Editorial Review

Whether you're thinking about stenciling something simple such as a floral motif around a doorway or have set your sights on turning your bedroom into a medieval castle, this guide will help. Stenciling, we learn, comes from an old French word meaning to sparkle, and the lively projects certainly do. Beyond good coverage of all the necessary basics (equipment, fixing mistakes, cutting your own stencils) and the usual candidates for rampaging stencil artists (walls, fabrics, home decorating accessories), the book offers information on advanced techniques (like airbrushing and trompe l'oeil) and adapting the process to unusual surfaces (ceramic tiles, ceilings, exterior walls). And if you've ever dreamed of becoming a professional stenciler, the no-nonsense advice on setting prices, finding clients, and other tricks of the trade will prove invaluable. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very dated
I found this to be very dated in techniques and style. I knew it was ten years old, but I didn't realize the vast changes in stenciling.I didn't find the instruction to be particularly detailed, and learned far more from the many other books available.

5-0 out of 5 stars best stenciling book i've found
I bought stenciling techniques because it has some of the best information i've found on stenciling. It has a variety of techniques and a good list of resources. The book is easy to understand and has information i've been looking for

4-0 out of 5 stars good base book for beginners or advanced stencilers
This book nicely covers the basics such as materials and techniques, with good full color photos to further illustrate what is explained. For the advanced painter, there are some good ideas, again with full color pictures. I've even brought this book with me to a client to show them some samples of what can be done. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The term "decorative" as applied to paint techniques can have anumber of meanings; in this case it refers to faux finishing. This book provides excellentcoverage of the subject with demonstrations, step-by-step pictures, and instructions for 27different techniques, from antiquing to verdigris and including combing, graining, pickling, tortoiseshell, and marbling, among others. Some interesting techniques coveredhere are not often seen in faux finishing books: imitation bamboo, sandstone and lichen, and something called Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I like this book
it has everything you need to know about paint. great for beginners to intermidiate.

4-0 out of 5 stars decorative painting
This is the first time that I bought a used book this way, I would do it again.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for faux finish techniques.
As a decorative painter, I use this book constantly to get ideas and practice techniques.I've found the step-by-step photos and explanations extremely helpful and clearer than in some other books on this topic. Also, the specific methods used here are interesting to compare to those demonstrated in other books on faux finishing -- especially the malachite look.I appreciate the fact that the authors use generic color names rather than commercial manufacturers' names (e.g. burnt sienna instead of "dried pumpkin").Sometimes, though, I've had to slightly adjust the colors I use to achieve the "right" effect. And I do wish it included a more comprehensive assortment of finishes and effects.(Do the authors have plans for a second volume?)But, all in all, it's a great book and easy to follow for both professional and amateur alike.I'm glad it's in my library. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, outstanding, outstanding!
An incredible book which quickly became on of my favorite reference materials when studying antique painted furniture and reproducing authentic designs. Contains tips and techniques for your own projects and presents a good array of antique items as well. Very authoritative and offers sound advice on how to pull off complex projects without the complexities involved.
5-0 out of 5 stars You've got the best here!
You've seen those wonderful grained picture frames or pieces offurniture in the shops for thousands, but never went to a classbecause it was too expensive or none was offered in your area. This book is the answer to your prayers! It is filled with loads of photos of antiques and furniture, etc.that have been decorated with vinegar glazes or with handsome primative-style murals. It is also one of the few books that even reveals how to do smoke graining...the whispy finish on many an old rocking horse or on furniture and smalls. Just add this to your shelf which should also include THE ART OF FAUX by Finkelstein, PROFESSIONAL PAINTED FINISHES by Marx, and DECORATIVE FURNITURE FINISHES WITH VINEGAR PAINT by Russell. All are well worth the investment. Happy Painting!

5-0 out of 5 stars a great guide with terrific comparisons of new and old paint
These authors are among the best at recreating the look of old painted furniture/folk art.Very clear pictures are helpful. Also, they use an easy recipe (basically, vinegar, honey and pigment) which is easy toconcoct for new users, unlike mesy oil based potions or those horriblycomplex formulae or lousy British-based ingredients which noone has everheard of or found. For as cloise to instant gratification as you can get, this is the book to order for all beginners and intermediate grainers. (Advanced finishers can write heir own book.....)Enjoy!! ... Read more

This book allows anyone who is into any art recognize the spectacular use of the acrylic paint with its many illustrations. This book is good to read and to just browse through and look at its illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sybil Edwards' book was easy to follow and understand.
The author did an excellent job at breaking down a somewhat intimidatingcraft medium (decorative painting) into simple steps & brush strokes. The reader gains a better understanding of the techniques and moreconfidence in applying them. (Hint:practice does indeed make perfect!) This book is the perfect starting point for beginning as well asexperienced decorative painters.Don't let the title ("AcrylicDecorative Painting...) fool you, the techniques shown in this book wouldapply to oil painting as well.Sybil Edwards' book shows how to paintdecorative backgrounds, floral motifs and other characters or"bold" painting. The decorative painting book by PriscillaHauser focuses solely on floral techniques (which she does very well). 5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration and instruction
This book has inspired me to be more adventurous when it comes to painting my furniture.I have a hard time imagining what I want in a room, so this book is just what I needed because it provides the inspiration as well as step-by-step instructions. There are plenty of examples from funky to formal, which will help you make your room lively and personal.

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for ideas on complete rooms
Categorized into rooms,(aka living, bedroom, dining) this book starts off demonstrating how the painting of existing furniture can accentuate a room. In some photos, everything is monochromatic, in others - brightly decorated with bold colors and patterns. All photos are color, and show the entire room. Complete instructions for each project are in the back, along with some stencil patterns used.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing
If you aren't an artist you may be frustrated by this one. I really didn't find this useful at all.I like great photos, but when it comes to paint books I want the artist to tell me HOW they did it, technique, paint mixing and all.Nice pictures won't help me mix paints or re-create the look in my own home.I have another book on faux finishing that tells you the ingredients. Ex: mix ochre with raw umber, 1 part glaze to 3 parts paint etc etc.I find that far more helpful. I think there are far better faux finish books on the market.

5-0 out of 5 stars FULL OF INNOVATIVE AND USEFUL IDEAS.
Thinking of re-painting a room or your entire house?Looking for innovative ways to transform your "inner image " of how it could look into realistic form and beauty?Read this book before you begin. It is filled with versatileways to achieve exciting effect in the home with paint, either on the walls or on the furniture or on the floors.Ms Sloan presents painting techniques, the newest material, and provides a list of suppliers as well.Textured looks, pearlized paint, sparkle paint, how to use plaster and patterns make this a very savvy book. Glad I found it before I made a very expensive mess. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful
Definately a useful book, but it missed some of the subleties of doing faux techniques, such as how to soften some of the looks by going over the glaze by rubbing out a second time with a paint soaked rag (rubbing out technique).I completely remodeled a room and finished it with the rubbing out technique and I really enjoy the look.5-0 out of 5 stars great book!
This book covers everything from the simple to advanced faux finishing techniques, with lots of photos for ideas.I loved it!If you want to faux finish, this is the one.The only thing I wish it covered in more depth is how to choose the colors, but even so I highly recommend this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars gave me confidence, but not enough know-how
The glaze technique I tried (colorwashing) didn't turn out the way it looks in the book, but the book definitely gave me the confidence to try it! One thing that would have made this book better is if there had been photos of the actual color swatch of the paints used to create the glaze effects. One of my biggest challenges was trying to figure out which colors to use. Do I go lighter? Darker? How far apart in tone should the glazes be? At first, my two glazes looked exactly the same, as if I hadn't even done anything to the wall! Then I thicken up the darkest glaze with more paint, went back over the wall and ended up with a color that was not pleasing to the eye. Eventually, I made a glaze of the base coat and washed it over the wall, and that toned the whole thing down. It's still not what I wanted, but I'm not touching it again! I'm not sure if I'd have the patience or confidence to try glazing another room. I know it takes practice to get good, but I don't have enough walls to practice on. ... Read more
