Great book for the serious/professional finisher
This is not a beginner book. However it is perfect for the professional finisher - especially if you take an interest in historic paints and techniques. There are many excellent recepies for historic paints, including calcamine. For the serious decorative painter this book is top notch.

Beyond the Basic Craft
Although this book might not be the choice of a first-time faux painter,it is invaluable if you want the secrets to a classy, authenticpaint job. Classic Paints & Faux Finishes has unlocked the mystery of the strangepaint on my 1850's ceilings and why no other paint will stick to it; hasauthentic alternatives for treating plaster walls without resorting toinappropriate "plastic" paints and it provides simple recipes tocreate beautiful historic paints that are otherwise nearly impossible toacquire. The color and pigment charts are also very helpful. This is anexcellent and inspiringreference book that should join your library whenyou wish to preserve the integrity of the past or when you cross the linefrom craft to art.

Not for the Beginner
This book shows beautiful faux finishes, but goes more into the natural and/or elaborate elements needed to attain the beautiful finish.It doesn't teach the beginner or home decorator the basic steps needed toattain the wonderful results. The Art of Painted Furniture
This book is a delight.I bought a set of candlesticks of Ms. Rosenberg's and just put her name on the internet.What a nice surprise to see she'd written books.Not only does this book show the process, but my candlesticks are in it!I now feel that I could accent other pieces in my room to match this set.Instructions are easy to follow; the methods quite interesting.I highly recommend this book - even if you don't want to paint yourself,her techniques are interesting to read about.

Was looking for techniques and colors used.Came away with more questions than answers. A No Frills, Filler-Free Guide to Painting Your House
This book's unusual encyclopedia-like format is not what the DIY painter might expect upon first glance.Subjects are listed alphabetically("Acrylic"..."Brushes"..."Painting as a Profession"...etc.)with one or more brief yet comprehensive paragraphs under each subject, accompanied by photos and illustrations. There are a *lot* of subjects covering almost anything you would want to know about painting a house; yet this arraingment allows for a quick reference to a particular subject without having to consult an index or otherwise wade through text to find what you want.Especially helpful is a second table of contents, "Do the Job Right", which takes you through a job step by step from "Prep Work" to "Clean up" with page numbers taking you to the necessary subject heading for each step.My only gripe with this book is that the publishers didn't see fit to keep it in print.But if you can pick one up used or at your local library, you can't go too far wrong. ... Faux for DOH!
If you are someone who isn't looking to necesarily start your own business, but rather, have a hobby you charge for on the side then this book is right for you. It won't, however, give insight on how to conduct yourself in a professional business manner, how to deal with clients, what business practices are necesary with regards to paperwork, etc., or how to go about advertising successfully.

Faux For Dough
I thought the book was definitely not geared for a professional faux finisher.It was way too general in nature to really help someone start a faux finishing business.It needs more specific information on business aspects.Most of the information given in the book was just common sense & did not warrant the purchase of this book.There are other books on the market that do a much better job of giving one the in depth information needed to start their own painting business.This book was, sadly, a big disappointment.

Skims the Surface

Such Different Ideas!

I have so many books...many show much of the same thing, but this book really gave some truly different examples and instructions forhow to make your walls or other surfaces look totally unique and special. Lots of illustrations of fun and creative ways of patterning, metallics, texture and color. Good projects but could be found elsewhere
I bought this book with 4 other books from Amazon because I already had another book by this author from a local bookshop. I liked her projects so I wanted to look at more projects from her. To my surprise the book I already had (Practiacal Home Paint Effects by the same publisher and author issued in 2001) is almost identical with this book. This book speaks about the materials used, then described the techniques and then the projects follow. Read more
