5-0 out of 5 stars Maritime Northwest Garden Guide
As a newcomer to the Northwest, I was delighted and relieved to find the Maritime Northwest Garden Guide. It is a planting calendar for year-round organic gardening and so much more. Growing in this climate is so vastlydifferent from my experiences in the Midwest that sometimes I felt like acomplete novice.Month-by-month, the Garden Guide provides a nearlyexhaustive list on which seeds are appropriate to sow indoors, sowoutdoors, and sow under cloches. Following their suggestions yieldsyear-round produce. It's full of great reminders that January is the timeto start planning your crop rotation, February is the time to have yoursoil tested, March is the month to begin the soil amendments and April isthe time to begin hardening off. What? you don't know what "hardening off"means? You really need to buy this book! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good and concise
A great book in an easy to read format, good for quick reference and deeper study. Great pictures and info on locating local specimens to see how the plants look in a real setting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Guide for Plants in the DFW area and similar climates!
Impressive! This is the most comprehensive and informative plant guides for this part of Texas and anywhere else with a similar climate. The categories include: "Trees", "Shrubs", "Flowers", and "Groundcovers, Vines and Grasses". Many photos! The category "Trees" alone has over 150 photos! Soils vary quite a bit here, so this includes a lot of plants! It even names the plants and trees you DO NOT want to plant and gives the reasons why. The book illustrates theproper way to plant and has fantastic recommendations on how to manage various problems with pests, "weeds", etc. Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Pictures

4-0 out of 5 stars For master gardeners and farmers, but also good for basics
This is truly a good book. It is short, simply written, and very informative. However, it is a little technical for the average Gardner. I personally picked-up this book to gain general knowledge about soil, and I found everything I asked for and more. Nevertheless, there were things that I felt were not explained enough, but that's not the fault of the author because I am neither a master gardner nor a farmer. In the begging of the book it almost seemed like the author was one of the environmentalist extremists, however as I continued reading I found the author to be a responsible writer with no extremism. As a matter of fact, on several occasions the author offered advise to non-organic farmers. Overall, a great book and coming from my non-farmer background I would give it 4 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars --Not just pretty pictures of plants--
I collect books on growing herbs and without exception they are all useful. Some books are personalized and others give general and basic information. This is probably one of the very best"all round" books that I've ever seen.4-0 out of 5 stars A very good herb gardening book, better for large spaces...
+AH4-More of a 3.5, but I'll round up :-) This is one of the first herb gardening books I got.Because I am not gardening in a large space, like a raised bed or half my backyard, many of the directions and much of the information was sort of overwhelming, at least for right now.I do mostlycontainer herb gardening and in flower boxes and barrels, so there wasn'tmuch info specifically geared for these types in this book, but cut downthe organic gardening, soil preperation, pest control,+AH4-+AH4- sowing, watering, and composting info into small-scale size and it's great. This book is in the Taylor's Weekend Gardening Guides series of books.Like most books in this series, it is easy to read and understand. While ittouches upon some of the science behind why good soil is important, itdoesn't bore the average gardener with laborious explanations. It quicklygets to what most gardeners want to know, that is what to do to improveyour soil's quality and have healthier plants.Read more

I was disappointed in this book because there are very few photos or illustrations, and those that appear are not in color. Also, I assumed the book was solely about floral gardens (because of the lovely cover) but it actually covers lawn care, fruit trees, vegetable and indoor gardens, etc.;not that much is devoted to flowering annuals/perennials.(My fault:I should have previewed the table of contents). The section on insect control is probably the best part of the book.Although other readers might be very pleased with the book and all the general info it contains,I would not have purchased this book if I had seen it beforehand. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Getting the most from the status quo
You're there. You have the family, the house, the yard, the car, the job that requires a commute.Given the way that a lot of us live, it can be very useful to have a check-list -- to do a walk-around of home and garden and see the latest thinking on how to minimize our impact on the environment. As someone who has been following these issues for years, I found it interesting that the evidence on some things seems to argue for different choices -- and that I had been way off on my thinking in other specifics. It's a pleasurable read -- theretro photos remind me that the suburbanization of America was rooted in a more innocent time, when few people had the foresight to see its results. What is beyond the scope of the book, but the more important question, is how we get to the point where we are creating not 20% less damage but 50% or even no damage at all -- and those are the "tough questions" that this book just does not ask.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction, but not much more, and only if you have $
This thin book is packed with information for someone new to "living lightly in the world." Broken out by living area -- bedrooms, bathrooms, laundry room, yards, etc. -- the book suggests alternative products and approaches to everyday living. Schultz takes on questions like "Should I Fertilize My Lawn?", "Cloth or Disposable Diapers?", and "Plastic or Paper Shopping Bags?" His writing is clear, concise, and his explanations easy to understand. He also includes a number of "recipes" for cleaning using vinegar, baking soda, and/or hydrogen peroxide, as well as a useful -- if brief -- list of sources.5-0 out of 5 stars The book title says it all.
This is a terrific book describing simple and manageable methods for improving the suburban family's opportunity to replace environmentally harmful chemical products with safer ones.It includes advice for gardening, washing anything and everything, home maintenance, repairs and shopping,It is extremely easy to read, very well laid out in an appealing format, friendly, concise, and doesn't preach or scold. This book is a wonderful tool for starting or maintaining an environmentally ethical suburban lifestyle without making you feel like a green-earth criminal. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars promising title
Upon seeing the title of this book, I automatically picked it up and bought it. Being a chemical free gardener in the midst of a drought, I ran home elated at my good fortune in finding the very book I was hoping for. I have to say that my heart sank when I realized this was not a book exclusively about lawns(that space in the landscape used for family play, visual respite and contrast, and in design, for "negative space"), and how to manage them through use of different grasses and ground covers, and xeriscaping etc. This book has some good information in it and I would recommend it to the homeowner wanting some good tips for their garden. I myself learned a new thing or maybe two. It is in no way the comprehensive treatise on the subject its enticing title suggests. I would recommend any of the Rodale books out there first, but feel that there can never be too many books dedicated to the promotion of Gardening in an environmentally responsible fashion, And this a fine addition to someone building their collection . Finally it has to be said that the gardens featured in this book are not beautifully designed master pieces, a pity really. ... Read more
