There is not a book at the city library that I have left untouched that has anything to do with Log Home Construction.B. Allan Mackie's books caught my undivided attention, and put to rest any questions I may have hadabout building my own log home from scratch.`Log House Plans' is anexcellent resource to thumb through and find just the dream log home youwant.Just as it's name indicates, it is not a book to teach you how tobuild, yet a book to help you find a plan you want to build.It' is fullof plans that range from simple to extravagant, but mostly cost effectivedesigns.There is even a full section that covers smaller efficient yetattractive designs for the family on a budget. I certainly found thedesign I wanted.A wonderful advantage of this book is the detail of allthe designs.It contains no blue prints, but there is enough informationin the design to aid an architect in drawing up accurate blueprint withoutthe need of filling in the blanks.You may also order the blueprintsthrough an address provided in the book.If you are considering building alog home, and you are looking for good ideas, this is by far the bestresource on the market.If you want to build the home with you own hands,then do not pass up `B. So-so
This book wasn't as large and the homes featured in it weren't as fresh and interesting as I had hoped. But I love all aspects of cottage design, from home interiors to exteriors. Thanks to another review, I picked up two other cottage books that do a great job. One is Second Home from the Better Homes and Gardens editors----------I love Second Home because it takes me on tours of cottages around the country while also giving me tips I can use for decorating or even building. It's a great book for just paging through also. Big photos, lots of information but yet it quick to read. I also like The Cabin-----------It's a beautiful book to look at but it doesn't offer the wealth of information that Second Home does.

Smaller than I expected
This book was smaller than I expected. A small book with lots of small pictures. Kind of disappointing. Other books on cottages and second homes do the job getter. I have found these are my favorites: Great Picture Book

great treehouse descriptions.
not only does this book have wonderful pictures, but it has wonderful stories that tells you about the personal life of some of the people who built and/or live in the treehouse. Including, myself.

A Feast For The Eyes & The Imagination
This is really a dream book to savor and enjoy and look at again and again whenever you need to lift yourself up. Beautiful pictures, and many different designs, from all over the world. The stories alongside the pictures are more about the dreams before and the experiences after than the actual building. But the books out there on actual building are short on designs, so this book really helps you see what others have done. My only regret is that the treehouse on the front cover and the treehouse pictures in the introduction are not featured with aparagraph or two as are the other 22 treehouse articles. However, overall, this book is a delight to read and enjoy. Also, a good resource section in the back. Definately, 5 stars! ... Read more

Not a helpful book
I hoped this book would give me some kind of help building a log cabin.Instead, it was a series of examples of just how stupid a person can be. (...I have built up my body's tolerance to smoke, so I wasn't in any danger... duh!)

Just ok
Not my favorite cottage book, and I own many.There was just nothing special about it.It didn't inspire me as I had expected.I didn't enjoy the reading - didn't hold my interest.It does have some nice pictures.

Sorry to say.....
This was just an O.K. book.I love decorating books, this is my least favorite.Usually decorating books inspire me and I can't put them down or at least have to fill the book with post-it notes to mark great ideas.This book I looked at,once maybe twice... it didn't give me the inspiration to do anything. Pictuers are nice... but the context,the way its split up,then and now is just boring .There are much better books on cottage decor out there. just have to say sorry but not my fav.

The Classic Coffeetable Book
This book has beautiful interior and exterior photographs of new homes built with old,old logs. Great ideas on decorating log homes, from western to camp-style to classic. I have bought dozens of log home books, and this one is the best.

Porches as Bastions of Liberalism?
Liberal slant and vulgar language? Well, I guess some people would see even topless statutes of Justice holding her scales in the cool, august halls of federal buildings as vulgar.
Disappointed
I love porches. I want one on my home. I was ready to read about porches. I couldn't get through the introduction of this book. The obvious liberal slant and the use of vulgarity just turned me off. I bet there is some really great information in this book but if I have to be bombarded by the above mentioned I will find my information elsewhere. Very Interesting read

Wide Ranging and Helpful Advice
Gary Schroeder has written a book that will be a goldmine of information for anyone who owns a log home that is more than a few years old. Plenty of practical advice for caring for, restoring, and fixing old log homes. He covers a large variety of topics: log home finishes and finish problems and repair, sanding versus waterblasting versus sandblasting, chinking repair and replacement, insect damage, decay . .the list goes on. Amply illustrated, plenty of color, vivid diagrams. And Gary knows his stuff--he also owns Schroeder Log Home Supply, one of the US's top log home supply stores. If you want practical help with how to diagnose log home problems, and fix them, this is the place to start.You will not learn to be a professional chinking applicator by reading the section on chinking, this book is more of a "log home owner's manual," not an encylopedia of log restoration techniques and tools. (Just as a car's owner's manual does not tell you step by step how to rebuild the transmission.)

Needs updating
This book needs a major overhaul. Information and photos are out-of-date. Very superficial information for anyone on the verge of buying and building. Printing quality is very poor -- some of the photos are so dark they are indistinguishable - copier quality in fact. For the first time ever -- I sent a book back for a refund.
