year or helpful hints on what makes this gardening adventure easier.You can feel the joy and effort he has put into the farm and also the challenges.He gives a glimpse of the organic association, and what it means to be organic.Chaskey generously lets us learn from his mistakes.The wholesome roots of farming are embraced by this book, I loved it.

Save your money
This book provides nice reviews of life cycles of various pests and beneficial speicies, but very little practical, useful information for controlling most of the pests.Very superficial work.

Garden companion
This is probably the most handy garden book in my collection for quick reference for a variety of maladies. Although it is small in size it is big on help. The author is a local weatherman in San Diego and many of the garden tidbits included on his televison weather segment are in this book. If you want to know to rid your garden of pests in a "humane" way than this book is for you. The recipes are more onthe organic natural method as opposed to insecticides. There are plenty of old recipres for geting rid of those unwanted visitors to your garden. The book also provides good information on the beneficial visitors including some of the lesser known variaties. For example, recently I was being "bugged" by these hovering flies that mimic the flying motion of helicoptersandI was trying to think of a way to rid my garden of them. After checking this book again Ifound out they are Syrphid Fliesand actuallyare great pollinators and beneficial for controling aphids. Besides telling you o f the purpose of the insects or critters there are also mini history lessons on the origins of the visitors to your garden.Like this little tidbit of garden facts there are countless other informative ideas to help you have a better garden. Recommended for garden hobbyists who like to read in the garden after putting in some labor.

Great book
This book has tons of info on composting.I personally was interested in vermicomposting (great for people who live in apartments or rentals) and this book gave me a lot of good information to start my compost bin.

Fairly Comprehensive "How To" Guidebook
Riveting.I really didn't know how it was going to end.Was the internal temperature of the heap high enough to kill the pathogens yet let the aerobic decomposers work?Was the carbon to nitrogen ratio correct?Was the worm population going to survive or was there to be another mass die off?Wow.A real page turner.
