useless
Easily the most useless purchase I ever made. The authors thoughts are random and dispersed. The book is not organized as a troubleshooting guide. It does not provide symptoms and flowcharts for determining the cause. At best it is an incomplete, brief, overview of television basics, with a couple of reminiscences of the authors experiences with tv repair.If the paper were recycled, the book would be worth .00023 cents.

A decent purchase
I found this book to be helpful for the most part.My recommendation would be to use this book AND spend the 25 bucks for your T.V.'s service manual.Do an internet search or something, they're out there.Mine came on a disk from an online company.As usual, the flow charts in the service manual were next to useless.However, using the information in this book in combination with the schematics and part info in the service manual, I was able to repair my TV.Don't expect to fix your TV with just this book.It tells you exactly what parts to look at, but without your TV's service manual, you can't equat them to your specific TV.An example, a rather common fault is for the Horizontal Output Transistor to go bad.This fault, and how to correct it is stated in the book.That's all fine and dandy, but without your TV's service manual, you'll have no idea which transistor is YOUR Horizontal Output Transistor.My only grip is that Amazon stated that this was a hardback.It's not.It's a softcover.Good Luck.

Great for intermediate tv techs...
The book gives an overall view of how today's tv's work and how to find most faults.Alot of the troubleshooting tips are a little too general in their explanations and constantly refer you to the tv's Photofact or schematic, which is kind of annoying.But I did find myself learning quite a bit.I've only been into tv repair for a year and I found the book to be fairly chanlleging, but left me wanting more-which I guess is a good thing.Read more

Get it!!
After 30 plus years in this field, I still have questions.This book answers them, in easy to understand motor shop talk.Between this book and "Electric Motor Repair" (Rosenberg and Hand), most questions will be answered.

Disappointed
I had this book on backorder for three months, eagerly anticipating new ideas, new methods of testing, and more.Having been in the electric motor industry, from being a motor repair journeyman in the US Navy to in-depth research into motor repair and testing at universities and for utilities, for about 20 years, I have seen major changes to the industry since the early 1980's. Major Appliances Repair Manual
Troubleshooting and Repairing Major Applicances by Eric Kleinert is a good reference and trouble shooter for major applicances. It points to the possible problems and let you the consumer decide whether to fix or just buy a new appliance.

Better than usual TAB trash but not substitute for factory m
Tinkering with old Briggs engines is fun and I've saved dozens from the dump over the years. This book is better than some I have read, but it's no substitute for the factory manuals for a specific engine or engine series. It does have some information the factory books don't, such as ways to get around needing some of the tools-although Briggs tools are not terribly expensive and are readily available.
Wish it would have been better
The book should be called overview of briggs and stratton engines. I found that the book lacked any usefull information for the home do it yourselfer. The book has little information on the primer bulb type carberator and little to no information on trouble shooting and solving problems of this type. His vage explanation as well as confusing illistrations has me regreting that I purchased this book.

Valuable Tool
As a Certified Electronics Technician with a Degree in Electronics, this is the companion book you need if you want to repair microwave ovens. I say "if you want" because like TVs, VCRs, and most other electronics, microwaves are almost throw away items this day and time. The cost for most isn't worth the price to have it repaired. However if you want to do it you should consider that microwave ovens can be dangerous to repair. I don't mean the repair itself, if you follow correct safety measures. I mean that when you remove the back of an oven you are risking leakage if you don't make sure it is sealed when you get ready to reassemble the oven. The leaks can only be found with the proper meters, which can be costly. It can be even more costly because of the danger you may encounter, if the oven isn't sealedproperly. The parts are rather costly also. If you need to replace a magnatron for example, you would probably be best advised to junk it and purchase a new one. Putting yourself and your loved ones in danger to save a couple of bucks isn't worth it. It is a different story, of course, if you have the needed test equiptment and tools. Even then I would advise you to be very familiar with electronics. Just one example of the prices going so low that a new purchase is advised; When my Brother purchased our first VCR it cost $1200.00. Back then you had to pay at least $65.00 to get the back removed by a technician and the heads cleaned, and nothing more done. As you evidently know you can buy a new VCR, especially during model year end, or at Christmas for around $65.00 and up. These newer models will do so much more than the $1200.00 model we first purchased there is no comparison, and at a price you once had to pay for a cleaning. Oh yeah, tapes were at least $15.00 each, if you could find them. What are they now, maybe $1.00 each or less.

Very practical book
This is one great book for practical book on repairing microwave ovens. Lots of general and specific advice on major brands. Even though uWaves have become a commodity item, ie less than $$$, it becomes unlikely that a commercial repair shop can remain in business. But if you can get several uWaves, ie dumpster diving, and get a few spare/swap parts, the assistance of the book demystifies magnetrons, high voltage caps, safety interlocks, and fuses. Terrific as an overview, review, or supplement...
I studied and learned most of this stuff years ago, and then proceeded to forget much of it as the years passed.But as a software developer, I have occasionally needed to refresh my understanding of some neglected area of mathematics... and this book has been invaluable for that.It might also be helpful as a supplementary text for students learning some area of math for the first time, since the explanations are often much more helpful and straightforward than anything I remember from my textbooks.
Expand your understanding of numbers and nature
I don't imagine that "Mastering Technical Mathematics" will wind up on the top of anyone's book list. But if you have an interest in math the book can expand your understanding of numbers from counting through geometry and trig on to the calculus. If you're looking for a book to get you through next weeks' test on logarithms I'd stick with a Schaum's Outline but if you really want to know what a logarithm is andhow they are derived, how they are applied, and how they can make your life easier, well, all of that is found here.
Great self teaching math book

Thomas Edison Tech. Voc. H.S. Grad NYC
I received this book in High School as part of the "Electrical Installation" curricullum in January of 1986. At the advice of my instructor, Mr. Bergovoy, I didn't return the book at the end of the school term. I ended up having to pay for the replacement. However, this book has paid for itself thousands of times over the last 20 years. I recommend it to electricians ranging from the student to the master level..

Excellent guide
I am an electrician whose job requires trouble shooting different types of equipment for different customers in many different environments. I see all kinds of motors and machines and jury rigs. This book is invaluable for troubleshooting any motor on the planet. It gives excellent reference schematics and diagrams that coincide with the different chapters. If your looking for a book that is all meat, if your looking for the "bible" of motors, if your desire for motor knoweledge is from the most basic to advance knoweledge.....YOU have to buy this book.I am an electrician, and industrial controls technician and I have found no better book.I am looking through my well used second edition, that was given to me while in college in 1984, and if you could see just my first page of the book, at how much highlighting and notes in the margins there are, you would see that nearly every sentence in the book is packed full of useful information,...IF... you take the time to read it.I believe it is as clearly written as you can get on a technical subject.I consider myself just a slightly above average student, and even I could understand this material.From casual interest in motors to engineer, this book needs to be on your technical bookshelf, unlike other technical books at this price that I threw out after college, this is a keeper.Check out all the other reviewers here, then buy the book. ... Don't buy this book
Not really sure what the auidence is for this book.It's too basic for the appliance repair professional and too advanced/generic for the Do-it-yourself person.I offers lots of information on the operational theory/concepts, but no real particulars for a specific model.Bought this book with the hope it would help me fix for gas stove - useless (I ended up fixing the stove myself with no help from this book) Sound basic principles, easy to use diagnostic charts

Imperfect but Indispensible
This book often makes VCR's seem easier than they are. Don't expect an easy go of it; there's scads of detail here, and the pictures are plentiful and well done (digital edition). I needed a good VCR to transfer my old tapes to DVD. If you've seen the junk available in 2005, even at prices often exceeding $500, you'll do what I did -- find used high-end VCR's from the 1990's in decent shape, and learn to maintain them yourself. In that regard, this 2000 book covers those very units. Its directed almost entirely at VCR mechanics, though some elements of electronic troubleshooting and basic component replacement are here as well, including video heads and head amps. Frankly, I wouldn't know a brake shoe arm or head amp from a hairbrush, but this book was exceptionally useful in leading me through uncharted territory. It won't be your only source; many Websites will also be consulted, and you'll eventually need a service manual for your specific VCR (around $20 on the 'Net). It's ironic that when transferring VHS to DVD, a VCR with superior playback is more important than ever, yet good new VCR's don't exist unless you can sink 5 grand in a pro broadcast unit -- and even then, you'll see more plastic than you'd expect. I'm still plowing my way thru this useful book after a month, but it has helped beyond my expectations. If you want to find and keep a good VCR, start here.

Home VCR Repair Illustrated
I was pleased with this book, because of all the repair information it had. Prior to this I had bought similar books that I didn't check out completely and found them to be extensive owner's manuals. I know how touse and hook up my VCR, what I wanted to know is how to repair one.Ifound this book to be loaded with helpful instructions, on cleaning andrepairing your VCR. I have many dog earred pages and post-its sticking outof it.One problem area for me was trying to identify the different partson MY new VCR, even though there were many useful photos throughout thebook and the book isn't that old.I also have an untrained eye, that couldbe some of the problem. Even with my "handicap," though, I got alot out of it and am looking forward to my next purchase of volume II. Super Information for Regular People!

Good News for the Average Homeowner
This book is for the person that simply wants to understand the basic common sense of household appliances.In reading the book I felt as though my father was sitting next to me advising me as to what to do next.The recipe for cleaning the dishwasher and the insights about keeping the fridge running are worth the price of the book (and there's a whole lot more besides that in the book)!If you are like me and not too knowledgable about home appliances then I highly recommend this book.It will be one that will be open often.

Excellent Common Sense
I cannot believe the other negative reviews.This book was written for people like me. I didn't have a whole lot of knowledge of how things worked around the house growing up and this book is like having my father next to me advising me on what to do next.There is a lot of common sense things in this book that will assist the common person in the house about how to fix the little things that can cost so much.I needed it.If you are a do-it-youself person and already have a lot of knowledge concerning household products then this may not be the one for you. If you want to know more about how your appliances work in your house and also learn to discover a rip-off when you see one - then this book is for you.It is a must for every household.The procedure for cleaning the dishwasher is worth the price of the book!!
