5-0 out of 5 stars I love Rex Cauldwell's Books!
This was the first of his books that I have read. I have read it cover to cover a couple of times now.
3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat informative, OK for casual reading
This book does have some useful information, but has a frustrating lack of "how to" descriptions and drawings. I would like to just see a photo or drawing of a properly wired load center, or how wires are routed through the attic. There are a lot of the author's personal anecdotes which may be OK for casual reading but when someone buys a book like this they are looking for hard-core how-to info. It DOES describe many code requirements better than the scattered, ambiguous National Electric Code, which is another review. Whether you're an experienced journeyman, or a homeowner builder like I am, you will get some useful info out of this book, but it won't be your main source of information. Better practical how-to info is at Reader's Digest website.

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect book, If you are not an electrical novice.
At the top of the front cover, in large type, is the advisory "FOR PROS, BY PROS".The book delivers exactly on this claim. If you do not already know neutral from ground, this is not the first book you should buy.But if you do have some electrical knowledge, and perhaps even own your own copy of the NEC, then this book is an absolute must-read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good material...
I recommend this book to all my students who are getting started in working with the AB SLC 500. This book will give you a great start if you are trying to learn about AB PLCs. I also recommend ... for ActiveX driver software to communicate with AB PLCs. The reason I did not rate it at five stars is because the book is a little pricey and it omits some of the more advanced ladder instructions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Damase Bouchou (See more about me) from Canada
Here, we can find a lot examples, of basic Programmable Logical. But, no enough examples using advanced Programming instructions such as, PID, Shift Resister, Sequencer. Excellent book for the beginners.

3-0 out of 5 stars Newman
I absolutely have to admit that the book is very simple to read and understand but for my course sake, my professor has to use an additional book to give me the depth the course requires.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand w/out a lot of junk
The Indian Government has adopted this book to all of its University courses on the subject of security.Teaching them how to hack our systems ;)

1-0 out of 5 stars Give This Book a Miss
I'm sorry. I gave Newman 150 pages in the interest of fairness. But this is the worst textbook I've ever had in any class, and I've been going to school off and on for 44 years! It reads as if the guy was walking down the street with three or four hard copies of his manuscript on the way to the publisher, and fell down the subway stairs. Then, since he was up against a publishing deadline, he just shuffled the papers back together and submitted them for publication. Then, obviously, the publisher was in a big hurry, too, because nobody bothered to proof-read this abomination. I don't know very much about some of the subjects in this book, but the errors and ommissions on the subjects that I do know something about cast suspicion on all of the rest.IMHO somebody should confiscate Newman's keyboard, and he should be barred from writing ever again!Run from this book as fast as your little feet will carry you! Please note that Amazon's system doesn't allow a zero star rating, or that's what I would call this stinker. ... Editorial Review

One of the most daunting endeavors for any would-be do-it-yourselfer is dealing with the electrical--namely, electrical repairs, improvements, and wiring and rewiring projects. The reason for this is simple: mistakes can cause fires, major disasters and expense, and even death. But anyone can learn about safe and correct wiring in order to complete repairs or add new wiring to an aging and inadequate system. This is the book to show you how, from the basics of how electricity works and simple repairs and projects, all the way to complicated rewiring you might otherwise assume must be done by a professional. Included are the most up-to-date electrical code requirements; guides to evaluating, planning, and installing new electrical circuits; repair advice on switches, receptacles, and fixtures; and a detailed and well-illustrated lighting design section. A total of 288 pages of hundreds of illustrations and photographs and a comprehensive reference index make this an ideal book for the beginner, and an up-to-date refresher course for the professional. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Guide to Home Wiring - 3rd Edition: Includes Information on Home Electronics & Wireless Technology (Black & Decker
I've purchased many books on these topics but this series is really well done. The illustrations are excellent and the overall layout makes it really easy for a first time do it yourselfer. I'm currently collecting all of the titles in the Black & Decker series and can't wait to begin using them in my home projects. Highly recommend for first timers. Good Luck!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for an overview, but not for adding circuits or anything more complex
I was getting ready to add a couple rooms to my house and wanted to do the electrical myself.I'm an electrical engineer and have done plenty of wiring throughout the years, but none of it that necessarily complied with the NEC.Oh sure I used 14 awg for 15 amp circuits and 12 awg for 20 amp circuits, but that was about the extent of the code compliance (out of ignorance of the code, not contempt).Well, I wanted to start following the letter of the law so I got the B&D "Complete Guide to Home Wiring".

If you need an excellent book for understanding domicile wiring and most other applications, then PEW is for you.The NEC book reads like Black's Law Dictionary ,fairly dry and abstract information. This electricalreference is the most facilitative wiring book ,i had the pleasure to read through yet.The most dependable wiring information listed around.

4-0 out of 5 stars make an overall plan first
The book is mostly about developing nifty controls using X10. In this field, X10 is by far the dominant controller. Soper explains why, by describing numerous varied ways to have it control items in the typical household. It is probably simpler to read this book than thumb through the official X10 documentation. Soper does not require that you have a deep technical background to implement the book's methods.

2-0 out of 5 stars VERY DISAPOINTED!
Maybe my expectations were too high. The fact is that this book offers you very little unless you really have no clue about how electricity works. The book is also poorly organized. I really couldn't figure out a logical sequence. The book also seems to be very dated. There is virtually no mention of electronic security panels and common programming tasks. In my opinion, it's a book to avoid. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book is spectacular. Fester goes into great detail about the nitric esters, and how nitric acid works on many of these chemicals. His writing on FAEs (Fuel/Air Explosives) is great, quite the entertainment. By far the best part of this book is his description in the manufacture of nitroglycerin. He covers two methods for creating nitroglycerin - one of which uses items all bought at the hardware store (you'll be amazed). He also covers ammonium nitrate explosives, acetone peroxide (for blasting caps), nitromannitol, nitroglycol, RDX (and C-4), PETN, and much much more. He also covers a very cool method for synthesizing nitric acid from sulfuric acid and potassium nitrate - I was impressed.

5-0 out of 5 stars fascinating read
I highly recommend this book for any one in military or law enforcement. Understanding how explosives are made helps you recognize the signs of some one making explosives. Who knew you could use stump remover, drain cleaner, and drug store glycerin to make nitro glycerin? Along with a $200 chemestry set as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars practical and usefull
this book really has all you need to become a conoisseur of the finer explosives. It covers everything from material choice, recipes for the main high explosives through to detonators, safety and storage tips. Each recipe also includes a very good explanation on how to procure certain of the chemicals needed without leaving a paper trail 5 miles long.I can say from personal experience that these recipes do indeed work, and with a bit of creative chemistry one could convert these recipes to work with some of your day to day bathroom, tool shed or cleaning products to produce some crude yet effective explosives(I have succeeded in this without any chemical experience whatsoever).

5-0 out of 5 stars Finished my basement wiring myself with this book
I completed remodeling my basement to add a bath, office, large family room and even re-located the 20A laundry circuit. This book helped me so much, I can't understate it.Passed my city inspection 1st try.Added 6 or 7 new circuits overall for the house.
5-0 out of 5 stars The only wiring book a homeowner will ever need.
Though I feel this book was written for the newbie and the weekend warrior do-it-yourselfer, it has some pretty advanced stuff in it too.But if you think about it, most electrical projects are the same, just with different uses and boxes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference.
I haven't really required this book for any real-world projects yet, however I am very impressed with the coverage. The great detailed colored illustrations, as well as the large 8 1/2" X 11" pages ensure that it will be a very useful reference for the future. I was an electrical engineer by trade (now retired), but this book is extremely well-written for the layman, as well. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction despite some errors
this is a good book for a technician or an engineer trying to get up to speed on the subject. Some typos and misprints are amusing. There are a number of disconnections between the illustrations and the text whichoccasionally make for difficult reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
This book is very good for understanding some basic circuits concepts, but it does not discuss topics like sequential switching, unboudned response. But overall, I would highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Understandable First Book on Electric Circuits
Since the reviews for most of the other first Circuit Analysis books I could find were fairly uniform in their negative opinion on the understandability of those books, I was worried about this book. But, since the reviews of the previous version were very good, I thought I'd give it a try.Basically, I'm very impressed with it.Since I'm working through the book on my own without any peers or professors available to clarify things, the book I use HAS to be readable. This one is.The authors clearly explain almost everything (there are a few minor omissions of (non-core) material that the authors consider to be Intuitively Obvious to the Most Casual Observer (i.e., stuff they thought everyone would have run into from everyday life)).Within each section of each chapter, they immediately follow every concept with several Examples showing how to work with the material and Practice problems for the reader to do.So, if you don't immediately understand the theory, there are several applications available to help you along. At the end of the chapter, the book includes:
