Good book, covers almost everything
I hadn't done a roof in over a year so I purchased this book as a refresher to make sure I hadn't forgotten anything.

Roof Framer's Bible
Had hoped for information as to how roof framing elements join together in various configurations, but found very little on this on this.

Good for the DIY
This book is loaded with helpful pictures to assist any DIY with a roofing project. I gave it only 4 stars because the BUR section is too brief with no cold app section and the use of cap nails is pictured but not in text for BUR. The book was still helpful in many areas that are part of BUR. If you are doing shingles, buy this book.If you are doing BUR, buy this book and consult your manufacturer's website and technical division for installation instructions and questions.

metal roofers need not apply
This book has much info on traditional roofing methods, but if you want useful, up to date info on applying metal roofing, forget it! In this whole book, there are only a handful of pages dedicated to metal roofing( and even they appear outdated). I was very disappointed ...had nothing useful on metal roofing!

Author's response to misleading comments
Because to date 25 of 26 people found misleading comments submitted by a "reader from upstate New York" to be "helpful," I would like to respond. I assure you that the upstate New York reader's comments are completely without merit. Apparently, this individual never actually took the time to read my book. No text, caption, or illustration in my book promotes "poor roofing techniques" or "directs you to flash with roofing cement." My book describes accepted roofing-industry practices and proven techniques. Such standard industry practices includes the appropriate, limited application of roofing cement to enhance the weatherproofing of metal or other roof-surface flashings. Practical primer on roofing
Lots of practical 'job' descriptions: replacing shingles, repairing leaks, finding leaks, etc.Many useful cartoons describing the process.Good advice on assessing the condition of the roof to determine how much needs to be replaced.Nice suggestions for preparing flashing to chimneys.

Much of the information presented is factually correct, but incomplete or based on old information.Single Ply section, for instance, lacks information about the most common membranes in use today and incorrectly identifies declining technology as current up to date technology.Lack of quality drawings or pictures makes this volume uninteresting. The Slate Roof Bible
This is an excellent book that anyone who owns a house with a slate roof needs to purchase to understand their roof.While you may have no plan on ever going up their yourself to repair a leak, educating yourself against the lies today's roofing contractors will try to sell you is priceless.

It's difficult to picture a reference book as literature, but Jenkins climbs that peak in The Slate Roof Bible. It's that rare combination of fact and experience that creates learning and appreciation. With beautiful pictures and sweeping detail, Jenkins' covers the height and pitch, the manufacturing and maintenance, and even the history of slate roofs. I'm not certain that you'd know this much about `the worlds finest roof' if you had one over your head, even if you fixed them for a living, but this book is more than information. It's a love story, and Jenkins travels the world to deliver the variety and nuance of the stone that affords shelter for countless generations. The heat rises. Bats cut loose. Angry bees buzz past. It's all in a day's work, as slaters anxiously attempt to match tiles, all the while pondering the mystery and genesis of the stone itself. Perhaps it isn't romantic for people who mine, cut, haul, and work slate for a living, but reading The Slate Roof Bible, you start to believe it is.
