5-0 out of 5 stars A must for architechture students on an alternative process.
Perhaps the most amazing this is that this structure, visible from the Pullman highway, cost less than one million dollars to build. What a bargain when one considers that this building does for the UI what threeseparate facilities do for WSU if one discounts the differences in theathletic conferences. This slim book details how Trus Joist Corp. of Boise,ID, coordinated engineers and contractors and built the largest indoorcollege facility in the nation using laminated veneer lumber and theTRUSDEK structural system developed by Trus Joist. Not only that, they didit within ten months after the bid was accepted, completing the project intime for the first home football game. The author, Peter T. Johnson, knowswhat he's writing about. He was once the CEO of Trus Joist and he writes: "I remember the day in 1974 when the University opened the sealed bidsin Moscow, ID.That morning, having experienced many times the bid, award, construct cycle, I felt the customary anxiety that prevails between theoffer and the acceptance phases, as one might await a marriageproposal." Of course the bid was awarded and thus begins the union. And like many marriages, there were some interesting dips in the road. Warping due to weather moisture and other causes was a major concern. Finally, the project was completed and dedicated on Oct. 11, 1975.Itsname is officially the William H. Kibbe-ASUI Activity Center Dome.Kibbieis a former UI student and was a monetary contributor to the project. Oncefinished, the Kibbie Dome received recongition in the architecture andengineering fields world wide.Engineering News Record, ArchitecturalRecord, Forest Products Journal, Western Building Design, and other majormagazines covered the building extensively.Articles about the structurewere published in the Japanes and German languages. The project's mostprestigious nod came when the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)awarded this impressive structure the ASCE Outstanding StructuralEngineering Achievement Award for 1976 beating out a multi billion dollarmall project in New York State. In the last two decades plus, Palouseresidents have come to take this awesome building for granted. "Raising the Roof" reminds us that great things can beaccomplished with bold ingenuity and very little money, even in this 20thCentury.I recommend this book to any and all architect students as wellas those interested in local architectural history.Included are severalbeautiful photographs. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars no basics
Many of the chapters in this book are written by individual carpenters who "do things their own way". For instance, in the first chapter, the writer says to disregard previous techniques and use his method. In the 2nd and 3rd chapters, the writer talks about using power tools that are either outrageously expensive or not even avilable any more. Further, there is no discussion or summary of basic roof geometry and calculations. The tag phrase "for pros by pros" is quite misleading. It is merely 15 chapters of guys telling how THEY frame a roof. Anyone, even pro carpenters using this as a refresher, should start off with a tutorial on basic roof geometry, design, and construction methods. If you are looking for info on how to properly design and construct roof framing, don't waste your money on this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good reference for stick roofs
In recent years, the roof has become the focal point of many NA homes. No longer content with simple styles, rangy, monstrous roofs are the norm.Additionally many of them are likely to be built with either trusses, or maybe manufactured wood sticks. These techniques shave dollars right into the developers pockets. And frankly have become the norm in the last 5 to 10 years. They aren't much covered in this book.2-0 out of 5 stars where's the info
The rafter jig idea was great, but there just wasn't enough info and detail to actually build it (I thought).I must admit, I'am not a pro as this book "by pros for pros" claims, but I guess if I was a pro, then I would probably find the information in this book to be too elementary. This book is ok for learning roof basics, but it's not enough info and detail to fully learn all that's involved with building roofs. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars too costly
this text is too costly, and it has many loopholes, purchase descartes' text on the same topic instead

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference and educational book
This manual covers every type of roofing except composition shingles. It is technical, but can be easily understood by someone with a basic understanding of roofing. It presents the design philosophy for roofing selections and considerations for designing a lasting and watertight roof. Every architect or builder should familiarize themselves with this information before designing and installing a roof. There would be a lot less roof litigation. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Vendor-Neutral Recommendations
As a professional in the building materials industry, this book is a welcome surprise.Generally, books of this nature that are designed to assist in the conception, design, purchase, installation and upkeep of any portion of a building usually degenerate into a barely-tolerable advertisement for one manufacturer or another.Mr. Reid's book, on the other hand, does an excellent job of discussing what you need to know to make a sound decision, what you should be trying to accomplish, and the options that you have in trying to accomplish your task.I would highly recommend this book to anyone in the construction or building management industries.

4-0 out of 5 stars This Roofing Book gave me all the info I needed.
I was able to find out everything I needed to know for my roofing project. Reid's book was complete and organized in a way that made it easy for me to find and diagnose my situation. The book also gave me information on financing and estimates to reduce my energy costs so I was able to profit from fewer roof repairs. I am better able to sell my roofing projects because I can reduce facility costs for heating, which Reid's book shows how to do. There was lots of info on materials and step by step sample thermal and expansion calculations. Compared to other roofing books, this one was pretty good. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fills a need
I gave this book 4 stars and not 5 because it was not large enough. It should have been the next size format, so that the drawings would render better. That said, however, I must recommend this for several reasons: 1, there is a paucity of books on roofing, a mundane subject at best and of interest to few people. However, for those people, not much to choose from. "Low slope roof" is industry parlance for a commercial/industrial roof which will have layers of hot tar and roofing felt, then gravel, placed on a generally flat roof. This book explains it all, from a history of this type of roof, to various materials used, what to watch for, how to write specifications, and problems that might occur in the design or construction phases. 2, for those architects that design or specify roofs, it explains roofing in depth, and helps avoid expensive mistakes that experience alone woould teach.5-0 out of 5 stars Roofing Book Provides Helpful Information
I reviewed this book for research on my own book, "The Roofing and Cladding System Handbook" by Robert N. Reid. It was a helpful book for anyone with a low slope roof and the diagrams and figures provided some really good information on causes of roofing failures in low slope systems and wind loads. The book also provided very good information for roofing asphalt. I acutally reviewed both the early version written in 1982 and this version written in 1996. I felt that this book is a very good book but it is especially helpful for roofing consultants, and others who specialize in roofing construction and problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars Help for building owners, consultants and architects...
In the opening chapters the authors identify many roofing industry problems... insufficient owner budgets, over-reliance on warranties, insufficient work inspection, poor design and construction, and lack ofmaintenance.Read more
