5-0 out of 5 stars Guaranteed to Please
I enjoy the PBS series "America's Test Kitchen," so when I received this book as a Christmas gift last year I was very excited. Now, almost a year later, I have cooked my way through scores of the recipes in this cookbook and there is not a dud in the bunch. This book takes basic, American fare and boil it down to it's most essential (and flavorful parts), allowing you to cook tasty favorites. My only caveat is that is you are looking for quick meals, this may not be the best choice--many of the recipes are quite time consuming. However, if you only want one cookbook in your kitchen, this is the one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Cookbook Ever!
I've purchased a ton of cookbooks over the years I've been cooking at home. However, once I purchased this cookbook all of the other cookbooks have become covered in dust. The only exceptions would be a handful of other Cook's Illustrated recipes not covered here in the America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook. If you are a cooking enthusiast or a new beginner this is the cookbook for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much better than your mother's Betty Crocker cookbook
So you think you know the best way to make meatloaf, chili, and chicken soup?

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Own Book for Serious Residential Do-It-Yourselfers
This book is an excellent reference book for use in designing, planning, and building a new house or remodeling an existing one. Whenever I plan on doing something on the house, I double check with this reference before finishing my designs and plans. It's a must own book for serious do-it-yourselfers.

3-0 out of 5 stars One volume encyclopedia
Experienced readers will benefit from its brief summaries and drawings covering the broadest range of topics imaginable. Some economizing is evident in the paper and printing quality, some of the drawings look 50 years old, but there is lots of reference information, like span tables, solar position data, etc. Probably not the last word on every topic, but still worth consulting. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not Good Introductory Textbook Material
This is a required book for an introductory lighting class I'm taking.Since we are solely relying on this book and it isn't supplemented with lecture material, I find that, without familiarity with lighting terminology and concepts, it is very difficult to understand -- very cryptic with the seemingly overused language of the field. While the author may be very knowledgeable, I feel the book is not very well written and the target audience is, perhaps, not intended to be, essentially, the layman.I don't find the organization of ideas and concepts to be clearly laid out or communicated well and, as they unfold, and I come to understand what the author is trying to say, wonder why it was made so difficult -- is that all he means, geesh and why didn't he tell me that earlier. It would be easier to understand the general concept of things first, even in plain English perhaps, and then go on to a more technical description to learn the language of the field and get the details.Just seems to make simple things very complicated, especially with the language, flow of ideas, and phrasing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great teacher
While I was studying Interior Design at Parsons a number of years ago, I had Gary Gordon as a Lighting Design Instructor. He was by far one the best teachers that I had.He is very knowledgeable and has the unique ability to easily communicate the many aspects of both design and lighting. I highly recommend any publication he has authored.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book for novices.
The book begins with an inspirational and somewhat simplistic insight into lighting design.Simply as a study of lighting contrasts. While this is a very important aspect of LD,it is by far one of many concepts a professional must use.The book refers to many technical aspects of lighting without giving any "meat" or more in depth information, which I would have enjoyed. If you are new to LD or are an architect or engineer who has little experience with lighting,it is a very good lauching point. If you are technically knowledgable about lighting and want some inspiration, read chapter 1 and the last chapter on Design for concepts ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best coffee table book ever !!!
Recently I have found myself drawn to graphics of all kinds. Being a huge fan of Tashen books and seeing this book on their website I decided to order it. Now at $200.00 this was quite a big purchase but this book is incredible. The color plates are beautiful and the information about the designs is very complete as well as interesting. This is a huge book! I think it must weigh in the neighborhood of 10 lbs. It is not a book to take to the beach for alittle read. However, it is a book to get inspired by and it will inspire you no matter what your art medium is. This is a book that I will tresure for years to come and I am sure if you decide to invest in this book you will not be disapointed. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Ideas
I watch "Designed to Sell" every night - sometimes even the reruns! I looked forward to getting the book but was a bit disappointed about the book's layout. For one thing, on some of the pages they use very small print with a font color that almost matches the background of the photo on the page. I actually had to go back through the book at one point because I had missed some of the write-ups once I realized what they did.
4-0 out of 5 stars Much more informative than I thought it would be...
I was expecting this to possibly be a picture book full of before/after shots.Instead, it's much meatier than I was expecting. So far, so good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
Designed to Sell is a well written book with helpful tips and photo comparisons from the Designed To Sell program.Lisa Laporta has a wonderful sense of style on a budget.I'll look forward to a possible sequel to this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Welding: Principles and Applications
Book was in very good condition. Prompt shipment. Ordered on a Friday, recieved on Monday. Very happy. Will definitley do business with this person again if such a need arises.

4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely thorough theory, could use some practical guidelines
This is book is basically a college text on welding-- anda fine one at that.It covers the theory of all the major welding processes (MIG, TIG, Stick, Flux-cored) in dazzling detail with beautiful color photos and diagrams. This includes some simple-to-understand physics of each welding process, explanations of various types of welding equipment, weld joint designs, welding positions, weave patterns, etc.If you read this book cover-to-cover, you will have a thorough grasp of all the theoritical aspects of welding. No other text even comes close to this book in these areas.
5-0 out of 5 stars A college text on Welding
This is the book we used in a college-level welding course I took. It covers virtually every aspect of welding from oxy-fuel, stick, MIG, TIG, SMAW, cutting, basic metallurgy, brazing, welding certification requirements, etc. This text is very detailed and you can directly reference chapters on welding processesyou're interested in doing without having to read the entire (very thick) book. It is an excellent reference and covers step-by-step how to safely setup and use all types of welding gear, how to lay correct beads, how to spot defects, proper weld preparation, safety, and lab exercises to test your skills.

4-0 out of 5 stars great and frustrating....
kudos to wendy on jumping in and giving us some patterns that are indeed needed in the world of pattern design.i've been sewing for a year and a half so i jumped right into the pants pattern.wendy does do some assuming, which is okay, though sometimes frustrating.i wish she were a little clearer.for instance, just have a page that serves like the back of a pattern envelope for each pattern. it'd be nice to know things like zipper size, fabric amount, etc.in one convienient area. is every curved seam allowance assumed to be 1/4" (i.e. on the fly)?i find myself flipping through the book, searching for specifics. a nice clear format would be refreshing. the text of this book is great for beginners and brusher uppers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sound Advice
This book is a refreshing change from all the dinosaurs I've seen on the shelf with the outdated projects like hideous curtains and drab 80's clothing. This author appeals to a fresh new generation of indie-inspired crafters, from the seasoned seamster/stress to the (and most importantly)fledgeling just trying to get their damn machine started. I've been there, and Built By Wendy's wry, humorous approach to a traditionally intimidating craft gives sound advice on everything from what kind of machine to buy, to shortcuts in shopping and the actual process for El Cheapos like me who don't have the extra time or cash to spare! If you buy no other book about sewing, please do the smart thing and invest in this one. Also, for more thrifty crafts you can do with 50 cent garments from the thrift shop and nary more than a pair of scissors and some ingenuity, check out Generation T by Megan Nicolay. Her humorous writing style and dollar sense make this book appealing for anyone who wants that cool indie Urban Outfitters look for less than they paid for that McDonalds lunch!

3-0 out of 5 stars Hate tissue paper patterns
The book itself is nice. The layout is clean and usable. But I cannot cannot stand tissue paper patterns.Who has the space to comfortably lay out such fragile paper without concern for tearing and readability (can people really read the text on them without their eyes suffering?!)?Not me, obviously.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding the emotional basis of behavior
Patricia McConnell has written a wonderful book filled with engaging stories and much practical advice for dog owners. She incorporates the latest research findings on the workings of the dog's mind in presenting her own cases from her behavior counseling service. Her discussion of counterconditioning covers an extremely valuable concept that is not stressed (or even utilized) enough by other behaviorists and trainers. This technique is invaluable and of nearly limitless potential in alleviating many emotional distresses and disorders in dogs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Improve your relationship with any dog
This book is packed with well-researched information about interpreting dogs' behavior, but it's still fun and easy to read. I used to be scared of dogs because I thought their behavior was unpredictable, but now I feel confident that I can determine when a dog is feeling playful and when it is anxious (and may be about to bite). A very, very helpful book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Knowledge and fun at the same time? You bet!
I think it goes without saying that pretty much everyone who has a pet dog love's their dog and is convinced their dog loves them. But let's be honest. Most of us are pretty ignorant when it comes to really understanding dogs (and certainly in my case, many other things). So while it is true that you don't have to have great knowledge and understanding in order to love some other being, including your pet, you can certainly enhance and nurture any relationship through better knowledge and understanding. And that is what this book can do for anyone who wants to have their relationship with their animal companion to be the best it can possibly be.Not only is this book a great source of information and knowledge for understanding the emotional bonds we have with out 'best friends' and how to make the most of those bonds, it has riveting true stories that tie in beautifully with the different emotions we see and experience. When you combine this book with Dr. McConnell's earlier book "The Other End of The Leash" you will have perhaps the most comprehensive understanding of your dog and your relationship with your dog that is in print today. And a fun read too. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful to look at but..................
I LOVE this book as something to look at and a source for insiration. However, I was expecting to be able to make some of the projects.Without a full assortment of jewelry making tools, glass cutting tools and soldering tools (all are need for nearly every project)its just not possible.I was disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty little things run rampant!
This book is intriguing.A virtual feast for the eyes every time you look at it.I am on my third reading now and I am still finding new excitement as I absorb the huge amount of information and ideas tucked within the gorgeous photos and ideas. Her style is completely apart from my style of artwork. She is obviously more successful with her style, after all I am in the armchair in my robe reviewing her book. While she is in her wonderful chandelier filled studio producing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gosh, I love this book. It's yummy..
This book will make you want to go out and try that soldering iron. The peek into her studio is so inspiring. Sally Jean is very talented and funny. The projects are diverse and just lovely to look at. Try a few and put your own look into it. With this book and her directions you can be making your own pretty little things in no time.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book makes the hobby 'real' for my kids
I purchased this book after my children (4, 5) developed an interest in collecting sea glass after finding their first pieces on the beach. This summer we collected pounds of the stuff on vacation, and the children couldn't wait to get home to the book to see if they had found any rare colors (we found gray, pink and black!).

A book for the rest of us!Adam Lindeman lays out the basics surrounding the world ofcontemporary art using a series of interviews with collectors, dealers, critics and curators. As the book explains, contemporary art is hugely popular all over the world and the internet and art fairs have changed the nature of the business. This book is a primer for those who have touched the edges of the contemporary art world and will likely prove interesting forthose who are already knowledgable.

This book has many excellent details in obscure construction situations. Some are a bit better in theory than practice; however this book will make an excellent companion when in a pinch and lacking creativity. For the most part the book describes better practice (check local codes before taking it as gospel) for say a designer or general contractor not entirely sure or alien to specific methods of contractors or subcontractors.Don't expect a book to read from cover to cover but a quick reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Series
I found this series of books to be very well written and drawn. What is great is that they present several different ways to accomplish a task, instead of limiting you to one conventional method. The writing is very clearly written, and I own and recommend all three books in these series.Excellent reference.

Start at the beginning... The spiral metal binding is great, a real manual, easy to keep page being referenced open infront of you. Graphically the pages are consistent in their layout and composition so that the important information is easily seen. Not like many references where drawings, details and notes from different sources are obviously pasted into pages. It reminds me of the famous Architectural Sheet Metal manual published by SMACNA, that is a part in nearly every architect's reference library.

I really do enjoy the book except that on some important topics in the class I am taking with this book there is little information. Nonetheless on the topics it greatly expands upon the book shows impressive and accurate knowledge. The pictures also aid in examples and are for the msot part the best picture examples that any book could offer. ... Read more
