5-0 out of 5 stars Well written and easy to understand
Rod does a great job of explaining everything.I've learned so much about construction techniques, electrical stuff, hvac, isolation, room treatment... heck just about everything you need to know to build your own studio. If you are thinking of building your own recording space:Get This Book.It will save you lots of headaches and probably a bit of money too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful and easy to understand
A great book for the home recording enthusiast.Clear, concise explanations of why to build in cerstain ways, backed up by studies and data, yet in a very easy to understand language.Different building techniques are rated in terms of sound isolation and cost, and simple plans are included.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Holds all the technical specs you need
Rod Gervais' Home Recording Studio: Build It Like The Pros goes beyond the usual focus of recording gear to cover setting up a room sound which lends to high-quality production. And this doesn't come from a musician, but from a construction engineer whose background in recording and movie studio construction plus his musician experience lends well to an authoritative discussion. From basic room design and setup to codes, permits and more, Home Recording Studio: Build It Like The Pros holds all the technical specs you need. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Codes are Fun!
Could studying building codes actually be fun?Much to my surprise, when you combine this book with the companion study guide workbook it is.The author presents the information on the codes clearly and in logical order.I am studying for my NCIDQ exam and was really nervous about the "codes questions" until I got this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Codes Guidebook for Interiors- professional peer review
I own each of the 3 editions of this book, and have found the information to be a well source of sound, practical advise concerning the application of codes as they relate to interior projects. I am an Interior Designer and I refer to my copy of Codes Guidebook for Interiors regularly for projects I am involved in. This book and the companion study guide are part of the recommended resources for studying and preparing for the NCIDQ examination. I believe this book should be a part of every commercial practitioners library, whether they be an architect or interior designer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
This book is amazing. I'm new to green building and reading this book gave me so much information on so many different things. I want to find other books like this!

4-0 out of 5 stars A+ Informative jumping off point for people interested in environmental and social responsibility.
I didn't read it cover to cover but it was not the type of book to be read like that. All in all I'd say it does a good job covering what is a pretty broad topic; there are so many "green" strategies out there and it is hard to discuss them all.I thought it did a good job on the three or so different main categories and it connected them back to the common denominator.Save, protect, and preserve natural resources. It covers site and land usage, energy and water conservation, and interior and exterior material usage. The author took the difficult path of trying to sell `green' building as potentially cost effective, whereas in reality I think it is important to realize that capital costs will definitely be higher and it is hard to predict/confirm short term viable pay-backs.Once you put a value on your conscience and the long term big picture it makes obvious sense, reasonable pay-backs are definitely attainable but they come from diligent work and coordinated evaluation and integration.
5-0 out of 5 stars A WEALTH OF INSPIRATION AND INFORMATION
IT'S GREAT TO HAVE A WEALTH OF INFORMATION ON GREEN BUILDING

Editorial Review

"Voluntary simplicity" has become a catch phrase for what seems to be a yearning for a simpler, more self-sufficient and economical way of living in the late 20th century. This book, first published in 1981 and recently updated, was probably many folks' first in-depth exposure to the idea of a simpler life, making things by hand, and enjoying a stronger sense of control over personal budgets, home projects, and lifestyles. Hundreds of projects are listed, illustrated in step-by-step diagrams and instructions: growing and preserving your own food, converting trees to lumber and building a home from it, traditional crafts and homesteading skills, and having fun with recreational activities like camping, fishing, and folk dancing without spending a lot of money. This book will have you dreaming and planning from the first page! Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great book
I have owned this book for 18 yrs and am buying another copy because I wore the 1st one out.It covers Just about everything a tinkering homeowner could want.It has a great amount of info useful to the homesteader or anyone interested in the way things used to be done.I have used it for raising chickens, grapes, gardening and making maple syrup.I also like the firewood section.I would reccomend this book to anyone who likes to tinker.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book ever for diagrams and pictures
I loved this book.I'd previously read many homesteading style books and had only been happy with one of them (Carla Emery's Encyclopedia of Country Living). This book is different in it's own special way.I didn't have as much printed information but the diagrams and pictures were just what we needed to get a few things started that the encyclopedia missed.

5-0 out of 5 stars I fixed my toilet!
While I'm a little terrified of major repairs, this book is great for the kind of things that are too small to deal with theexpense of calling a plumber but too big to just leave it alone.Good instructions, fun to read.Make sure you have all the tools before you start! I read over the instructions, wrote down what I needed, went to the hardware store and stopped by own damn toilet from running.

2-0 out of 5 stars prefer reader's digest book
I didn't find that there was enough basic information in this book to be useful to me.I think the author is trying to make money off of the "concept" rather than provide lots of informative information. And I admit, I was lured into the "concept" and bought the book, with much disapointment.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Empowering Book
I bought this book for my Mom for Christmas last year. She was on her own for the first time in her life. When I visited her this Christmas, she was complaining about her toilet running. I said, "Mom, get the book" She got the book out, I read the instructions out loud to her, and she fixed her OWN toilet. She was so proud of herself. Everyone that called on Christmas got the blow by blow account of how she fixed her own toilet. Buy this book. You will learn how to fix alot of those annoying household problems. Save money, and get a feeling of accomplishment. Buy it for your Mom, Dad, everyone. Highly recommended! ... Read more

~ This author has given his 100%, when he wrote this book. It is a gift to all Civil Engineers who is working in construction materials engineering/testing and/or Geotechnical Engineering. People taking PE, must have it.
5-0 out of 5 stars All you need for Geotechnical Review
This book covers huge amount of subjects and all in great detail. Author has emphasized NCEES topics like deep and shallow foundations, pavement design, retaining walls, soil settlement and earthwork engineering. There is a blend of technical clarity and engineering practice hints that makes this book a keeper reference after the P.E. exam. Another plus is that it has not been rushed to market and has a systematic and uniform way of arriving at answers.

This is the best book which I have seen in the market, which has covered all the TOPICS for PE-CIVIL EXAM, AND GEOTECHNICAL AFTERNOON EXAM.

5-0 out of 5 stars The author is passionate about old houses....but:)
I am so glad I read the book after I bought my turn of the century farmhouse. If I read the book before I started renovating the foundation, roof and everything in between I think I would have been scared away. It's a must read book and if you are as passionate about renovating an old house as the author and myself...lol...read the book and go ahead and buy the house!:)

5-0 out of 5 stars So you bought an old home?
We purchased this book while living in Watkins Glen, NY. Most of the homes in the area were close to 100 yrs old. That being said, this book turned out to the be the definitive resource we turned to for *anything* house related. The author comes across as being the house expert equivalent of Tom and Ray on CarTalk.Although you can run to it when your ready for a project, I suggest actually reading it.If your serious about owning and maintaining an older house, I promise you will continue to go for this book long after your subscription of "This Old House" has expired...

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute Must-Have for any Homeowner!
Not ony does George Nash "know his stuff" regarding construction and the business of restoration, he can actually write!I think this book would be a terrific manual for any homeowner because he explains how things... mechanical and structural... are put together, how they are supposed to work, when you need to repair or replace now and what can wait, what to expect. It is a wealth of information.Normally, I skip around these types of books looking for whatever pertains to the project I'm working on. I started this book at the beginning and am slowly working my way through.Well worth the purchase price. This book is well illustrated with photos and drawings, easy to read but not at all simple in nature.Love it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Construction kevlar
I have been a builder for over thirty years. During that time we learned how to master the quality aspects, scheduling, accounting, different volume levels and all the other things that can be thrown at a home builder. I have been able to provide a decent living for myself and a number of employees, however if I had known what I learned from this book and his newsletters I would be retired in Tahiti by now. Learning how to build is the easy part, learning how to make money is the hard part.

4-0 out of 5 stars Looking Inside Out
The overall strength of this work is the reminder to architects to look outside their field for inspiration, investigation, and implementation. Process is approached as beyond just "design process" to physical fabrication methodologies in various industries and the architectural conclusions are drawn from a comparative perspective.
2-0 out of 5 stars Uneasy Transposition
In this book, the authors compared the present construction process of buildings to that of the automobile, ship building and aerospace industry. This is not new (remember Towards a New Architecture?). While Corb's book talked about end products, this talks about processes. Indeed, the authors presented some impressive research evidence on how the building construction industry can learn from these neighbors by sharing many common features of process and final product between industries. 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding

I bought the book and (then) tapes to educate my family and myself in framing methods so we could build our proposed 3800 sft house as a family.I was not new to the construction industry, having worked in the past as an Architect (unlicensed:), a remodeling contractor, and construction supervisor.I had even acted as the general contractor on my own house. However, I had never started and completed a house from the ground up built by my own hands.

Not being a builder I was looking for a practical book to assist in building my 24x36 shop. This book has a lot of good stuff and you can tell that Larry "has been there". I went by the book on almost everything. I wish I had ignored his advice on stud location. He says it is not neccessary to maintain the 16 oc from end to end when you hit interruptions like doors and windows. He says you can simple start the 16 oc pattern over and not sacrifice structural integrity. I agree, but you catch heck when you sheath your walls and it would be better to have a stud under every 16 oc ceiling or second floor joist. He does say that for sheathing or dry wall reasons one could argue for maintaining the 16 oc the entire length of the wall, but he sorta of minimized it and said you can save on stud cost. Being a beginner I followed his advice to the tee. I will now go back and put in extra studs at 4' oc to accomodate my siding. Ignore his stud location advice and you will have a very helpful book on framing.

4-0 out of 5 stars factory work "rules"
This book is a companion to a series of tapes and is best used as a beginners guide to framing 'factory' style.I like Mr. Haun's style and his book is well layed-out to show one how to frame with his system. He hasdone a great job of putting it together in a precise and clear fashion.Ifind that in today's world of custom homes the material is dated and bettersuited to one who is building only once or a novice that wants a"looksee" at what it entails to build a home. But for that it isa very good book and I would recommend the tapes as well.If you want tobuild in todays' environment find a licensed contractor with a commitmentto training their employees and get some structural engineering classes aswell. ...
