Very informative, easy to read and understand.
This book is filled with beautiful full color photographs of complete gardens and individual plants.It is divided into six chapters:1 - The Shady Environment (which allows you to determine what category your garden spot is in) 2 - Types of Shade Gardens (i.e along a wall, a fence, a rock garden, etc - all types well covered) 3 - Elements of Design (Putting the different plants together perfectly taking into account plant types, colors, size, needs, etc. 4 - Plants for Shade Gardens (this is what I needed - pictures of the plants and a complete description of their requirements) 5 - Starting the Garden (preparing the land, the plants, etc) 6 - Maintaining the Gardening (keeping up what you just spent so much time making) And (7) is the index.This book would be a TEN, if the author could guarantee that my Garden will look like the pictures in the book (someday). ... Jam-packed for the price!
I came across this little gem at a recent Master Gardener symposium and immediately grabbed several copies to share with others. It is wonderfully laid out by season of bloom, includes cultural information and stunningphotographs of each plant in enough detail that you get an instant sense ofthe leaf texture and mature form of each plant. It's like a trip to yourfavorite garden center at the peak of each season. For those who are new togardening it offers some excellent choices appropriate to site and forthose designing it gives you that "ah ha" of finding exactly whatyou've been looking for in that troublesome spot! There are a lot ofchoices on the subject of shade gardening but I would certainly recommendyou start with this comprehensive little book. It is a great value for theprice. Ken Druse has a similar small book but it lacks the seasonal elementof this one and repeats much of the information and photographs from hisWONDERFUL larger volume, The Natural Shade Garden. ... An otherwise great little book (anything by Ken Druse is worth reading) is made frustrating by the lack of an index. Very frustrating in fact--although there is a general table of contents in the front, you can't look up anything specific or even be sure it is covered. Too bad!

Hosta's in your garden
Excelent book for the average gardener. This book concentrates on using Hosta's in the garden with other plants. Gives lots of suggestions in choosing color and texture to add interest and accent other plants as well as showing hosta's to their fullest potential. Also covers how hosta's grow, dividing, planting and hosta care disease and prevention. Wonderful color photo's.

Pleasurable reading
It was a pleasure to read this book and worthwhile. However I am a person looking for more of a book that doesn't put it all on the line. She states in the book on pg. 27 that she does not like to write about pest and diseases however she does imparts some useful information for the novice hosta grower, but not nearly enough for an enthusiast. GREAT IDEA BOOK FOR SHADE!
A GARDEN IN THE SHADE by Harriet Cramer is great introductory resource to gardening in the shade. The gardener, struggling with what to do with all their shady spaces, especially the larger gardens or one with GROWING SHADEY SPACES will enjoy this collection. Nice introduction to the subject....
With hundreds of books on the market, how can one choose which one will prove most informative about gardening in the shade?For my money, George Schenk's THE COMPLETE SHADE GARDENER is the best buy, but Shenk's book has mostly black and white photos with a few colorful photographs. Nice introduction to the subject....

You need this if you have shade -- and who doesn't?
This book gives you great ideas on what to plant and excellent examples of various shade landscaping ideas. Shade gardening is a bit more challenging because there are simply much fewer varieties of common nursery plants, less choice of color, etc. This books certainly goes a long way in helping the shade gardener in making the right decisions.

This is a great book!
If you are one of the millions of people who live in the leafy older suburbs of the Northeast, this is the book for you. It's a really practical guide to gardening in the shade, with serious advice on the problems we face here. Need advice on what shade plants are unappealing to deer? Judy Glattstein has great suggestions. How about plants that will survive in the dry shade under maples? She knows that too. She recommends lots of plants that will thrive here and will look beautiful too. I've been following her advice for a couple of years now with great results. A Practical Book
If you are looking for a practical book on shade gardening, especially if you have deer, I highly recommend Made for the Shade, by Judy Glattstein. This book will collect dust on my book shelf
It is comprehensive in it's text but there were not enough pictures to suit my taste. The text was not arranged in a fashion that makes it an easier reference. It would be helpful if there where cross referencesonsubjects such as soil. It is a pretty book and I'll keep it but I'll keeplooking for a book with photos of all the plants discussed and stat tableson each plant for easy reference on zones, soil,etc.. ... Read more
