1-0 out of 5 stars Does Not Cover Interior Walls even though it says it does!
The Taunton Pro books are usually quite good, but this one is an exception. Even the bullet points on the front are misleading "Painting the interior and exterior of a house." When I think interior, I think walls, but evidently they mean every other surface EXCEPT walls! LOL.
1-0 out of 5 stars Tauntons prints great books, but this is not one of them.
I like Tauntons press books alot. So when I went to find a book on painting I looked for thier book on painting.
1-0 out of 5 stars A rare Taunton miss...
The title is misleading. Interior painting is barely touched upon, exterior painting content is basic at best. Staining and finishing sections are rather rudimentary.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Permanently beautiful art
I am an iconographer and work in egg tempera. I became interested in fresco because the same pigments are used. I have been looking for a tutorial for this art form for years. This book is not only readable, it is informative and does not take the ingredients and methods lightly. Working in the old techniques, such as encaustic, tempera and fresco, is slow, meditative and rewarding. This book is simple and beautiful enough for my grandchildren to enjoy and technical enough for me to use successfully to teach myself. Only problem is British material sources. There are a couple of suppliers in the USA.

5-0 out of 5 stars finally a correct book about the "affresco" tecnique!!!
I've been trained as a professional artist in Italy and currently I run a studio in San Francisco where I am an instructor at the Academy of Art College. There is a great difference between an 'affresco' and a generic'mural' that can be acrilic or tempera. 'Fresco' is a very simple butextremely precious tecnique.I heard people calling a 'fresco' theLeonardo's "Last Supper" wich is not. The Leonardo's painting isa 'tempera', for that reason it did not last. The real 'fresco' lastpractically for ever (look the great 'fresco' painters like Michelangelo,Raffaello, etc. Their works still shine after centuries). Anyway, this bookgives clear and unmistakable instructions to everyone who wants to learnthis fascinating tecnique.Well done! By the way:knowing how the greatmasters did their work does not means automatically joining the Club. Gotit? ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Two books in one, neither especially effective
Although it isn't immediately apparent from a flip through the book, Decorating With Color has two sections. The first, on applying color theory, is pretty good, and made me want to learn more. Ah, I thought. Now that I have the basics, the rest of the book will go into the subject in more depth.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent resource for faux!
I have dozens of books on faux and color theory. This book is the best one. It combines both subjects. It covers the different faux techniques as well as how to apply color. The photos of finished rooms are great, and the photos of each step make learning very easy. Even though I am a professional decorative painter, I still am learning more from this book. ... Editorial Review

The tradition of decorative painting has a long and rich history, spanning many countries and many styles, from the straightforward, large-scale designs of Sweden and the bold motifs of Pennsylvania Dutch to the intricate classicism of England's Robert Adam and the free-flowing brushwork of the Bloomsbury group. This guided tour of outstanding embodiments of the art form collects extraordinary walls, ceilings, beds, chests, cabinets, and other examples, grouping them by motif (fruits and flowers, figures and animals, classical, and abstract and geometric) and offering a very brief glimpse of the techniques used. A 16-page section at book's end breaks out some of the major motifs for those wishing to try this at home. Unless you're quite experienced in the field already, you're better off with one of Sloan's other books to learn the nitty-gritty; if you've already got a good dose of confidence in your painting ability, this is a nice reference for general inspiration. 4-0 out of 5 stars This book is beautiful
Sloan has put together beautiful photographs of a wide range of decorative styles and made her book that more interesting by approaching her subject from the point of view of a present-day practitioner of this (underappreciated!) art form. It will be interesting to the craftsperson but also to anyone who appreciates the beauty of decorative painting and its extraordinary variety thoughout different cultures and throughout the ages. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Boring Faux Finishes, even for beginners
I've done a lot of painting, but not faux painting. Some of the projects were interesting and different, but many looked so obviously fake I cringed. I did give the book some stars for general instructions and the projects that seemed interesting. Unfortunately, there were only a few projects that caught my eye and I even found looking through the book was boring. The photography in the book is good and the instructions seem clear for the few projects I liked.
5-0 out of 5 stars Illustrated with a variety of color photos
Rhoda Rainey's Faux Finishing For The First Time (4483-8, $19.95) provides newcomers to faux with a basic survey of styles and approaches to projects using ordinary objects. Techniques are illustrated with a variety of color photos and a 'how do I' question/answer format lends to quick and easy consultation. All are excellent guides. An excellent guide. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars New Paint Magic -- a 'Must' for a home decorators library
No serious home decorator's library is complete without a copy of this very valuable and informative book. The New Paint Magic book is certainly not for the 'splash and dash' approach to painted finishes and techniques. Instead, the book provides an excellent and thorough approach to techniques and materials for restoring, painting and decorating painted surfaces, including floors, walls and furniture.I used the section on painting and varnishing furniture as a guide to painting an armoire and the results were amazing.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good info...terminology may be confusing
This was my first decorative painting book. I enjoyed it but found that the British terminology could occasionally (not frequently) trip me up Once you understand that "emulsion" is really latex paint you will find the information in this book very helpful. Jocasta Innes is one artist who catapulted decorative painting into the public spotlight and this book contains oodles of examples from basic sponging to trompe l'oeil techniques. I followed her technique for colorwashing in my livingroom and am very pleased with the results. I do recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Short on illustrations...but loads of info
Like the other reviewer, I was hoping for superb instructions from this master of faux finishing...but what I did find was loads of text providing helping tips for many finishes, use of tools, colors and products. My mostvalued section was the Fundamentals. Here, Innes discusses finishes andstains, how to use them, what can go wrong, advantages and disadvantages.Still a valued book to my decorating library. ... Read more

Editorial Review

To truly fool the eye, trompe l'oeil painting must display convincing perspective, proper depth of field, and a credible play of light and shadow. Jocelyn Kerr Holding carefully explores these principles and many more, with detailed explanations of all the basic considerations behind the creation of a trompe l'oeil image and the various techniques available for achieving it, including perforating an existing drawing, painting freehand, projecting a photograph, and using photocopies in a decoupage manner. Despite the "quick and easy" promise of the book's title, however, many beginners will be intimidated by the process as presented here, since Holding offers no patterns (other than a small section of architectural motifs for photocopying) and presumes an existing comfort level with the handling of paint and perspective on the part of the reader to achieve, in her words, "a freehand reproduction of reality." But those seeking a decent primer on the art of trompe l'oeil will find much useful information here, along with some nicely rendered eye-fooling images of book- and object-filled shelves, landscape views, and animals. 5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding how-to guide to decorative painting
Quick & Easy Trompe I'Oeil is an outstanding how-to guide to decorative painting on walls, furniture and even bricks and presents easy step-by-step techniques for using the trompe i'oeil technique. A range of examples of pictorial art from all styles, from still life to Surrealistic paintings, provide painters with many different ideas to choose from, while the techniques are easy to follow and duplicate. Color photos pack the presentation.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fool the Reader
Jocelyn Kerr Holding's book is misleading and insulting with it's self-presentation as a"Quick & Easy" how-to book.In her chapter titled "Easy Trompe L'Oeil"She has the nerve to say "With those of you tackling this technique for the first time in mind, I decided to describe six easy projects simple to draw and amusing to do.The "step-by-step" explinations which follow have been written...so they can be carried out without too many dificulites".But her steps are vauge and useless, rarely haveing more than four steps. You can not learn how to paint wood grain or marble in four steps, although marble is presented here in three meaningless steps. So as a learning tool this book is useless.I would recommend instead Trompe L'Oeil Creating Decorative Illusions with Paint by Roberta Gordon-Smith or Painting Murals by Patricia Seligman, for new muralist. However, if you are a skilled artist versed in most forms of Trompe L'oeil, but are looking for classic examples of the technique, there are some lovely examples in this book.I'm keeping my copy as refrence material, which is how it should have been presented. ...
