5-0 out of 5 stars The gardening life...
Allen Lacy has been writing about gardening for a number of years in books, newspaper columns and letters to friends. I've purchased mostly paperback copies, but bought this one in hardcover because I kept theothers and wish now I had bought hardcover versions. I reread them fromtime to time, and lend them to really good friends who will return them.Lacy gardens in New Jersey in Zone 7 so I find his writing helpful since Ilive in the same climate. He was a philosophy professor for a number ofyears, and his writing is reflective. This book is filled with practicalwisdom.Think of your old uncle Horace who can get anything to growsharing some of advice. Lacy's books fall some where between an essay on"How gardening changed my life" and "Why your Bee Balm gotMildew."Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good beginner's book...
In this BBG monograph, garden designer Colston Burrell reveals methods for transforming your small city plot baking in sunlight into a stunning garden bed using perennials. These BBG guides are an inexpensive and safe way to begin learning about gardening in urban and suburban areas, and perhaps because the source is located in a large metropolitan area (New York). Furthermore, most if not all of the plant material (he does include a list of shrubs for sunny dry plances) listed can be found in city nurseries and garden shops, and most if not allwill not disappoint the new gardener.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for a beginner
I bought 5 shade gardening books at once, and this is the one that I like the best. It is very easy to read, informative, and has a good balance between text & pictures. There is much good advice for the novice gardener in this book. Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introductory book
I recently got five shade gardening books in one "go" and this is the one I like the best. It is very practical with advice for the "klutzy" or novice gardener. My one complaint is not enough pictures of the plants described - but get a picture guide (like the Taylor's guide) as a complementary book and you'll be all set. It also has a mail-order nursery guide in the back, so you can GET all the plants described. I'm very satisfied with this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very well thought out book for shade gardening
I have used this book extensively to decided on which plants I want to plant in certain areas. It is not perfectly suited to Qubec, as the truly hardy selections are not always included, but very useful in any case ... Read more
