Editorial Review

Luscious photos ripe with shimmering silks, crisp linens, colorful cottons, and rich wools showcase a delicious array of drapes, valances, shades, and tiebacks. With an eye for drama and a fearless use of color, interior designer Heather Luke serves up lots of floor-to-ceiling treatments of chintzes, toiles, sheers, checks, plaids, and stripes, sometimes several at once. Headings are pleated, gathered, tabbed, ruched, buttonholed, bunched, reefed, grommeted, and gobleted; edges are bound, bordered, fringed, piped, and rolled.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Photos, Short on Advanced Details
Great, creative curtain designs, marvelous for inspiration. There are solid instructions for basics such as estimating yardage, seam types, lining, etc. However there are NOT actual instructions for making most of the styles shown. The occasional detailed instructions are patchy (just showing the basics of one detail, rather than how to achieve the whole effect, and sparsely illustrated)I give this book 5 stars for photography and ideas, but only one star for detailed instructions for all but the most basic curtain sewer. There are many lovely curtains in this book I'd love to know how to assemble. It is so frustrating to see all these cool ideas and then find only the barest coverage of the techniques needed to create them!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for making curtains
Curtains are more complex than one would think and this book does a great job of getting you through the basics and into advanced designs. It book starts out helping you choose fabric, curtain fittings and poles. Preparation for sewing both curtains and shades, planning, measuring and caring for your curtains is also covered. A section on estimating amounts of fabric and accessories needed was a big help.5-0 out of 5 stars Curtainmaking--Making them so they flow like the pros
If you are inspired by visualization, this book is for you!I purchased this book primarily for ideas and and I received plenty of them. What stands out far and above everything are the beautiful photographs. They are pictures of the different types of drapes and curtains that Ms. Luke has created for the homes of various clients. She has created alot of wonderful drapes that also serve as creative artwork.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Anyone can do it!
This book is an invaluable source for fresh window dressing ideas, as well as old favorites, that can be easily constructed using the clear, detailed instructions. The drawings and photos really clear up any confusion, too. I loved the "materials list" because it usually reminded me ofsome item I would have forgotten at the fabric store!Even though I havesewn many window treatments, the "Tips" always solved someproblem before it messed up my project!I highly recommend this book forboth the novice and the professional who is looking for some fresh ideas.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, practical projects
This book succeeds at two levels. First, it does what the title promises to do. It shows a dozen or more projects, all centered on the common theme of paper and light. There are window shades, lanterns and screens, laid out in plenty of detail for the skilled reader to follow. The projects differ in complexity, from kid-friendly simplicity up to tasks requiring some light carpentry and electrical wiring. There are no exotic tools or materials required - any good craft store would have just about everything, except for some of the unusual papers. Even they aren't compulsory in most cases, lots of alteratives will work well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners!
True, at first it does look a little like a coloring book but that's the fun of it. Why does everyone always need examples? What happened to using your imagination? This is a form of art. This book gives you the room to make decisions about the colors and textures of glass you want to use, which is what I like about it. Actual stained glass artists create their own color combinations. In order to preserve these type of books the pattern is photocopied and then each section is cut out so you have a template to use to cut out the glass. If anyone's worried about color then just do what others do. Either use colored pencils to color the pattern so you have an idea of what it will look like or pic out glass that appeals to you. It's really not that hard.

2-0 out of 5 stars Art Deco Book Review
I was disappointed to find that there were no color suggestions for any of the designs in the book. Also, the presentation of the drawings made the book look like a children's coloring book.Several of the designs wouldmake nice stained glass projects despite the presentation. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading
I recently became an independent wine consultant with The Traveling Vineyard. In short, I conduct wine tastings in people's homes.Part of the training for this position was reading this book.I highlighted, made note cards, and find myself constantly referring back to it.The best vintages for the varietals was by far, my favorite. But I have also used a lot of the facts to play trivia games at my wine tasting events.I would have liked less emphasis on French wines and more emphasis on American wines, but that is the only negative I can think of.Also, the food/wine pairings are really elaborate and I don't think most people would be found cooking these items up in their kitchen. But all in all, it was a great book to read to become familiar with the varieties and where they are grown.I just purchased a couple of books by Andrea Immer as I started watching her show and I'll be interested to compare the two styles.I'm sure I'll review her book here as well!

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun & accessible way to learn about wine
First and foremost you will ENJOY reading this book ! You can either skip around or go through it in a logical progression of basic wines to very fine wines of each region and grape variety.Ultimately you will come away with literally tons of information about how wine is grown, made, tasted, bought and above all enjoyed. Plus you will have lots of interesting tidbits to impress your friends with when dinnertable conversation pauses. All around an enjoyable experience.

3-0 out of 5 stars Snob Alert!
What I enjoyed out of the book was the "best bets" recommendations for what vintage years to purchase for each wine/region.What I did not enjoy was that many of the wines Zraly recommends are in the high end range.I just looked up one of his favorite Cab. Sauv. from CA--it sells for $100.I found some of his terminology confusing--Burgundy is a region, yes, but then he switches around the terminology for areas w/n a region--Cote D'Or and Cote de Nuits w/n Cote D'or--sometimes refering to all of these as "regions". At one point he calls a Pouilly Fouisse a "quality level" of a Maconnais.???In the Rhone Valley he talks about Chateauneuf du Pape, but does not even mention Gigondas-- a similar style, but more affordable than Chat.du Pape.Gigondas has become more popular lately- and deserves a mention.Zraly's emphasis is on French red wines. He mentions briefly CA, WA, OR, and NY wines. I did not get much out of the wine and food pairings as many of the pairings were recommendations for foods I do not find myself eating: turbot w/ hollandais, shad roe, Breton lobster, Dover sole, etc...Read more

I really wanted something besides standard drapes in our new home. This book contains a wealth of ideas with photos showing the whole room, not just the window. The colorful photos are quite large (unlike the cramped decorating pictures squeezed into the magazine) and sometimes even a double-page spread.

I am a professional home-dec seamstress and use this book for client reference. The vivid pictures are of fully, beautifully decorated rooms in various styles. Many are easy to recreate. However, for those needingdetailed instructions, you would need to find a pattern to recreate some ofwhat you see in the book (like the valance on the cover). Good hints onchoosing style, fabric, and on measuring. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best beginners' reference I've found
I took a beginners' sewing class that taught me the basics of sewing, and as my first solo project, I decided to make curtains for my living room and kitchen.I got practically every book that the library had on the topic of curtain-making, and I can tell you that this was the best one for an extreme novice.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Beginners should be VERY encouraged after purchasing this book. The directions are written in plain english and the photographs are terrific step-by-step guides. Every project was presented in an easy-to-learn fashion, and they tell you exactly what you'll learn and what you'll need. A must for anyone who wants to learn and is frustrated by the lack of true beginner sewing books.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
