4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent info, but lacks some details
Make Money With Fixer-Uppers and Renovations is a creative book.It criticizes the flipping books Buy It! Fix It! Sell It! Profit! and Flipping Properties by saying they limit your thinking by telling you that the only type of properties you can get are run-down, traditional junker properties.Eldred challenges that notion by saying that the right house can be a house that feels only like a house, and not a home.He differentiates between a house and a home by saying that a house can shelter you, but doesn't excite you or move you in any way.A home is just like it sounds: a place you call home.By fixing up properties so that they feel like a home, you stand to make more money than by just fixing it up.5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic idea generator
As a veteran rehabber, I do not expect much that's new from most "fixer" books. But this one pleasantly surprised me. It opened my eyes to the fact that I had not come close tomaxing out profits from my properties. The chapter on marketing also weighs in as solid gold. I can see why my FSBO efforts have not paid off like I thought they would. Now I know how to really sell faster and at a higher price--without paying a commission! My guess is that whether your a newbie or pro, this book will definitely guide you to make more money( or collect more rents if you choose to hold--which I do not). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the DIY
This book is loaded with helpful pictures to assist any DIY with a roofing project. I gave it only 4 stars because the BUR section is too brief with no cold app section and the use of cap nails is pictured but not in text for BUR. The book was still helpful in many areas that are part of BUR. If you are doing shingles, buy this book.If you are doing BUR, buy this book and consult your manufacturer's website and technical division for installation instructions and questions.

2-0 out of 5 stars metal roofers need not apply
This book has much info on traditional roofing methods, but if you want useful, up to date info on applying metal roofing, forget it! In this whole book, there are only a handful of pages dedicated to metal roofing( and even they appear outdated). I was very disappointed ...had nothing useful on metal roofing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Author's response to misleading comments
Because to date 25 of 26 people found misleading comments submitted by a "reader from upstate New York" to be "helpful," I would like to respond. I assure you that the upstate New York reader's comments are completely without merit. Apparently, this individual never actually took the time to read my book. No text, caption, or illustration in my book promotes "poor roofing techniques" or "directs you to flash with roofing cement." My book describes accepted roofing-industry practices and proven techniques. Such standard industry practices includes the appropriate, limited application of roofing cement to enhance the weatherproofing of metal or other roof-surface flashings. For unbiased comments about my book, please see the many posted editorial reviews from sources such as the New York Times, Washington Post, and Midwest Book Review. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Joel and Ed are well-known television and radio personalities whose trademark looniness combined with practical advice on old furniture repair and restoration have earned them a large and enthusiastic following. In this book, their particular brand of zany humor does not detract from the fact that it's packed with useful information and well-detailed, step-by-step instructions for 10 of their favorite projects, including gems like a beautifully refinished and reupholstered throne chair, a rolltop desk, and a walnut table painted to look like marble. You'll find solid information on how to find potential used furniture bargains and differentiate furniture worthy of the efforts of restoration from junk. Stripping, sanding, painting, finishing and refinishing, marbling, upholstering, gluing, and every aspect of furniture repair and restoration are covered, amidst Joel's and Ed's bad puns and strange ruminations on the meaning of everything. Even if you normally buy all your furniture factory-fresh from the showroom, you'll have fun with the wildramblings and seriously good advice of the Furniture Guys. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Keep looking
It appears that this book is compiled of a number of projects that Joe and Ed did on their TV Show. But I think there are better resources out there. If I were them, I think I'd look for a new editor & publisher for their next work.5-0 out of 5 stars You'll Laugh, You'll Cry, You'll Upholster!!!
As a long time fan of the Furniture Guys, the book was a must for me. Just like their TV shows, the book is very informative & funny at the same time. An excellent book for those who want to take on home furniture repair themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars You CAN fix it yourself
I was about to junk a 10-year old dryer that wouldn't heat, because the repairman warned me that his visit was going to cost a minimum of $169 for diagnosis, repair time, and parts.Using this book I got out my $15 Sears multi-tester and unscrewed the back panel of my dryer. (The book even shows you how to use testing tools). Within a minute I found the bad part. I looked up the part number, found one on Ebay for $8.99 plus shipping... It came two days later and I had it installed in 3 minutes. My husband thinks I should start a new career as an appliance repairwoman. If I did, I'd use this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a very handy book
I like to know a little about books before deciding if I want to buy them so I checked it out at the library. Within minutes I knew I'd be ordering it off amazon.com. It's got a lot of helpful hints in it and is very detailed. I'd recommend buying it for others as a housewarming gift as well. Although it is a very comprehensive book, it is easy to follow. It has everything from cleaning floors to repairing vacuum cleaners in it. I've found myself approaching tasks I'd never considered myself able to do. This book has become indispensable to me since buying my first home. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Authors / Title are deceptive
THANKS FOR ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!!Book claims in the description to have loads of charts and step by step instructions for remodeling .5-0 out of 5 stars The Carey Brothers' book was the VERY BEST on the subject!!
Morris and James Carey saved my sanity, my wallet, and quite possibly my marriage with their book "Home Remodeling for Dummies"!There are very few things in life more stressful than a remodel, but this bookhelped me put the stress where it belonged- on everyone else! I learned howto plan the addition for my twins room from concept to sunset, and Ilearned how to deal with a contractor and a budget. Keeping both of thoseon the same path as our vision of our remodel was a feat I wouldn't havebeen able to accomplish without the advice from this book. I never wouldhave even attempted this project without the encouragement and confidence Igained from reading it- thus the "5 STAR" recomendation I give"Home Remodeling for Dummies". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bunglopedia.
If your curious like me to what exactly is a Bungalow, what their history is, and would like to see lots of full colour examples, then I think you will find this book quite satisfying. Being that there where so many Bungalows built over such a wide geographic area, I doubt if anyone has covered every example of them in one book. So you may end up wanting to buy a few other books (which there are lots of good ones) to satisfy your curiosity. Non the less, this book does give you a good example of American and some Canadian Bungalow history, also it explores each room of the Bungalow and the rooms furnishings, all with quite a few excellent photo's.

4-0 out of 5 stars In keeping with the architecture...
Wonderful photographs; light, informative reading. What's missing is a better representation of the different regional examples of the bungalow. And they're everywhere.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent photographs of Bungalow period interiors.
This book defines the Bungalow style, explains how it started and flourished, and tells about the men who built and sold them. Then it takes you into still-existing Bungalows across the USA, where the current ownershave preserved the period style.Hundreds of beautiful, full-colorphotographs showcase these homes and give the reader a good feel for theAmerican Bungalow style. At the end of the book there is a list ofsuppliers, sources of information, and further reading that I found usefulalso. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for historic home owners
Finally a concise, easy to read text that any historical home owner should own and read. It is the bible of historical building maintenance! This text should be used by every historical society and historic preservation commission as a guide for recommending proper ways to treat and maintain historic building materials. It would be a wonderful text to suggest to an interested student, as well. Thanks Judith for putting something together that is so user-friendly!
