excellent source for do-it-yourself decorating
This book has it all for the do-it-yourself with fabric home decorator. Everything from oven mitts, curtain pullbacks, pillows, sofa and chair covers, throws, a tea cozy, lampshades, shelf borders and soft sculpture. The book is organized into rooms - bedrooms, living rooms, nurseries etc. Each room is an opportunity for the author to present a color scheme. Of course the color scheme are interchangeable, and can be changed to suit your own home, but it is an interesting way to organize the book and the ideas into a very useful form. Now many of these projects are not for the 20 minute make-over. A few of the ideas, such as the Hungarian Applique Throw, are more for an entire winter of evenings sewing in front of the fire. Many of the projects are not only time consuming but difficult. But with common sense and patience, I think that all of the projects could be completed successfully with a minimum of sewing experience. There is a helpful chapter in the beginning of the book that describes helpful hints to get started and to achieve the best possible results. This book is a long-term gem. How many inches is that?
Maybe I missed it, but nowherein the description did I read that this ENTIRE book is in METERS!!V. helpful for design prof's outside of the US, but every chart has to be converted for those of us stuck in the English system of measure.It would be HEAVEN if the book had been published w/both yards and meters.Oh well, writing conversions in the margin is a good "slow day" project. ... A must for beginners

Let me first say that Katrin Cargill is a very inspirational stylist. The format of all her Home Living Workbook series is user friendly and the instructions simple and adequately illustrated. However, she seems to haverun out of inspiration on this particular book.The projects and the fabricsused are all too common. The Bed Linens book is not useless, but I believethat an improved edition would be necessary to keep up to her readers'expectations.To anyone new in sewing I would suggest her perfect SimpleCurtains. I would also recommend saving money for the wonderfulFabrications, a constant source of sewing inspirations or even sheer daydreaming! ... Read more

Good introduction to decorating with fabrics
This book is good for people who are new to decorating and like fabric craft ideas for the home. It actually contains more information than I expected from the description (it is only 72 pages). The pictures aregenerally good and helpful. One thing I must say though is that on thepictures illustrating machine sewing the fabric and thread are ofthensimilar color and it is very hard if not impossible to figure out where theseams are. Other than that, I think it has enough information to get youstarted. The price is right too. Read more

Fantastic resource.
I've had this book for over ten years, and have made several projects from it.It probably is not ideal for those with only basic sewing skills, as the projects describe proportions rather than measurements (so that they can be adapted to any home), but I have had good results.As a book to inspire, it is wonderful.Paine has created beautiful interiors and has many creative ideas for transforming spaces with fabric. ... Desription of the methods and materials of 40 years ago.
This book is a republication of what appears to be "modern" methods of the 1950s.By the data, illustrations, tools and materials described in this book I conclude that the republication was not updated tothe methods of the 1990s.For example, data quoted is from 1957 through1960, the term "vinyl" is not used and the material is notdescribed, and all tacking is literally done with tacks and not staples.
