5-0 out of 5 stars Great Idea Book for Window Treatments
This fifth edition has all the sketches in color.Just to give you an idea of how comprehensive this is, there are 19 pages showing valances, with five per page.I love this book, as it really opened our minds to the variety of styles available for windows. No more boring windows.
3-0 out of 5 stars Picture guide--okay but not complete
This is a book of window treatment sketches.Unfortunately, it is far from complete and lacks many styles. We do use this book in the trade, but I wish it were more complete--I find it lacking with many new styles. It also lacks many of the current styles being offered by the professional pattern companies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia of Window Fashions
This book has great ideas and beautiful pictures and drawings. It is, however a little outdated in my opinion.Would like to see a revised edition by this author with more up to date styles. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Review of The New Curtain Book . . .
This book contains many ideas for curtains and drapes grouped in a logical order. As a drapery maker, I found it useful as an idea book for clients, but not as useful for the do-it-yourself at home sewer.I agreed with most points in the book, but there were some ideas that I did not agree with, as if it were written by someone who had not actually sewn the draperies. It had many examples of different fabrics, and, thus, was very colorful.Great for some one in my line of work, but probably not as practical for someone who wishes to sew some drapes for her/himself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very pleased
This book is amazing! Its basically a trend book, fabulous ideas, very well presented in beautiful enviroments. I get inspired every time I look at it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading Title?
I was disappointed in this book. The title suggests that it is a how-to book and I was expecting "lessons" in curtain making. This is not at all what this book is about. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this book
I have an old Victorian House and this book has been a wonderful guide. The styles fit in my 12 foot ceiling rooms like they were meant to be. I don't think this book is for modern homes.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Dramatic Drapery Book
When I see the words curtain, I think something that someone with average skills might be able to create. I think this book should have been called The Drapery Book because the majority of the window styles are much more elaborate than what I consider to be curtains. I am not a decorator so I might have the wrong connotations of the words, but this is what comes to my mind when I see curtains vs drapes.
2-0 out of 5 stars Of limited use
I did not find this book to be very inspirational. The only reason I gave it 2 stars instead 1 is because this book would be beneficial to some people. If you like traditional style, like the other reviewers of this book obviously do, this book is probably for you.Everyone else can find other books that give the same level of technical instructions with more range of styles and better photos. The book has a lot of sketches instead of actual photos. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful and Beautiful Book!

1-0 out of 5 stars The world's leading expert on window decorating
I pickup up this book at Barnes & Noble (not to actually buy it; just literally picked it up to look at it) and laughed out loud. It's actually kind of funny that Meredith Books thinks they can pull together some stock photography and then have their staff toss in some text and voila! The public will buy another one of their dogs. I am always amazed that people actually spend hard earned money on stock photo books. Some publishers get pretty good at pulling old photos, out-of-print book photos, photos from their other books that didn't sell and try once more to dupe the public. Not that this is being done here, but the book seems old even though it is new. Why not go to Barnes & Noble or Borders and look at it yourself. You be the final judge, not the marketing blitz from the publisher. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For Ideas Only, Not a How-To
This is an excellent book if you want ideas on possible window treatments for almost any type of window. I was delightfully surprised to see all kinds of unusual shaped/styled windows. Many of the window styles are not covered in most window books (Arched, Cathedral, Celerestory, Portholes, Bay, Bowed, you name it and it's probably in here). If you are a decorator, have sewing skills to be able to construct from a picture or can hire someone who can, this is a wonderful book.
4-0 out of 5 stars 1001 Ideas for Windows
Most books about curtains are primarily geared toward teaching the reader how to make the curtains. For those people like myself, who aren't interested in making the curtains and just want some ideas on how to decorate their windows, this book is ideal. The author has many different suggestions (including curtains, draperies, blinds) for every type of window and even for french doors.

This is a wonderful book, the author assists you with questions to ask yourself, and gives you many options.A book you will use again and again when considering window treatments.I bought another book, 1001 and one ideas for windows, and it didn't compare at all to this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The world's leading window decorating authority
An inspiring guide to window coverings featuring more than 600 photographs, Dream Windows, Historical Perspectives, Classic Designs, Contemporary Creations by Kathleen Stoehr is both unique and complete in its scope of window decorating ideas. Covering chapters such as shutters, curtains & draperies, combination treatments, shades and more, Stoehr shows the latest styles and colors for every room in the house. But that's not all: each chapter also touches on historical perspectives, facts about the products (such as advantages and disadvantages) cost, lifespan, care and cleaning, and most appropriate locations in the home.

Editorial Review

I felt as if I were being told interior design secrets that had been kept from me for years. Curtains have always been something I thought should be left to the experts -- or at least to J.C Penneys. But who better knows what a room needs than yourself? Some of the projects I especially enjoyed were how to make velvet rose tiebacks and a stained glass window shade and how to add painted effects to your curtains with stencils. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I found this book to helpful in several ways. It has detailed sewing instructions along with great sketches and photos. I have made several of the projects and have been happy with all of the results. I am an experienced sewer, but even a novice could follow these instructions. Unlike another reviewer I do not think it is outdated at all. It is filled with classic, traditional treatments as well as some unique ones, --not half brained or trash styles like you find on Trading Spaces. I love this book and am glad to have it in my collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars The world's leading window decorating authority
I really like this book; it is beautifully illustrated and has some equally beautiful photos. I concur with some other comments that "it is not for the beginner." It is an elegant and well put together book. I do wish it had the "search inside" feature so you could see for yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some Reviews are Misleading
This book does contain Tiffany window designs which Tiffany created using Tiffany glass not modern glass. They reproduce very well when scanned. I use them in computer application of the designs. The book which has thepostcards is "Tiffany Stained Glass Windows" by Alastair Duncan(ISBN: 0486253368)which I also bought. This book does have some coloredimages and when combined with the Duncan Postcards you can produce somenice images. Fifteen or sixteen of the postcards are images that are alsoin this book. I would suggest buyers consider getting them both.

4-0 out of 5 stars great projects
If you are into doing windows in the style of Tiffany you need this book...lots of beautiful patterns which can be enlarged at your local copy center. There are color illustrations of many of the patterns which should help in selecting glass but, as usual, the actual glass selection is up toyou. It would be nice if all the glass used was specifically identified(mfgr., cat. no., amount needed, etc.), but hey, then we wouldn't have allthe fun (?) of agonizing over the selection.

2-0 out of 5 stars The colorized images are attractive.
There are 60 designs, with 16 color images on the front and back cover. The line drawings are difficult to determine the color of glass to use. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The world's leading window decorating authority
The worst book ever written on window decorating. Please trust me on this. Home Depot, Mederrith Books and others are trying to rip off the public by putting these outdated books in the window decorating book area of their stores. Look for yourself. What a joke.
4-0 out of 5 stars A great bookfor beginners
Having bought a new home in the fall, I was desperate for custom window treatment ideas and not interested in the local store offerings. Not having sewn for 25 years, I was cautious about getting in "over my head."This how-to book was full of "doable" ideas.I created shades for a guest bath and two bedrooms and am now working on the master bedroom. My ultimate goal is a newly constructed sunroom and even though the book doesn't seem to contain exactly what I am looking for, it provided me with great practice projects and something to show for it.

1-0 out of 5 stars outdated
The ideas in this book are almost laughable. The projects that are shown wouldn't even look good with different fabrics. If you are into lots of ruffles and pouffy things everywhere, then this is for you.If you are into simpler window treatments with exquisite fabrics that complement a room, this isn't for you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Basic Book of Ideas
I feel compelled to defend this book.I am a home-dec seamstress and constantly on the look for a book for clients to look through. This book has proven invaluable to me.It is very clearly organized, the pictures are clear and there are examples of the basic, traditional styles many of my clients are looking for. Many other books try to show 'fancy' styles that are either impractical, hard to visualize due to the color, or flat out impossible to sew. Many of my clients are overwhelmed by looking through "Encyclopedia of Window Fashions", but not this book.
1-0 out of 5 stars From the world's leading window decorating authority
Once again Sunset Publishing Corp. shows us they cannot be original. This book is a complete rip-off of a much better book: The Encyclopedia of Window Fashions. Sunset says their book is "The most comprehensive collection of today's window treatment options in various configurations" which is a flat out lie. The Encyclopedia of Window Fashions has 2000 illustrations, not the 1000 in this book. So for the same amount of money you can get everything in this book, plus a complete historical section (40 pages), yardage schedules for all the treatments, images in both color and black and white, extensive glossaries and much, much more. Why not go to Barnes & Noble and compare the books yourself. Ninety nine percent of what you find in this book you will find in The Encyclopedia of Window Fashions, plus get another ninety nine percent that is not in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good design sourcebook - but not for beginners
As the title states, this is a book of designs and styles. The author assumes that you are already familiar with the basics.Thorough instructions are provided in the author's other book, appropriately entitled, "Curtain Making Course."(The one downside of ordering books on-line - you can't flip through the book before you buy!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, easy to use even for a beginner
An avid do-it-yourselfer that loves to work on decorating projects around the house writes this review. I purchased the first edition 20 years ago, and have been using both editions of the book for some time.I learned to make window treatments from this book.I live in an old Victorian home with 10-foot ceilings. When we first moved in, a long time ago, we couldn't afford to pay to have drapes custom made for 30 windows and no one sold them stock that long, so I decided to do it myself. The first edition of this book was my only reference.Surprisingly, all went well and according to plan.
1-0 out of 5 stars A publisher of window decorating books
The baby is a dinosaur; are you kidding me, this thing was first published in the 80's. Before you buy go to Barnes & Noble and look at it, please. Can I say outdated! Unless you are into retro 80's or want something your Grandmother would be proud of-don't buy this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not for Beginners
I found this book to be very difficult to follow. The writers assumed a certain amount of prior knowledge of both "sewing jargon" and technique. The window coverings were also quite complicated. For a true beginner, I would recommend "Window Basics" by Better Homes and Gardens. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Window Treatments & Slipcovers For Dummies
I bought this book on the strength of Mark Montano's work on While You Were Out and it's fantastic! So many adorable projects, and most of them are super easy and you don't even have to know how to sew well. You can use glue guns or safety pins and still get a really nice, professional look.
