Excellent Book for Beginning Painters
This is indeed a wonderful book.Several sections are not about decorative painting specifically, but about painting in general.These sections are clearly laid out with pictures and lists of equipment needed.They were absolutely perfect for my fiancee and myself - we just bought our first home and have a lot of work to do!This book helped us learn how to sand walls, prime, remove wallpaper, and finally, paint.There's plenty in here for decorative painting too, but if you're just starting out and need a great reference, buy this book!

Great Project Walls for the Entire House
This book has many of the walls shown on her Painted House TV show. I tend to TiVo and tape the shows I enjoy. Debbie has some great wall designs and very innovative wall treatments. What I like about her is she does the entire room decor. The problem that I see with most of the designs in this book AND on the TV show is how VERY TIME-CONSUMING they are. I know these designs get done because she has a team of painters, but I don't. Even though most of her designs are beautiful, they would take A LONG time to actually implement. For example the three marble dado on page 122 and the Elizabethan dining room on page 94. I remember this show, there were soooo many steps and it was all done on the ceiling. That in itself creates a totally different set of challenges.

Want something different for your home, this books has LOTS of unique ideas that make you want to start right now!The directions are clear, consise and easy-to-understand.Ideas for young, young at heart and older people.Very pleased with this book and highly recommend it!

Eye candy and inspiration
I love color and Debbie Travis' books are full of it! Don't pay any attention to the people who discount her books as garish. She is very even handed when it comes to her color schemes--this book includes a whole room done in very pale sea-foam green; an airy, almost monochromatic "zen" room; and even some white walls here and there. Great Book on Trompe L'Oeil artists, their murals and history
I initially picked this book thinking it was an instructional manual. It is not. What it has are beautiful photographs of various famous and not so famous trompe l'oeil artists' works. It includes historical background, descriptions of some of the art but best of all the glorious works of art themselves. I do think this is a wonderful book for the advanced artist, but it is definitely eye-candy worth having in your library.

Excellent book for going to the next step.
Although there is a need for beginning trompe l'oeil painters, it was great to have a book that takes the next step.Even a beginner can get a better idea of what is out there.I will enjoy this book for some time.This book helps with examples of scale, and depth perception to further increase the believability of the illusion.Great book!

Complete guide, indeed!
I can do a passable paint job- but this book helps me assess color and patterns, select type of paint and tools specific to the job, prepare the surfaces and apply the paint. It even guides me through complicated patterns and uses I wouldn't have contemplated at all, without a clear guide. This book takes you through it all with clear advice, excellent step-by-step color photographs. You'll save lots of money and time, and best of all, get easy-to-follow advice to do it right the first time.

Very useful resource and learning tool
This comprehensive overview of decorative painting includes historic American, European and Asian styles.More important to me, however, was the basic information about developing a personal technique, varieties of materials available, practical information about finishes, and more.This book should be the cornerstone of any decorative painting collection.

I LOVE THIS BOOK
This is a great book about decorative furniture painting. McGraw gives creative tips and techniques that I hadn't seen in other books, such as using caulking to create raised effects. She also shows you how to create your own block stamps on a roller to create consistent patterns. Although some of the projects aren't my style, many of them employ techniques that I definitely will use. I bought this book along with "Painted Furniture" by Diane Weaver because I wanted to paint some dressers that had been handed down to me and was looking for inspiration. This one is so much better than the Weaver book. I'm inspired to paint my kitchen table and chairs too. I was going to buy new kitchen chairs, but this book had an example of a painted chair that's exactly like mine. One of my chairs is wobbly and has been glued and clamped several times. This book gave me tips on how to really fix it and although I don't care for the floral motif on the example chair, I'm bursting with ideas for mine.

Easy read for beginners
The title is deceptive as the contents is purely for the beginners and a lot of the projects are decoupaging. It would be a plus if the book includes more painting techniques.Thus, this is not a book for the experienced decorator or painter. Good for beginning furniture painters
I would NOT recommend this book if you are an advanced artist looking for new and fabulous furniture ideas.I was disappointed after receiving this book.This book does not contain anything that is "to die for", just the plain ole basics.However, if you are a beginner, this book will give you the basics for step by step furniture preparation and materials.It has good information on tools and lots of materials that are important to the beginner.Read more

I Love This Book!
I may be a weekend do-it-yourselfer, but, I love looking through this book for period ideas for my 200+ year old Georgian home. Comprehensive Overview of Period Finishes
This is an excellent book for the professional designer or decorator looking for a comprehensive catalog of "out of the ordinary" finishes.The finishes reviewed are generally european in heritage, although many were imported to the US during the last 2 centuries.This isnot a handbook for the weekend "do-it-yourself" decorator/painteras the finishes illustrated require multiple steps and practice to attainthe desired look.The book is an excellent resource when discussingfinishes and 'looks'with a professional painter/finisher. Great ideas!
Are you one of those people who requires paint-by-number picture kits, and dotes on full step-by-step Martha-style craft instructions? If so, don't bother with this book. If, however, you are capable of finding information on basic techniques once you realize that you want to try them, the many different great ideas in this book are just the thing! I would never have thought to tie-BLEACH a garment before dyeing it, for wonderful lightening-bolt effects, for example. All I need is good pictures of good project ideas, with a little info on what types of techniques and materials to use; I don't need someone to hold my hand and murmur reassurances as I go along. I was amazed to see another review of this book dismissing it for doing what it does so well!

A picture book
This book is great for looking at great designs but hardly one to use to create a t-shirt. There is no in depth directions to make any of these t-shirts. I was interested in making new designs for my t-shirts (tie dye)and this book is totally useless. You really have to guess at what they aredoing since there are not many directions to follow. For example: They tellyou to use c-clamps to secure it between wood- well how is it positioned,what size wood ? Everything is very vague in the directions. They show onlyone picture of folding a t-shirt and that doesn't show you anything of howto position it. I have been tie dying for 10 years and hoped for more indepth directions to create new designs. I guess it is back to the drawingboard for me. I wish I hadn't wasted my money on this book. I can go tomany web sites to look at great designs if I just wanted a collection ofpictures. Color Me
This book explained things I never did know about colors and served a a tool when creating my web site.The author take you through the history and usage of colors.It is truely a worthty purchase.

Web Developers with no sense of color look no further...
As a web developer I spend most of my day writing code and worrying about the code working on all browsers, etc. Up until recently I had no desire to learn about color and the feelings behind it. If you are in a similar situation look no more. This book has made a permanent position on my desk and will continue to help me with the design and development of my future projects.
