Beautiful and Intelligent
Is it possible to be in love with a book?When I ordered Savannah Style, I could hardly wait for its arrival.I wasn't disappointed - in fact, it is even better than I anticipated, having read other reviews prior to purchase.The photographs are gorgeous andreflective, and entice one to have a certain mood when reading this wonderful book.And read it I did, because it is not only beautiful, but intelligent as well.Although Sully is intent on the mystery element of Savannah, it is still a beautiful book to own and love.The question is, 'When can I immigrate?'

Can't find its niche
Wendy Hitchmough's "The Arts & Crafts Lifestyle and Design" is a frustrating, yet beautiful-looking book that covers the Arts & Crafts movement by focusing on how it was influenced by changes in popular culture, the advent of scientific "modernity", and anti-Victorian backlash. The Arts and Crafts Lifestyle and Design is a historical perspective on the design principles and the lifestyle (i.e. how the houses were used) by people involved in this design movement.It is very well written with wonderful photographs.It is, however, organized in a manner as to make using this book for research on the artists or the designs difficult.Rather than highlighting individual artists of the movement and their work, it is arranged by the basic rooms of the houses.For example, dining rooms are discussed using various designers and houses.I would have found it more useful had the individual houses or each artist been discussed more and in the same location in the book.The book does bring to light the changes in the structure of Victorian society and houses with that of the Arts and Crafts Movement. ... History book
This book presents very interesting historical information on the development of fireplace styles over the centuries, and the photographs included were inspiring!(If a photo had been provided for every fireplace described in detail in the text, I would have given 5 stars!)Keep in mind this book's emphasis is on the history rather than the 'how to' of fireplaces.

Beautiful Phogography
Spectacular photographs serve to illustrate a view of Japan that is far different from the bustling cities. This represents three things to me:
My vacation photos turned out better
Sigh, disappointed: poorly composed, lousy photos inside the covers make this book visually un-stunning.Houses and vignettes looked dull, close, shabby, untidy, underexposed, overshadowed, and only very rarely triggered a moment of interest.I felt that I've seen better Japanese country design books and magazine layouts, and I was truly disappointed.Feh.

A MUST for Japanophiles
This is an amazing book, as are all by Amy Katoh. I was lucky enough to live in Tokyo two doors away from her store, and visited it at LEAST weekly.Read more

Lovely details
If you appreciate anything to do with the Arts & Crafts movement, you'll really like this book -- even if you look only at the pictures. It's separated into sections on exteriors and gardens; interiors (architecture); decorative patterns (wallpapers and woven fabric); furniture; softer elements (curtains, rugs, carpets, etc.); finishing touches (ornament, tiles).
For Lovers of Arts and Crafts Homes
William Morris changed people's attitudes towards architecture and interior decoration when Victorian excess was at it's height.I love the use of wood in an Arts and Crafts house.For others who feel this way, this book is a treat.At the back are two useful sections: Where to See Arts and Crafts Homes and a listing of Specialist Supplies for anyone renovating an Arts and Crafts Home.
charming....great (sharp) photos
I have collected various books on William Morris for years - so I wasn't exactly in the market for another - but this is a charming overview of his life and what drove him to accomplish his vision of 'the perfect home' - other than the prose, I was particularly drawn in by the sharpness of the photos - much better than comparable books on the market which sold the book for me - God is in the details, but if you can't see them why bother - this book 'bothers' to features photos which show you what you need to see...Morris' genius ... An Excellent Addition to Your Library!
This book offers a serious, well-informed, insider view of the hotels currently at the avant-garde of interior designing. Many of the properties illustrated represent "la creme de la creme" of the hotel industry in the past decade; and least to say are well worth staying at.

LOVE IT
This book is exactly what I was looking for! The reviews I read on amazon.com convinced me to buy it because they said it was great for someone who owned an art deco style house and they were right.I would recommend it.

Middle Class Art Deco
Many of the Art Deco reference books are very high quality "coffee table" productions that highlite museum quality Art Deco creations.They are fantastic books but as the owner of middle class Art Deco home, I know that objects presented in these books are way beyond my economic means.I can admire them but never afford these iconic art pieces.The beauty of Ingrid Cranfield's "Art Deco House Style" is that it concentrates on more modest homes and interiors.Nearly every page is filled with period photographs of house exteriors, furniture and other household objects.At $16 new or $10 used, this is a very reasonably priced reference book more suitable for the book shelf than the coffee table.A good value and highly recommended for the regular person with a 1930's home.

What makes this book terric?
The book is terrific, no doubt about that. However, I am so disappointed about the 2 reviews, which missed the whole point: What makes this book terrific? The answer? Not the pictures! Definitely not. It is the text.

The French Interior in the Eighteenth Century
This is an excellent resource book for Artists to research the decorative arts.It has influenced my art techniques tremendously . Fabulous color plates with good detail .Highly recommend this book.

An overview not an in-depth view of wealthy french interiors
This book is somewhat misleading in it's title.In many ways "nick knaks of the french interior" might be more accurate.This book has some discussion of French aestetics, and some overall views of interiors, but concentrates on individual items such as furniture, porcelain, clientele and furnishing textiles.Read more

Very Inspiring!
I live in suburbia, in a newer development where all the homes pretty much look the same.I am always on the look-out for creative ideas on decorating because I don't want my interior to look like it stepped out of one of the well-known home decor stores and catalogs.This book was an inspiring find!Lots of pictures and informative text...I have looked at the pictures over and over again.I'm not much into the step-by-step instruction books on transforming found objects so this book was right up my alley.For me, its purpose was served in that it filled my head and notebook with creative ideas for my home.A great book to look through before you head off to the nearest architectural salvage yard, flea market, or out for a day of garage sales.

Quinessential interior inspiration!
My mom sent this to me at college- what a wonderful and inspiring gift for anyone who enjoys antiques, flea markets, design, and the like!Chalmers brilliantly presents the different categories of flea market finds and ways of tying them together to create masterful spaces (check out the table of contents to see what I mean).Treloar's photographs are inspiring; even without reading the text, your mind will absorb countless revitilized uses of 'junk', and begin to piece together unique ideas of its own.A very stimulating find!

Student Furniture -- Grown Up.
Most of us moved into our first unfurnished apartment with a collection of junk furniture that we picked up from our parents, from garage sales, flea markets and who knows where. Later we upgraded a little at a time, buying new things that we thought would better fit the image we were trying to create.
