5-0 out of 5 stars Sounds Simple, And It Is, Once you have it explained
Most of us, in the United States at least, grew up where the supply of water was so simple. Your house was automatically connected to the city water mains when it was built and for a few dollars a month all the water you needed was supplied at the turn of a tap.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most complete and detailed book for creating Ponds and Streams
Good book. Pictures are good and the descriptions and details from the creation of Ponds, Streams and Waterfalls is the most complete of all the books that I have purchased or read. It could do a little better job of describing how to integrate a Bog Garden with a Pond. I still have questions about that.

3-0 out of 5 stars There are better choices
In my opinion, this book is a very superficial overview of pond construction.A far better choice is "Ortho's All About Building Waterfalls, Ponds, and Streams", for the same price [or slightly cheaper]."Ortho's" covers the topic much more thoroughly than this "complete guide".

5-0 out of 5 stars Good fundamentals.
Excellent fundamental instructions for ponds and waterfalls. If you are doing a stream also, you might want to consult another title or two on the same subject. You will also need some more education on plants for your pond. But for basic pond and waterfall, this is the best I have read.
1-0 out of 5 stars Only pictures
If you are a beginer in pond building and you need everything explained to details, do not buy this book. I bought it and it's just not good. You can read it under a hour and you'll see only pictures with nothing on them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Provides color photos & directions for a range of fountains
Paris Mannion's Create Your Own Tabletop Fountains (1-58180-103-3, $24.99) provides a fine guide to creating the fountains which have become so popular in hardware and houseware stores. From supplies and materials to crafting 15 selected fountains using shells to pots, this provides color photos and directions for a range of fountains.

5-0 out of 5 stars Create Your Own Tabletop Fountain
Wow! Lots of great info and imaginative projects in gorgeous color layout. The feng shui cures, tips on hiding the cord, and how to drill slate were particularly helpful to me. I got a noisy pump, and this book tells ways to make it operate quietly! It answered all my questions on fountain plants, how to turn the fountain off and on without getting under the couch, where to get decorating accents, and how to water seal and patch clay pots.5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome fountains!
Icompared several fountain making books, and found this one to have the most complete information and the best instructions. The step by step photos are better than the drawn diagrams found in other books, because they tell the exact sequence of events in building a tabletop fountain. I also found this book to have the most useable projects ( I was not interested in outdoor fountains and the plumbing challenges inherent in making them). I have already made 3 awesome fountains, the most ambitious being the copper leaf fountain, which sounds like music and drowns out the noise of traffic that I used to hear in my living room. I had no trouble putting it together following the photos and directions. When it splashed too much, I found the remedy in the book, too. The author's lists are amusing and informative (example: 10 ways to hide the cord, how to quiet noisy pumps, and 10 ways to know you need "fountains anonymous") .The book describes a fountain as an "oasis connecting you to nature." That pretty much sums up my feeling when I go home after a busy day and hear throughout my house the endless sound of falling water.Because the projects vary in difficulty,I would highly recommend this book, no matter how much fountain building experience you've had. ... Editorial Review

Few elements are as ubiquitous or as essential as water, or as appealing for the soothing sights and sounds with which it enhances our environment. Fountains are the ideal way to incorporate water's magic into our homes and gardens, and the fountain maker becomes something of an illusionist, striving emulate nature and to conceal the mechanics that make the perpetual flow of water possible.Read more

A truely awesome book.I came upon it when I looked through Angel Lee's review list and ordered it.I am indebted to her!I have been making my own fountains since I bought my 1st home 6 years ago, and wanted new ideas. These are wonderful. Some of the simpler dish-type gardens will makelovely Christmas gifts, and I look forward to starting them. For themore adventurous, there aremore complex and larger fountains/ponds, alltruely picturesque, which would be great fun for anyone with a reasonablesized yard.A friend has created one on his terraced front lawn, and itcaptures the attention of by passers, making his neighborhood The Place tovisit of late. For the truely enthused, there are directions forcasting subjects in ceramics, for designing cement fountains or basins, andeven for making masks of living persons.Although many items can becollected from the "saved" materials everyone seems to store awayin garages or from yard and garage sales, those like pumps, tubing, andother hardware items can be found at nurseries and hardward stores. Thereis also a very useful list of addresses where other types of supplies maybe found. I can hardly wait to get started! Thanks again Angel.

Editorial Review

Fountains have become increasingly popular home-decor accents, but they can be somewhat pricey. Fortunately, many types are not very difficult to build, and can be made with lots of found materials and garden-center water pumps. Dawn Cusick's directions are good and her ideas relatively easy to duplicate. Her most successful designs are those that direct water to mimic nature by trickling over rocks and shells, or to flow through water-resistant items like brass vases, ceramic faces, or terra-cotta pots. Less successful are those that try to be too clever, such as the gift package fountain, whereby the water pouring over a stack of gift-wrapped boxes inspires nothing so much as the urge to grab a sponge to mop up the spill, or the office desk fountain, in which water cascades down a ladder of CDs set inside an empty computer monitor. And the lack of a source list may prove a hindrance to some, though most of the more specialized materials are readily available at home centers and garden-supply stores. Dorcas Adkins's Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Many pretty pictures and neat ideas, but not enough info
This book is well illustrated and is a great "idea book" for people who want to see the many types of container water garden possibilities. There are also several useful tips that make the book worthwhile. Contents are: 1. Basics, 2. Tub gardens, 3. Dish and indoor gardens, 4. Hanging baskets, 5. Planters & window boxes, 6. Creative containers, 7. Patio ponds, 8. Fountains, statuary & wall containers, 9. Paludariums (semi-aquatic glass tank gardens that can house plants & pets), 10. Lotus, 11. Carnivorous plants. Who knew there were so many types of water container gardens? Several chapters have step-by-step pictures for setting up the containers and placing fixtures and plants.3-0 out of 5 stars Nice but no detail.
This book illustrates nice ideas but falls short in details. Very basic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another plus for container gardening
I have a smaller suburban yard and every corner is utilized.Though envious of a friend with an in-ground pond and waterfall, I did not want to dig up exsisting shrubs and perennials to satisfy my yen for water.SinceI already grow vegetables, herbs, ornamental grasses and perennials incontainers, I thought why not a water garden. This book showed me what Icould do with one of my empty oak barrels.I had a lovely mini pond withrunning water.I added 3 fish, water plants, and bought some toad tadpolesfrom a nearby garden centre.I liked it so much I'm going to do somesmaller containers as well as a couple of glazed pots with water lilys. The only thing is to overwinter water plants you need a small indooraquarium with grow lights, or a helpful friend with a pond.Enjoy andexperiment! P.S. Although the toads might not be able to breed in my yard, for the rest of the summer the little toadlets were happily hopping aroundin my yard eating bugs. ... Read more

If you tend to wake up in the middle of the night to worry, this book will soothe your mind. Donald Hall writes beautifully about his life in New Hampshire in a house and a town he clearly loves. He will remind you ofbeauties in your own life -the sound of a snow plow clearing the roads atnight, remembering your grandparents' house, gazing at a pond with mistrising from it. This may sound like the book is too sentimental - butactually it is just peaceful. The woodcut illustrations are also a pleasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lively account of the pond from early to modern times
Some 700,000 people visit Walden Pond annually and others journey to Walden mentally in contemplating of the region Henry David Thoreau made famous. It's surprising, therefore, to note that this is the first history of Walden Pond to appear in over 150 years, providing a lively account of the pond from early to modern times. W. Barksdale Maynard teaches architectural history at Johns Hopkins University and one might anticipate from this a dry perspective: not so. Walden Pond captures the social, political and conservation issues revolving around Waden over the decades.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating history of Walden Pond
For years to come, historians and literary scholars will know this book as the definitive history of Walden Pond. But it's also a delightful read.Combining impeccable scholarship with skillful writing, Maynard brings Walden Pond's storied history to life, from Thoreau's first visit as a little boy to today's preservation battles."Walden Pond: A History" is a brilliant book.

5-0 out of 5 stars AN AMAZING BOOK
Walden Pond:A History has received positive reviews during its first month of release.Kirkus gave it a coveted ?star.?Also, the ecologist Ed Schofield has written the following five-star review on a national bookstore website: ?AN AMAZING BOOK.I know a good deal about Walden Pond and Walden Woods as a result of many years of personal research.I never thought that anyone would be able to bring together, between the covers of one book, the astonishing amount of information Barksdale Maynard has compiled and integrated in this scrupulously researched and well written book.He has brought together facts from all sorts of sources: newspapers and magazines, books, unpublished letters and diaries, eyewitness interviews, videos, radio broadcasts, maps, and so forth. There are fifty pages of endnotes and bibliography - over 500 of each.I am in awe at what he has been able to do. (Wish I could have done it!)Anyone interested in historic preservation, nature conservation, human nature, grassroots activism, literature, or (most important) Thoreau and Walden itself will enjoy this book.It has lots of information, yet it reads easily and has a good ?story line?: how and why Walden has become the symbol it is and what people have done to protect it.The hero of heroes is Don Henley of The Eagles. There are lots of other people - heroes, villains, oddballs, famous people (Emerson, the Alcotts, John Muir, Walt Whitman, the Kennedys, the Clintons, and many others).I recommend the book highly.? ...
