1-0 out of 5 stars Bogus! (well, at least for the reviews)
This may be a good book (maybe even a great one) but don't judge it from the 3 reviews before mine, they are blatantly fake.
5-0 out of 5 stars Motivating
Feeling tired of how my house looked, this book was just what I needed! Perfect if you are looking for simple changes or a complete room makeover. The effortless, yet dramatic, changes she suggests in her book were so easy to follow. The photos were a great visual; and motivated me to organize as well! Your home really can effect your mood and your life. This book helps to give each room a pick-me-up!

5-0 out of 5 stars Design Made Simple
This book is terrific. It really lays out design ideas in a beautiful and engaging way, whether you are just rearranging a room, or completely redecorating it! The book is SO easy to follow. Beautiful design! I just love all the great, inspirational photos. It's such a simple concept. Who knew it could make this much difference?!? Thank you! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty book
This is a great little book of knitting ideas. The photos are beautiful and the instructions are understandable. It is a great price for a gift for your favorite knitter!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful one skein interesting projects
I love this book of small one-skein knitted projects.I've knit the adorable baby hat, the felted clutch purse, the cable footies, and I have my eyes on making the felted bowls, the baby petal bib, and the spiral rib bag.The instructions are clear and easy to follow. This has become one of my favorite knitting books ever, since I love small projects that are beautiful and don't bore me before they are done and become abandoned to closet corners.I also love the pictures in this beautiful book; I'm inspired just looking at the lovely yarns.By the way, the baby hat is lovely done in Rowan wool cotton.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great small projects!
I never take on blankets or anything overly large because I need instant gratification. This book is it.The projects are small and even though the yarn is expensive, you can find substitutions. The projects are cute and fun and you can see pictures of most of them on other people's blogs! This is a popular one.If you have enough interest to read the reviews, it is definately worth buying. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Site Design Reference
I was a bit tentative when I started to use this text. The book has some minor editing problems, but if your desire is to really understand site design with an emphasis on drainage and grading plan design this text does the trick and does it well. I would recommend this book to any Jr. land development designer/engineer as a must have reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference book!
This is a great book to have on your shelf. Kept referring to it for my Site Technology classes and I know I'll be referring to it in the future. I found it very helpful and clearly written. Would highly recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Thorough but Poorly Organized
Puchased this text to help review for the LARE exam. The text has all of the necessary information but is not layed out well.Illustrations are not located on pages where they are referenced in the text making it so that you have to flip back and forth across several pages to understand the text in relation to the examples.Read more

Editorial Review

The monks of New Skete have been breeding and training dogs at their New Yorkmonastery for more than 20 years. Their philosophy of raising dogs accentuatesthe essential human-canine bond, whereby owners must learn to understand a dog'sinstincts, needs, and behavior. Understanding a dog, the monks say, is the keyto successfully training him. They first published this philosophy in their 1978classic guide Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pick it up - you'll keep it.
I picked up this book, determined to be a better pet owner. And I'm grateful to the Monks of New Skete for preparing such a thoughtful, educational text for people like me. This is a wonderful book that taught me a lot about my dog, why she acts the way she does, and what I can do about unwanted behavior. From the birth of these loyal, precious animals to testing for temperament, then moving toward training, I've developed a much better understanding of what it means to work with a puppy. Or rather, to train myself. This text is highly recommended for all dog owners, regardless of age, for it contains a wealth of information that should be shared with everyone before bringing home a loving pet such as a dog. Another great book for dog owners that I recommend is "Cesar's Way" by Cesar Millan

5-0 out of 5 stars louisa
Excellent book for the serious dog lover.A great way to prepare for a new puppy.I have read a lot of books but Monks Of New Skete hit every topic on target. You don't have to be a GSD owner to benefit - they address what breed is best for you and shelter rescues. They take you step by step from birth to help you understand puppy's needs and developmental phase.I have bought this book for several people because I think it's a MUST HAVE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked for me
This book specifically talks about German Shepherds but will work for any dog with some intelligence.Read it before you get a dog if you can but if you're like me and you suddenly have a dog and are asking yourself, "now what?" get this book immediately and start reading! It's not very long but it covers everything you need to know. Most important is understanding how to get your dog to respect you.Notice I said respect and not fear.If your dog doesn't respect you or fears you then there's not much chance of actually getting the dog to listen to commands. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars 2 1/2 stars, because it is half a good book
When the author focuses on what she knows - autism, neurobiology, and domestic livestock - this book offers many insights. By applying some excellent existing research in neurobiology about what animals are truly capable of perceiving and feeling (read some of the referenced books for confirmation of emotions in animals) and applying her own experiences with domestic livestock and insights founded in her autism (a much more visual world than "normal" people (her word, not mine)), Dr. Grandin shows how a more visual, detail-oriented animal encounters the world.
1-0 out of 5 stars NO stars for this book!!
What a bunch of high school hallway gossip! The author does not know the difference between white and albino! The 'genetics' discussions on color (which includes people, chickens, horses, and dogs - all of it suspect) and mutts vs. purebred dogs are total claptrap! I confess, I couldn't get past page 87 when the author explains that 'one of the reasons wolves turned into dogs was that nursing human mothers probably adopted orphaned wolf cubs and nursed them at their breasts along with their human babies.' WHAT?? A waste of my hard-earned $. Having read those parts I cannot believe anything that went before or that follows, not that I'm reading any further. How is a multi-published author allowed to put such uneducated 'information' into print? And now she's influenced readers -- a terrible situation. Publisher, where are your pre-publication reviews? Shame on you for allowing this ignorant speculation to be published!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very, very interesting
This book was someone else's bookclub selection, and I think having no expectations when I picked it up really helped in my having that WOW experience that some folks report with this book and others miss. Yes, the prose needed much better editing: overuse of repetition, "stock" phrases, and "hanging" assertions that should have been cleaned up.However, I found the discussions of brain development/evolution, similarities between certain animal behaviors and human behaviors, development of language in different animals, and the coevolution of humans and dogs to be facinating (oops, just gave away the ending!).I found the side discussion of outcome-based audits interesting and enlightening.I also liked Dr. Temple's recommendation that people with autism be hired for baggage checking positions.Great idea! Although the book really goes all over the place, I found it a wonderful opportunity to engage my "seeking/hunting" motivation (you'll have to read the book for that one), and worth wading through the flaws to pick up the nuggets of gold. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Northeast Weed Bible
This book is absolutely the best on weeds of the Northeast. This is a must forthe library of every gardener or landscaper. It is easily readable, yet has the depth for those who need greater information about the subject. Easily, the most practical format, and it has a detailed index for cross referencing between the common and taxonomic. It also includes a chart on grasses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Usefull reference book for weeds
I am a member of the Master Gardeners of Harford Co. Maryland.
5-0 out of 5 stars Answers to "what's this? what's that?" but not all of them
I love this book!I had to have my own copy after seeing one in use at the Cooperative Extension's Master Gardener booth at last year's 4-H Fair.It doesn't ID everything that I find growing around my property, of course, and I definitely agree with S.C. Watson's wishes for information on edibility and invasiveness.Still, this is a terrific book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource when researching builders
I purchased this book as part of my research during escrow on a lot where we plan to build a vacation/retirement home.Even though we would likely not serve as general contractor the information inside is invaluable. It has helped me to understand the right questions to ask during escrow (from surveyors to septic to view to laterals) to ensure the lot, county and sub-division will allow the home we envision. The chapters on foundation, windows, doors, etc are all extremely helpful when it gets down to desiging the home.I'll know what to look out for with the interior and exterior design, drainage and when dealing with the builder.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Covering all of the main topics, this book on homebuilding is a must have for any person intent on building his or her dream home.I keep it with me all of the time for easy referral.

3-0 out of 5 stars Voice of experience--good advice
The best part of this book is its easygoing style. Written seemingly entirely from memory, you'll understand and remember every word. The author skips the commonly available info and writes about the crucial nuts-and-bolts problems of building a house: what do you do if you've drilled a hundred foot well and come up dry? (Keep drilling.) His advice on some details, vapor barriers for example, is OK but you'll want to check the latest thinking on the topic too. Some harmless misinformation is passed along, like that Palladio, eponym for those short-tall-short windows, "invented" them. (He may have invented residential architecture, but those windows date to antiquity. In his day they were known as serliana, after the architect Sebastiano Serlio.) The scientific explanations fall a bit short, and the chapter where he disparages Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's engineering does not show him in a good light. However he does caution you that drywallers, more than any other trade, will try to rip you off with a high materials estimate. Stuff like that you can't get anywhere else. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Doesn't give a detailed analysis of anything, but is a great tool for people wanting a basic understanding of green building, energy efficient techniques, etc.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, but....
This book no doubt makes a lovely addition to my coffee table. I feel so inspired and now.. how do I do it?? I was looking for more practical advice that addressed all my reasons for wanting to remodel green - protecting my family's health and our planet's natural resources and my financial savings. If the intention was to create a stunning, inspiring book - great job. If it was to really explain what green is and exactly how to do it, I think I'd look to books like "Green Remodeling" by Johnston and Master or read Environmental Building News....

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Homes that Make a Difference

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique and enthusiastically recommended
Donna Druchunas is an expert knitwear designer whose work has been showcased in Family Circle, Easy Knitting, Interweave Knits, PieceWork, Knitter's, INKnitter's, and Fiber Focus magazines. In "Arctic Lace: Knitted Projects And Stories Inspired By Alaska's Native Knitters", Donna has created a 192-page, single-volume workshop on knitting and designing lace with an Inuit flair. In addition to the fifteen individual "user friendly" projects provided with careful step-by-step instructions, "Arctic Lace" is enhanced with 171 b/w photographs, 91 b/w illustrations, 28 tables, 11 sidebars, an extensive bibliography, and a comprehensive index. These projects are adaptable to any yarn and demonstrate to even the most novice needlecrafter just how to make the most of luxury fibers. There is even extensive background information on the natural history of musk oxen, conservation efforts, and the fiber quality and use of their fur which is the source of Qiviut (or musk ox down), felt by many to be the world's warmest, lightest-weight fiber and a mainstay of Alaska's native knitters. "Arctic Lace" is a unique and enthusiastically recommended addition to any dedicated needlecrafter's reference collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book on lace and the arctic knitters of Alaska
This book has everything going for it--terrific instruction about knitting lace, amazing information about the arctic musk ox--the rare animal that produces the softest most beautiful yarn around--and stories about the native alaskan knitters who developed their own system for producing gorgeous knitted lace projects based on traditional art and imagery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Your Typical Knitting Book
ARCTIC LACE is not your typical knitting book. Not only does it provide an array of native alaskan designs for every knitting level, it also offers easy to follow tutorials with templates for designing your own unique lace projects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Basics! Basics! Basics!
I found this book to have quite a different approach to teaching the beginner to ride. The author focus on balance and safety, and not moving the rider forward until a they are proficent in basic skills.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!
A fabulous, practical book that addresses a common but "secret" problem of so many horse lovers...fear and anxiety. This is especially distressing to adult riders who used to be able to just jump on and GO!Gincy gives concrete and helpful exercises for us to do on and off the horse. She uses great visualization techniques like Sally Swift. It's great to have a book that addresses riding instead of ground training.Thank you Gincy!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best!
Returning to riding after many years away from horses, I was injured just when I was starting to get my confidence back. This added an element of fear that I hadn't ever had to deal with before.

4-0 out of 5 stars journey of an Art Quilter
Love the book.. but need to advise that it is for an advanced quilter.. not for a beginner...personally, I loved it...

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book
I've gone over the information in this book a few times, and really want to start a project. However, I'm one who needs quiet time to absorb the information, and I just haven't had the time to get "really involved" in a project. The pictures are beautiful, and I'm looking forward to the time I can make an art quilt as beautiful as Barbara's.

Barbara Olson shares a lot of her knowledge and encourages each and everyone of us to become the artist we were meant to be.I would say that this is not a beginning quilter book but an intermediate to advanced intermediate quilt book.Barbara is sharing and inspiring.Illustrations and directions are clear and this is a very readable book. ... I was expecting a book when I ordered this one but its more a pamplet . What I did find is what it lacked in length it made up for in concise information . It helped greatly in training my puppy.

1-0 out of 5 stars just such a disapointment
not worth the 10 minutes it takes to read this booklet

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't put all your eggs in one basket
She has some good points for the beginning dog trainer, however she is not right about pinning dogs down. They do in fact do it in the wild, it is NOT always by choice as she states in her book. When looking at books, be critical as everyone has their own point of view.Stubborn thinking dogs like the livestock guardian breeds need pinning at times, though it's usually through play to maintain your dominant possition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone interested in coins should own this book!
And here in 2006 we have the 60th anniversary of what is commonly referred to as "The Red Book", which is of course a guidebook of US coins which encompasses state coinage such as Massachussets, New Jersey and the other colonies, gold coins from the American wild west as well as the Southern mints, pattern and experimental coinage and essentialy a basic guide that every coin collector, coin dealer, hobbyist and even part time student of coins cannot be without. Edited by one of the greats, Kenneth Bressett, this book also makes a great gift for that budding YN !( young Numismatist) As a professional coin dealer I recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Latest coin information here!
This latest (2007)publication by expert authors gives up-to-date+ values of coins. The color representations of coins is also helpful. The spiral binding allows one to hold the book open while examining one's collection coins with a glass and comparing with photos in the book. The history included with descriptions enlightens and enhances reader's knowledge of the coin of the land.Great book, recommended highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Treasury of Knitting Patterns
I have owned the "Charted Knitting Designs, a Third Treasury" for a number of years now.I am slowly adding the rest of Barbar G. Walkers' "Treasury of Knitting" books to my library. Each one of these books is a must have and worth every penny spent on them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Don't worry!
I don't have anything more to add to the positive reviews of this book; it is amazing.I just want to say that if the price is giving you pause, don't worry, it is WELL worth it!Make room on your shelf!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for designing your own
I've just discovered Elizabeth Zimmerman and the idea of designing my own sweaters etc. She recommended this book, and I must say it has a fabulous range of patterns with easy-to-follow instructions. I am partway through knitting a shawl and didn't like the border design of the pattern I am working to, so I am going to substitute a pattern from Barbara Walker's book. She states how many stitches are needed for each repeat of every design, making it really easy to substitute what you like. This book looks old-fashioned, with black-and-white illustrations, but the information provided is first rate. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars You can learn a lot if you don't fall asleep first.
I am currently enrolled in a floral design program using this book as text.Yes, it is a very imformative book, but Ms. Hunter goes into far to much detail and uses far to many words to get her point across.Maybe it's just me and I am a far more visually oriented person, but trying to learn floral design through the use of a text book so far is not my cup of tea...I think it's a good reference book but that's about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Textbook
I have referred to this textbook throughout the five years since I took my first floral design class.I am now a seasoned designer and sometimes refresh my memory by re-reading chapters.Well-written and illustrated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth buying.
This is a great textbook. Not for casual reading. It has so much information about floral design and care and handling of fresh flowers and foliage. It gives good design illustrations that you can copy and make for your home or for friends and family.I'll be referring to this book for information long after my classes are over. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Text book study
This book is laid out like a text book course of study, which I like, however one important thing to note is that there is no answer key for the tests. The answer key is a seperate book and I have been unable to locate it.Fortunately I work for a General Contractor and have been able to have my co-workers check my answers for accuracy. But as far as being a good source for systematic learning, this book definitely is. ...
