Wide Ranging and Helpful Advice
Gary Schroeder has written a book that will be a goldmine of information for anyone who owns a log home that is more than a few years old. Plenty of practical advice for caring for, restoring, and fixing old log homes. He covers a large variety of topics: log home finishes and finish problems and repair, sanding versus waterblasting versus sandblasting, chinking repair and replacement, insect damage, decay . .the list goes on. Amply illustrated, plenty of color, vivid diagrams. And Gary knows his stuff--he also owns Schroeder Log Home Supply, one of the US's top log home supply stores. If you want practical help with how to diagnose log home problems, and fix them, this is the place to start.You will not learn to be a professional chinking applicator by reading the section on chinking, this book is more of a "log home owner's manual," not an encylopedia of log restoration techniques and tools. (Just as a car's owner's manual does not tell you step by step how to rebuild the transmission.)

Helpful and Fun
I bought this book as a housewarming gift for my sister, who has moved into her first home.Although it doesn't cover every possible situation, it has given her the confidence to tackle a few basic repairs, which has saved her tons of time and money.
Yes You Can
I found the book to be very informative. I have seen the author, Amy, on Trading Spaces many times and found her to be a very able and creative carpenter and all around handy person.I grew to respect her ability and it was that fact that made me buy the book when I saw it.I'm very glad that I did.

Good but needs updates
I have come to like this book as it has given me a zillion new ideas and especially where to find those things. Each section is organized with lot of colored pics of houses and brand products. Although the idea of mentioning the names of the companies which sell products in the end of a chapter is excellent but it needs updates. Many telephone numbers are incorrect or have changed, as I tried many of them. And there is NO MENTION OF WEBSITES at all which I find surprising. Most of these companies have websites now. Fascinating to this beginner
Alternative building is a recent interest of mine. I hope to have my next home built in a way that is more in harmony with nature and less in harmony with sending my money to utility companies! Looking through this book introduced me to ideas about building that are new to me. The book includes information on where to purchase the technologies discussed in the book. I recommend this book to fellow novices who want to know what is available in Earth friendy architecture.

masonry steps
This book i chose to read speaks about masonry and concrete. Masonry is a part of construction that i was always interested in because it has somthing to do with building. This book helped me out alot because it spoked about the aspects of masonry and concrete. This book will tell you about how to mix mortar and is also known as concrete. Concrete is mixed with water and sand and dry cement. This mixer has to be at a cetain amout of ingredients to be a well mix.When the mix is done then the laying brick proccess can be done. Old book but very informative - shave your legs and slice that onion
I like this book. I only give it 4 stars cause it is old and not very pretty, but it is very useful. It gave me a new perspective on grinding and sharpening. I am sure there are others, but this works for me. The book outlines and discusses various thoughts on sharpening and picks up apart all kinds of traditional notions that you keep running into when researching sharpening on the web. Yes, it talks a lot about the meat cutting industry, but heck, few places demand better edges. Anything that works for their knives will work for anyone else that needs a sharp knife. It is an old book and you will not leave it on the living room table for decoration. It has basic old illustrations and cheap print on cheap paper, but that doesn't make the contents any less useful. He does promote his approach to sharpening and sells the hones etc. I bought the book and the company's 8 inch 2 hone kit (for dry grinding, nice, no oil,no water, just wash the hones in water after use). I have tried many things over the years to keep things sharp. I read the book a couple of times (which doesn't take long) and then went ahead and worked with the sharpening kit. I ground new edges and sharpened a half dozen kitchen knives, from a cheap Martha Stewart/KMart 3-inch paring knife to 8 inch chef knives (steel Wusthof and Sabatier carbon steel) and long thin dangerous looking Finnish fish fillet knives, and for fun a cheap basic thin bladed kitchen knife I found in the back of a cabinet. Every one of them now easily shaves hair from arms, legs, chin etc. They just glide smoothly through an onion, even with skin on.Very happily applying the same techniques to sharpening my chisels, planes, etc. too. Just make sure to grind until you get the burr on the coarse hone, and use a light touch on the fine hone.
The Razor Edge Book of Sharpening
Very helpful book on the art of knife and tool sharpening.I have never had knives as sharp as they are now.I would highly recommend this book.

Poorly written and mostly useless
The author presents several different "methods" for sharpening a knife. They all boil down to "scrub the knife back and forth on a stone". This will produce an edge of sorts but not a very good one. He dismisses the collected wisdom of millennia of knife sharpening as "bull" without any evidence to support his claim. The author says he has "studied" and tested his methods. This mean he tries shaving with each blade until it feels right. The rest of the book is an ad for his products. Don't waste you money.

Very Useful
This book is very useful in answering questions homeowners may have about renovating their homes.The format features questions, the answers "yes" or "no" with checkboxes next to them with room underneath for note taking, and a detailed explanation with tips and hints. For the most part this format works well, although I wish that author Robert Irwin had varied the answers a bit since not every question can be answered "yes" or "no", for example "when will you do the job?"

Lots of useless facts
This book had lots of fix it facts but most were common sense or useless.
If it ain't broke, you don't need this book. Otherwise...
...you need this book. While it lacks the narrative arc of, say, Moby Dick, it's just about as long -- and a heck of a lot more useful.
