Excellent book!
The thing that makes this book great, is that Royals tells you the exact type and name brand of paints to purchase in order to achieve these effects. Showing a color of a "tan" may not be the color you need to achieve certain results, because there are several tans. She shows you the stencils used and takes you step by step.It helps to know a little about shading and highlighting to get the results you're after. Very,very happy with this book. Great price also.

Mouth Droppingly Beautiful
This is my first book by this author and I was blown away. I am not a big fan of the folk-art type of decor BUT there are only a couple of examples of that style in this book. The remainder designs would rival Debbie Travis'.

Excellent color resource
I like the overall organization of the book.It's a unique approach from other color books I have.It addresses the most common questions many of us have about color and then answers them, providing several options for each question. Great photos and explanations.

Good Book for Color Questions
I thought this book was very helpful, but it IS one that you will need to read to get the full scope of information. Even though the picture captions give some information, the real tips are in the text. It is a good complement to the BH&G book "Color Schemes."

Great Photos; Horrendous Instructions
If you buy it used, for a fraction of its list price, PAINTING TECHNIQUES & FAUX FINISHES is an interesting book for those interested in learning about a variety of specialty painting finishes from marbling and sponging to stippling and stone blocking. But because the instructions are written in stilted English, this book can be confusing to a first time faux finisher and as a result fails in teaching the reader how to do these techniques.For this reason, I recommend this book with serious reservations. Let me explain briefly.
Great pictures, but that's all this book has to offer.
The pictures are great, but the explanations are lacking.In doing faux finishes it is imperative to know what colors and types of paints to be used., this book did not offer too much of that.Very disappointing. A waste of money!

My favourite for weekend projects or more

Debbie Travis Facelift - did not live up to expectations.
I have a collection of five of the Debbie Travis books - this is one (Debbie Travis Facelift) that I really did not enjoy compared to the others by Debbie Travis.
Great Companion Guide to her Decorating Show
This book is a good companion guide to Debbie's FaceLift show. It focuses on several of her facelift projects and includes tips and a few step-by-steps for projects. Where this book excels are the photographs of the rooms, her color choices and combinations and the "before" and "after" pictures.

Something to Aspire to
This book (as well as the author's website and training classes) are for the more advanced artist or professional painter.Her work is absolutely beautiful, and achievable if you have some artistic talent.Consider this book after you've had some experience with stencils and general painting techniques.For beginners, try "Stenciling on a Grand Scale" by Linda Buckingham if you are looking for a less complex entry into the world of trompe l'oeil using stencils. Absolutely essential to helping me with my project!
I have a lot of creative energy and when I decided to try theorem stencilling, I bought several different books.However, this one book is the one that I constantly refer to to help me with my projects.It is clear and easy to follow with good instructions and pictures.If you are just starting out, this is the first book to buy.I also recommend her videos, which are the best on the market.

Should be called "Preparation for paintingyour home"
I bought this book thinking it would show many different decorating/painting techniques. This isn't really the case. It mainly shows how to prepare a room for decorating.

This is THE book for interior painting techniques
Home Improvement books tend to be either too verbose or deal with multiple subjects that are just too vague and off the subject.This is one of the exceptions.All common interior painting techniques are discussed, along with great pictures.The book doesn't stray from the subject at hand by showing you the author's home remodeling project. The Best, if you've never done any painting before
The book really goes into details on how to get quality of a painting surface. It tells how to prepare the surface, different types of walls, different types of paints, tips from professional painters and even some decorative painting techniques. Read more

Excellent teaching.
She's a good teacher! Although, the tool used is not the correct tool for professional finishes.Other than that, I think this book is worth the price. She does show you step by step techniques which makes this book valuable. I always refer back to it. Remember, although these books showyou step by step techniques, yours will never come out the same way.

Ok, here is the story, The bathroom was done by my brother in law before I ever lived in the house.To make a long story short it was horrid.The walls where at different levels because the sheetrock was put in completely willy nilly.Thus, the walls at the bottoms had slopes and had a half hearted evffort to fix it by giving it a "CRAPPY" spakle job that believe it or not made it look even worse.

I love, love, love the ideas in this book - all of the projects are very lighthearted and fun. I only wish they had given the measurements of the wood pieces they painted on - there are no specifics for the painted trays, etc. Also, many of the projects need additional purchases such as stencils, which are pretty expensive on the website info they furnish. Not an Artist
Had I not obtained a copy of this book for free, I never would have come to own a copy.I was going to toss it in the trash when we moved, but my children begged me to keep it for comic relief.I am a trained working artist and in my opinion, Ms. Dewberry needs some serious lessons in perspective, depth of field, tonal values, and drawing before she undertakes a book about mural painting.Even my kids could pick out numerous blunders. The cover shows a mural on an exquisite floating staircase in a bazillion dollar home....with edges slopped with paint because they were not even taped off.If I was the new owner of that house, even if I knew nothing about art, my first investment would be some wall paint and a roller.

Only for fans of Donna Dewberry
As a decorative artist I found this book somewhat revolting.Then again, I didn't know Donna Dewberry's work before.Well,she is great at the one stroke painting tecnique if that's what You like, You'll find some of that, but She can't draw at all.Wherever any basic drawing skills are required ,she just doesn't cut it.Her colors are in place though,and the book fills You in on the basics,here and there, but it's not detailed enough for a complete beginner, or would mislead him/her, and just useless for a pro.I keep it as a reference for clients, who like this folksy style,but I find it rather primitive. ... Very good book
I never thought that I'll like another one stoke book after Donna Dewberry's books but this book is really good for beginners and professionals.The first 70 pages shows the basics of one stroke painting. Then there are lots of border examples which can be made easily by the beginners. After them,the real painting comes. 6 beautiful projects are shown step by step so you can understand and make the same projects easily. I recommend this book to everyone.

This is a wonderful book describing basic brushstrokes for Decorative Painter's.There is a good explanation of brushes and their uses.The techniques are well explained and easy to follow.After practicing for arelatively small period of time, I was painting things that I feltcomfortable showing other people.And those people knew what I hadpainted!Actually, they were quite impressed!The only reason I did notgive this book 5 stars is that I have seen some Decorative Painting booksthat are slightly more thorough although they tend to be more expensive.Iwould recommend this book to a beginning Decorative Painter. ... Not what I expected
I was waiting for this book to become available, and bought it right away. I was disappointed, first of all, at how pathetically small the book is for the price. Also, I was expecting to see some really awesome stuff...new stuff. However many of the photos are of murals I've seen in other books on the subject. (To be clear, I'm not saying these artists' works are bad, it's just I've seen it all before) There were a few new ones, but not incredibly impressive. I guess if you're looking for some books with some stunning work in it, I would go for some of these:

bummer
This is not a book for beginners.Most of it is plasters work with a few cabinets.They use the most expensive brushes you can't find anywhere and the paint they use doesn't even give the name of the maker.You'd search for that paint til the cows come home.Pretty pictures though.

Good book for the beginner
I compared this book to several others. It is the best for several reasons. First, it has an introduction with basic techniques and tools.The tool section has actual pictures of every tool you may need.This helps when going out to buy your supplies.Second, the has excellent step-by-step instructions for every technique.Third, the techniques covered range from simple to moderate, but all seem do-able.Other texts have fancier effects and styles, but are probably out of the skill range of the beginner.
