5-0 out of 5 stars Welding: Principles and Applications
Book was in very good condition. Prompt shipment. Ordered on a Friday, recieved on Monday. Very happy. Will definitley do business with this person again if such a need arises.

4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely thorough theory, could use some practical guidelines
This is book is basically a college text on welding-- anda fine one at that.It covers the theory of all the major welding processes (MIG, TIG, Stick, Flux-cored) in dazzling detail with beautiful color photos and diagrams. This includes some simple-to-understand physics of each welding process, explanations of various types of welding equipment, weld joint designs, welding positions, weave patterns, etc.If you read this book cover-to-cover, you will have a thorough grasp of all the theoritical aspects of welding. No other text even comes close to this book in these areas.
5-0 out of 5 stars A college text on Welding
This is the book we used in a college-level welding course I took. It covers virtually every aspect of welding from oxy-fuel, stick, MIG, TIG, SMAW, cutting, basic metallurgy, brazing, welding certification requirements, etc. This text is very detailed and you can directly reference chapters on welding processesyou're interested in doing without having to read the entire (very thick) book. It is an excellent reference and covers step-by-step how to safely setup and use all types of welding gear, how to lay correct beads, how to spot defects, proper weld preparation, safety, and lab exercises to test your skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Moral Impetatives of Architecture in the 21st Century
This book is a credit to Princeton Architectural Press because, rather than recite simplistic platitudes about green architecture, it illustrates green buildings that not only reflect the ecologically and socially responsibile principles of sustainable architecture but that serve the needs of, and indeed uplift, their inhabitants through the promotion of health and spirit.Indeed, as this book informs its readers, green architecture is more than energy efficiency and preservation of natural resources, it is the creation of beautiful environments that integrate cost-effective design and materials to better the well being of their inhabitants. As our consumption of natural resources threatens the vitality of our planet, these principles deserve far more consideration and application.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent incubator for ideas and more
The book is more than a good addition to a coffee table to tempt your unsuspecting guest. The book begins with a short philosophical journey on the definitions of sustainability.I was surprised to find how the word has eveolved as well as its application to architecture.Following the introduction is an excellent breakdown of a wide range of houses and buildings created in diverse environments. The creative ways in which "greenness" was incorporated into the construction of the buildings was fascinating. My wife and I want to build a "green" house, but I realized as I read this book that I really didn't know what that meant. The book is not a how-to manual for direct applications, but offers important perspectives that will likely apply to whatever project one may consider. The book serves as an excellent incubator to reflect on how you create a "green" house. We have a folder of ideas for our "green" house. This book dhowed us how we can make it happen - but without the final blue prints. The book also provided names and examples that provide key references to realizing "green" architecture. For example, we have names and ideas that we can incorporate into our collaboration with an architect for our house design.Overall, I highly recommmend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Over twenty residences are featured
Any home builder who would learn better ways to fit a home within a landscape or ecological environment would do well to consult The Green House: New Directions In Sustainable Architecture first: from tropics to urban jungles and arid Arizona deserts, the authors have traveled around the world studying sustainable or 'green' homes to determine which fit best into their environments. Over twenty residences are featured: the best of those which not only fit into their surroundings and are sustainable, but are also the best places to live. Color photos, blueprints and design specs, and comments on the unique features of each offer plenty of opportunity for learning what makes a home 'sustainable' and 'green'.

4-0 out of 5 stars Buy This Book Before You Build
An excellent resource for anybody who plans to build any kind of solar house.Several detailed (yet easy) design examples walk you through all the necessary heat gain and loss calculations which are necessary for all successful (i.e. comfortable and effective) solar structures. Many types of backup heating systems (including wood stoves) are discussed, including how they work together with the solar heating system.Lots of useful tables and other data in the appendices. This book focuses on a single "solar slab" design concept (which precludes the use of a basement), and only mentions other possible solar designs in passing. That said, it would be foolish to design a solar house without having this very affordable and excellent book in your reference library. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Review for all Refrigeration Technicians.
A great reference book for all HVAC technicians, interested in the entery-level refrigeration repair area .Relates the basics,in full detail. An excellent review of refrigeration hardware and applied principles.Rather than guessing at the chapter questions ,it does have an answer-checker,to verify your homework.Although,I don't think you would want to carry this around,in your trunk. It's a good library study-guide and for trouble-shooting residential refrigetaion non-operations.

5-0 out of 5 stars A refrigeration Techs Must Have
This book covers all the details! I use this book everyday as refrencematerial. It covers everything from the basics, but also gets intocomplicated 2 stage design, and other design areas. From A-Z this book hasit. If you are a refrigeration Engineer/ Operator this is a must for thetext collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars In depth basics to complicated analysis of refrigation cycle
In understanding the refrigeration cycle, Roy Dossat had 25 years in the field before teaching at the University of Houston. I was fortunate to attend the course taught by him in the 70's. It showed the man had much tooffer even to the less experienced technician who needed to start on thebasics. This book is easy to understand and a nice read for those who needanswers to the complicated use of refrigerant and applications that drivethe business. Refrigerant application is in constant change asenvironmental demands alter our lives. This book is a fundamentalfoundation and should be on the reference shelf of all engineers andtechnicians that want a straight foward understanding of the refrigerationcycle. debien@flash.net ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Seriously flawed
Pieper has a lot of practical knowledge but some things he writes are plain wrong. On page 17 he writes: "The frequency of the sine wave is measured as Hz per second" (should be cycles per second which is Hz).On page 18 he says: "the sine wave [is] 220 volts between two peaks" (should be 311 v; 220 is the RMS voltage). On page 23 he says: "amp hours [are] also refered to as amps per hour or amp/hours" (not true). In page 27 he writes: "At some point, the resistance gets so high that it creates heat inside the conductor" (there is always resistance and heat, the problem is the temperature rises too high). He also is convinced the minerals in petroleum jelly help conductivity on the battery terminals (pp. 123&159) and says "search current" when he means "surge current" (pp. 120&125).Whole pages are such confusing technical nonsense that it is impossible to to give a short account. He self published - he should have had a technically competent person help him with theory and a good how-to book editor help with the practical stuff.I'm sure he is a very competent electrician and there is some good practical information in the book, but it is nowhere near as advertised.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Easy Guide To Solar Electric Part 2
I found this book at the public library in my search for a good guide to solar electric systems. I found a small amount of the information useful but, most was a waste of my time. The writer does not explain ideas in a very coherent manner. He uses a great deal of book space attempting to be funny and expressing his political views. If you are interested in a good solar electric book this is not it. I am still looking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a solar book I like
Reading both of Adi Pieper's books on solar I was pleasantly surprised. Being an analyst in the aviation industry, I come across many very boring and conformistic writings. This book is like a fresh breeze. You cannot describe thealternative form of energy generation without critically viewing the conventional forms available. Readers who do not understand this are sad examples of the energy problem we are presently facing. Compared to several other solar books available this book is inspiring, informative, technically precise (although their are two small mistakes with his math), and has helped me install my own solar system. I also reviewed two other books (refusing to name these, which is a cheap shot under the belt) which are boring and very confusing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book on Industrial Refrigeration Systems
It's an oldie, but a goodie! It's still useful ,relevant and dependable. For readers who want the kindergarten pictorial paperback, here you will be greatly disappointed. It does have clear schematical drawings and diagrams,in no-nonsense black and white. The formulas and equations are plentiful and helpful. It's just the best handbook on all aspects and applications for workplace industrial refrigeration operations.I have not found another ,in this particular area, that is on par or better than this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great info, but not for the average person
I enjoyed reading this book as a more intermediate industrial Mechanic, but for that price I expected a book with glossy pictures. I feel the book was over priced for a bunch of pages with drawings. Just a few black and white pics of equipment, and lots of complicated other stuff. The best pic was the cover. To really teach somebody this field you need to be a lot more visual. 5-0 out of 5 stars The book for all refrigeration system designers
I have covered this book in length-no other book or handbook comes close in terms of simplicity of it's explaination. The latest ASHRAE Refrigeration Handbook is a good reference to have when using this book asthere are cross references.Value for money and looking forward to the nextbook that would be specific on Ammonia Refrigeration Systems design. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough examples
I am a an engineering student with a gpa of 3.93 (73 hours). I have found this to be one of the least helpfull books I have ever used. The examples worked are at such a low complexity level, that they do almost no good for solving the problems at the end of the chapters. There are entire concepts that are missing explanation and you can only hope that you will have a good enough proffesor to explain during lecture. I do not have that luxury, mine will only go over the illustrated examples in the book.

Generally a worthwhile beginners tointermediate book for pre apprentice to 3rd year. 5-0 out of 5 stars Deftly presenting a "reader friendly" study of the solar power conversion process
The Passive Solar House: Using Solar Design To Heat And Cool Your Home by civil engineering and solar home expert James Kachadorian is an informed and informative guide to the complexities involved in converting a building to the effective, environmentally friendly, financially beneficial technology of solar power. Deftly presenting a "reader friendly" study of the solar power conversion process, The Passive Solar House covers such relevant issues as equipment and insulation requirements for a designing and adapting solar powered house; "sun spaces"; heating and cooling requirement; insulation, venting, and fresh air; basic layouts and floor plans; interior design for year around comfort, and more. A welcome addition to personal, community library, and academic library Architectural Studies reference collections, The Passive Solar House is very strongly recommended for non-specialist general readers searching for a comprehensive introduction to creating a solar powered home in any urban or rural climate zone or region of the country.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference and...IT WORKS!
My father found this book and used it, in the Southwest, to design his passive solar heating/cooling system.I am in the process of doing the same.In the winter he needs only a few cords of pine to heat a large 2 story house and in the summer, while I swelter in an appartment w/only North facing glass (!!!), his house is very cool and comfortable. The few negative reviews above appear to be from folks who either didn't pay attention as they read or have pie-in-the-sky "theories" of what passive solar really can do for you.Kachadorian is an engineer and very pragmatic. He is not a "green" builder so keep that in mind. His system works very well in real conditions and does so in a cost effective manner if you do the calculations which are all at about the 7th grade level.Id recommend building them in a spreadsheet- easy to do and lets you "tweak" your design as you go along.Honestly, even if you don't use his system, his calculations are very worth while to design in adequate thermal mass and back-up heating into any house.
5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it and Build it.
This is a well-written book about passive solar design. The author easily convinces you that he knows what he is talking about. Facts, formulas, calculation charts and instructions: he gives you all you need to plan and build your own passive solar home ... and get about half of your heating and cooling costs for free from the sun. Live with nature, design with nature, whatever. Buy the book and read it. It is long over due (about 35 years!). I gave away my copy and bought another one for friends, then I ordered the latest book authored by James Kachadorian. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
Debra Rucker Coleman's book, The Sun Inspired House, showcases passive solar houses that are comfortable the year around, light filled, beautiful, healthy for the residents, and good for the environment. These houses cut energy bills in half and cost very little additional to build. Coleman inspires the reader to want to live in a passive solar house, and walks them through the process of making that happen. Her reviews of current books, design analysis software, and websites point the way to more detailed information on all aspects of the design and construction process.
5-0 out of 5 stars A collection of home designs which blends floor plans and modification ideas with sun-inspired homes for all climates
A 'sun-inspired' room is sunny, open, warm in winter and cool in summer, and integrates sustainable design principles with efficiency and useful design basics. And THE SUN-INSPIRED HOUSE illustrates a range of concepts related to the sun, using fifty house plans to demonstrate integrated concepts. This is a collection of home designs which blends floor plans and modification ideas with sun-inspired homes for all climates. Blends of design and construction information provide an architect's expertise under one cover. What it lacks in glossy color photos is more than made up for in practical application designs and insider information paired with homeowner testimonials that they actually work. A top pick.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good content, questionable printing quality
Good explanation of traditional work measurement techniques and does discuss their application to support the "trendy" lean manufacturing techniques. As such, will help practioners of lean techniques to use a sound engineered/quantified approach. At times, seems like a commercial for author's consulting business.Page paper quality, photocopy pictures and illustrations are not professional quality.Price is questionable given printing quality.

3-0 out of 5 stars Motion & Time Study for FAT Manufacturing
Although this book has valuable information regarding traditional time and motion techniques, it does a poor job of addressing the lean manufacturing aspect. In today's dynamic manufacturing environment, the Industrial Engineer is forever pressed to increase throughput and reduce inventories rather than study time standards in infinite detail.Given these constraints, the fusion of more contemporary lean manufacturing techniques with traditional time and motion studies was severely lacking in this textbook.
