5-0 out of 5 stars Bicycle repair and maintenance
Excellant manual! Great info and well illistrated. I use mine a lot!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book... could be better...
This book does a great job covering everything basic to intermediate.I'd highly recommend it and I think that it's the best I've seen in this price range. It's not Barnett's manual but it is better than the Park tools and Zinn books in my opinion.I'd like to see more (and better quality) pictures.I've seen high rescolor pictures in books half this price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Complete, well-written, easy-to-understand.
I like doing repairs and maintenance myself to save money. Now that I have a good bicycle, I want to service it myself. This repair manual is nice. It is full of good illustrations and pictures, tips, and advice. Most things are explained in an easy-to-understand manner. It's obvious that the author likes servicing bicycles, and that he wants the reader to enjoy it too. This makes the book pleasant reading material as well.

Some people are mechanically inclined, and there are those like myself who can't fix anything. For those of us who need a little help in the home repair department, this book will help you through almost any home repair project.
3-0 out of 5 stars the book chapters are short
I would like more detailed discussions. At least for the painting part, the book is too short.

Editorial Review

When describing a favorite room in the house, do you find yourself using terms such as "expansive," "formal," and "spacious"--a marble foyer or a formal dining room perhaps? Or do the words "cozy," "intimate," and "warm" come to mind--a cheery little breakfast nook or a window seat complete with plenty of pillows and a breathtaking view? More than likely, you--like thousands of other homeowners--are drawn to the more personal spaces in your home, where comfort, beauty, and efficiency meet. In Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Quality over quantity
This book is a great resource for anyone wanting a home that places quality over size. There are numerous tips on how to make smaller spaces work smarter and for adding quality touches in simple yet elegant ways as well as hundreds of inspiring photos. In our effort to design a reasonably-sized log home that truly reflects and enhances our lifestyle, this book has given us many ideas for making small spaces work. In the age of 3000+ sq. ft. homes, it is refreshing to see a return to the principles of the Arts & Crafts movement. In fact, you will notice many of the houses pictured have many Arts & Crafts influences. That made the book all the more relevant to us as we plan to incorporate some of those elements in our design.

I am glad to see Reader's Digest has updated this essential book. I always, ALWAYS have a copy of this on my bookshelf.
5-0 out of 5 stars The title says it all!
This book has been amazing so far.I purchased it after carefully checking the various topics covered and available reviews on this book as well as dozens of others like it. Two months ago I paid a plumber $70 to fix a leak on my washer hook-ups to find that all he had to do was tighten a bolt and it infuriated me! I have since vowed to do everything myself as long as I have the right tools and instructions, and this book shows you everything. It includes plumbing, furniture repair, appliances, home electronics, sports and recreation gear, emergengies, and much, much, more!It is well worth the price and I look forward to the things I'll be able to do on my own.I highly recommend this book.

I was a bit disappointed, same old stuff rehashed.AND, not full of do it yourself cleaners/remedies like one would suppose. Not nearly as 'Organic' as germ o'phobe...pages and pages on microscopic blah blah....I clean my home with organic products as much as possible,75%,and feed my family organic food...was hoping for a better mix of NEWER info, as there is A LOT of it, just surf the web!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for environmentally-minded people
Ellen Sandbeck's book, Organic Housekeeping, has joined The Joy of Cooking on my bookshelf as a reference standard. It is packed full of practical ideas, written concisely and with humor. When it comes to housecleaning, I need all three.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good, practical info and fun to boot!
Ellen Sandbeck's latest is a truly practical guide to getting things clean without killing yourself. Some of the tips are oldies, but goodies that our grandparents used, but there's plenty of new, and quite clever, suggestions as well. I also really appreciate that she encourages the reader to find their own comfort level with what they think is "clean." Instead of dropping twenty or thirty bucks on cleaning products that really do more harm than good, buy this book and leave the world a better place! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I fixed my toilet!
While I'm a little terrified of major repairs, this book is great for the kind of things that are too small to deal with theexpense of calling a plumber but too big to just leave it alone.Good instructions, fun to read.Make sure you have all the tools before you start! I read over the instructions, wrote down what I needed, went to the hardware store and stopped by own damn toilet from running.

2-0 out of 5 stars prefer reader's digest book
I didn't find that there was enough basic information in this book to be useful to me.I think the author is trying to make money off of the "concept" rather than provide lots of informative information. And I admit, I was lured into the "concept" and bought the book, with much disapointment.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Empowering Book
I bought this book for my Mom for Christmas last year. She was on her own for the first time in her life. When I visited her this Christmas, she was complaining about her toilet running. I said, "Mom, get the book" She got the book out, I read the instructions out loud to her, and she fixed her OWN toilet. She was so proud of herself. Everyone that called on Christmas got the blow by blow account of how she fixed her own toilet. Buy this book. You will learn how to fix alot of those annoying household problems. Save money, and get a feeling of accomplishment. Buy it for your Mom, Dad, everyone. Highly recommended! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good info but ....
We found the information very useful, however, very disappointed in the "manuscript" construction(I wouldn't call it a book) considering the extremely high price. Don't expect this to hold up for any lenghth of time to use as a reference manual due to poor quality (such good information deserves better). No publisher, no ISBN, pricey

I recieved it in the afternoon and by evening had it listed on ebay and sold it .It was 3/4 full of things I already knew.. I was hoping for a more mobile home specific manuel. I checked back at Amazonand saw Mark's book was offering "seconds" and I snapped one up. Should have got this one first.. It is more mobile home specific. A few of the pictures looked like they came from a home just like mine.. It was written like I would have written it with excellent pictures and illustrations(like correct fastner torquing in the roofing section).Excellent heat tape section.. Editorial Review

In the late 20th century, in spite of the renewed interest in historical renovation, preserving resources, and a strong do-it-yourself tradition developing among homeowners, the art of maintaining and repairing wood windows has somehow fallen by the wayside. Few modern home-repair books include more than a cursory look at wood window repairs and restoration, offering sketchy information at best. A whole generation of people have been raised not knowing that the upper sash in a double-hung wood window is supposed to open just like the lower sash to allow one to easily wash windows inside and out without going outside, or that properly working double-hung windows permit one to adjust home ventilation by allowing warm air to escape out the upper sash and cool air to enter through the lower.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A phenomenal book, for the right consumer
This is one of my favorite books in my DIY collection, which is considerable. But it's not for everyone, as you might guess by reading the few negative reviews that people have posted. This is the book for an intelligent person who likes to fix things, but just hasn't had a previous opportunity to acquaint himself (or herself) with the facts of wood windows. It is densely packed with useful advice about every phase of window repair and restoration, including a lot of information about specific name-brand products (strippers, hardeners, fillers, glazing compound, thinners, paints), which is a big help on your visit to the shelves of the average DIY superstore. There are pages devoted to painting skills - the relative advantages of latex vs. oil-based paints, proper painting techniques and brush care. If you grew up around the trades you probably sucked in this stuff with your daddy's second-hand cigarette smoke, but if you are a self-taught DIYer, you are bound to discover a lot of things you've been doing wrong. As one detractor wrote in his review, this book is one man's opinion about window repair. That's absolutely true, but Terry Meany (who is this person "Jamie Shaw" that Amazon lists as the author?) is really up-front about these being his opinions and explains why he holds them. So it's easy to work from Meany's suggestions and your own experience to your own set of informed opinions. The book is also written in an engaging, articulate fashion. From this book I learned the word "solipsism," how it applies to restoring woodwork, and the connections between divorce and paint removal. It's an unusual DIY book that can provide that sort of information. Armed with this book I was able to dismantle and restore a set of rotted leaded glass casement windows I would never have dreamed of tackling had Terry Meany not given me the courage.Next project is all the broke sash cords...

5-0 out of 5 stars Got Wood Windows?? Then this book is a lifesaver !
Several months ago we bought a 1910 two story with THIRTY double hung windows in it. None were working, all were painted shut inside and out AND to add insult to injury were also NAILED shut. WOW. I started working on them without any reference material and somewhat into the project discovered this book. It was a lifesaver. If you have an old house and want to keep the windows it came with, then this book is for you. If you want to know WHY you should keep your wooden windows instead of replacing them (which I think is a crime) with newer windows, read this book. If you want to know how all the several different types of these windows work and all the little tricks that will save you hours of work and days of indigestion as you start to work on them, read this book. It is also full of sources for antique replacement hardware which alone justifys the price since invariably these old windows are missing locks or other hardware or have a bad pulley or two. This book has helped me in a hundred ways in my project to rebuild these windows. I refer to it constantly. EVERYTHING is covered, even how to make screens for them. There were no questions I had about wooden windows that weren't answered in it. So get one and read it BEFORE you make any decision on rebulding or refurbishing your windows or replacing them, it is well written and humorous. You won't be sorry you did. Now for a couple of tips not in the book. First, very old window pane glazing assumes the consistency of concrete. Since I needed a way to remove the glass from the windows ( a must in rebuliding and refinishing the frames) without breaking it since it is the crinkly imperfect glass that is period to and a part of the windows and no longer available, I discovered that if you paint the glazing heavily with STRIP EZE and let it sit for 30 minutes it will softten the glazing and make it easy to remove. The mothods for removing glazing mentioned in the book do work but the risk of breaking a pane or two is higher. Second, infinite PATIENCE is required and will be rewarded when you work on these windows. Do not try to rush through the process. Do one window at a time, the book will tell you how to OPEN all the windows, but just take one at a time apart. Rushing will cause more problems than you are correcting. And lastly, when using DAP 33 glazing, follow the directions on the back of the can EXACTLY. You are creating big problems for later if you don't. I allow my reglazed windows to "cure" in the sun for two weeks before I begin painting and sealing them. Anyway, buy this book before you make any decisions on replacing or repairing your old windows. You won't be sorry you did and if you have the time, save the old windows, they are really are works of art and in the case of double hung windows, highly functional.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Guide for 'Permanent' Windows
Everyone who's owned an old house has gone through it - after being barraged by literature from window manufacturers, energy companies and design mags, you start thinking about putting in new replacement windows. It makes sense, right?Spend the money now, and reaps the dividends in energy savings with those smart, vinyl clad future-proof windows.

I've had this book since 1991 and it is still the BEST in its class. I own and have read many other "do-it-yourself" manuals on home improvment and thia one is hands down the best. It's simple to read, yet each new section give lots of details and great illustrations.

This is an excellent book for the novice do-it-yourselfer. I was intimidated with a lot of the work needed to be done on my new home, but this book made it all seem possible. It was clear what things I could tackle myself, and what things are best left to a pro. I particularly liked the section on fasteners - it was something I didn't understand, although I thought I should!, and it gave a detailed description of what to use where, and why. I had a lot of lightbulb moments reading this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a good overview of a home and it's systems
I purchased this book along with two other home maintenance and repair books because I am a new homeowner and would like to be on top of my game. I also bought it because I was really concerned about how deeply technical the other two books would get and I knew this would give me a good foundation. This book is good because it breaks down a home into it's various systems and gives you a good general overview of how each of them work and what they're comprised of.The best part about this book, in my opinion, is the Home Maintenance Schedule and Checklist. It gives you a good description of what needs to be done when and you can refer to the book for instruction if necessary.I imagine this book will be instrumental in keeping my home in great condition through the years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Back of the net!
Ideal for stupid people who are interested in home maintenance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Green Cleaning Tips That Work!
I just purchased Clean House, Clean Planet and I simply love it!Written in a straight forward, clear manner, this book provides simple, home-made recipes to keep your house clean without the need for toxic chemicals. The tub and tile cleaner recipe called EarthScrub is phenomenal and rinses clean. It's a shame that her website is no longer available. But her book is still as current as ever and her ratings of the recipes and clear instructions on proper mixing and containers is great.I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for alternatives to commercial cleaners as well as anyone looking to save money on the green products now more widely available (which can be expensive in their own right, although worth it in comparison to their commercial, and oftentimes toxic competitors). The time spent making these home-made recipes is worth the results and the savings!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best make them youself cleaning book
I have read some make your own cleaner books that call for mail order only items and I like this book since it calls for mainly easily found items. I have found most of the cleaners work 100% for me. The leather cleaner did not work for me but I have not found a commercially prepared cleaner that worked either! (I tried to clean a mint leather chair my MIL gave me that my children got dirty and nothing works!) I especially like the diluted vinegar essential oil spray for cleaning wood floors - it works so much better than what you can buy ready made!

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring book with one big flaw
As I read this book, I found some ideas that will be very useful in designing my small handcrafted log home. The idea of ensuring long diagonal views, for example, was a good one. And the pictures and floorplans illustrated the concepts very well.
4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Portfolio
A wonderful portfolio of Not So Big Houses across the country. This book holds a collection of already construction homes and home renovations that embody the Not So Big principles of design.Lots of color pictures and floor plans - some for sale.Certainly not a "How-to" for your own home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Homes with souls and personalities instead of huge, impersonal boxes.
Instead of spending a lot of money on square footage and being unsatisfyed with the end result, Susanka asks for people to look at how they actually USE their houses, and to design them for the lives they live- which increases the cost per square foot, but gives you some stunningly beautiful homes, that LOOK like places you want to live.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have before you start waterproofing
Some contractors recommended the outside fix and others the inside fix.I could not figure out which method would be best for me.After reading this book, I understood which was the right solution for my home.A great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked for us!
We hired a company that installed our interior waterproofing system just as this book describes. That was years ago, and we've had no problems since. If I had not read this book, I could have really been ripped off not knowing what I needed. So many "experts" claim you can solve your problems with regrading and better downspouts, but that had not worked for us.The author helped me to understand why we really did need a french drain system, and gave me an idea of what the cost should be.The book was actually an interesting read too.I never thought a book about solving wet basements could be a good read, but it was.I even spoke to the author twice on the phone for help (he includes his phone number in the book - unheard of!), and he was super helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Waterproof your basement
Jack Master's book is concisely written and easy for even do it yourselfers to understand. There are many well thought out illustrations which help pinpoint the causes of and remedial actions for water in the basement. A great plus is that the author is readily available by email or phone to answer any questions the reader may have. I heartily reccommend this manual. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful hints indeed!
This book is surprisingly fun. You name it and this book has a tip on the most effective way to do it.I bought this book in conjunction with two other home maintenance and repair books and it has many items that were not covered in the other two. I only gave it three stars because I will probably only refer to this one after the other two to verify that there isn't an easier way. What would make this book better?I say combine this book with their "New Fix-It-Yourself Manual" (my top choice), and you have an ace book!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is amazing.
I have not bought this book...yet.I recently borrowed it from the library, and will keep renewing it until they force me to return it.When they do, I intend on hunting it down at my neighborhood bookstore.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source of clever ideas and tips
While not a comprehensive home repair guide (superficial instructions and difficult to see and poorly labeled photos and diagrams), this book is a useful addition to a home repair library. When tackling a home repair, thebook provides numerious time-saving and result enhancing suggestions on howto make the job go more smooothly with a higher quality outcome. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Useful for maintenance, not for purchase of a spa
This is helpful to understand the operations and "guts" of a hottub/spa, but not helpful in making decisions on which brand or type to buy initially. Once you have one, it is helpful in doing repairs yourself, and optimally maintaining it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must-read!!!
This book told me everything I needed to know about spas and more.It was informative, well-written, and just plain great for anyone who owns or is thinking of getting or building a hot tub or spa.I've already loaned my copy to a friend, and just bought a second one for myself. If you want to know ANYTHING about the world of spas...this book is a must-have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and understand. It answered all my questions.
I own all of Tamminen's excellent pool and spa books. While I'm not a pool professional, I am a do-it-yourself person.Any question I have about installation, maintenance, and upkeep, I find the answers in Tamminen's books.I recommend this book to anyone with a spa or a hot tub. You'll find what you're looking for every time. ...
