An Interesting and Informative Local History
On a recent trip to the Carolina Outer Banks, I saw a book called NAGS HEADERS and found myself asking "Who are these Nags Headers?" Since I have enjoyed reading about various New England sea coast people, I thought I would broaden my knowledge and extend it to the people of the North Carolina coast.
Good history from the families who were there;good pix too
Great book for for getting the inside scoop from the people who were there.I enjoyed rehashing the stories from the book with my grandfather, 89, who still lives in Manteo; he first got to the OBX in the mid 1930s.I have lived on the OBX and also visited there my whole life so it was great to relate with the history and personal family narratives.I especially liked the Casino stories, and the exciting storm and war memories too.Good pictures.

Southern journalist does right by her Southern subject
Souther journalist Susan Byrum Rountree does an admirable job of conveying the flavor of Nags Head--both the old Nags Head and the new.Before the bridge over the sound went in in the mid-20th century, Nags Head was a sleepy hamlet year-round with little to do other than swim and walk on the beach.Though it's now a booming vacation town (a little too booming for some folks' tastes!), it maintains much of the flavor of its younger self and Rountree does a terrific job of capturing the elusive charm of the area.Read more

Did it myself
The book is an excellent primer and provides sufficient guidance for even a novice though a basic knowledge of hand tools is necessary. The instructions are clear and though the illustrations are hardly artisticthey are a good visual companion. If you are in a remote or secluded areaand away from the utility infrastructure, and building codes, this is oneof the best books to start doing it yourself with a rustic flaire. ... Read more

The most informative and entertaining book on this subject
It was to my great advantage to be spending the summer of 1992 in Lenoxwhen I read this book, purchased from the local village.Carol Owens has provided a supurb look into the lives and lifestyles of the gilded agedsuper rich as well as an excellent portrayal of the architecture of thesummer cottages of the Berkshires.Filled with historical facts and"twice-told tales", this book is a rare gem giving the reader avivid and pictoral view point of life during this era among the socialellete and powerful industrial magnates.I was able to see many of thehomes by using Owens' book as a tour guide. It was thoroughly fascinating! I even got a bit carried away when I decided to take an unauthorized tourof the massive (and deserted) 92 room Elm Court, once owned by EmilyVanderbilt Sloane White.The local police were less impressed with myventure.Lookout for the flowershop owner who works out ofwhat used tobe Elm Courts' carriage house--he is a real snitch.If you enjoy readingabout the "400" and the gilded age or the architecture of thisperiod, you must read this book.It is a real treasure! ... Good Picture Reference
Very nice photographs.Good intro to the craft...but lacking a bit. (There is no mention on `stump chopping' at all.)Has a good tree reference/care at the end.It was my first bonsai book...It's a keeper.

This book was great and answered all of my questions!
I highly recomend this book to any one who wants to become serious about bonsai.Great photos and explanitions.

Not Inspiration for your Country Home
This is a photo essay with beautiful pictures. I was interestedin Cabin ideas and this doesn't have any unless you want to vacation in a Mongolian yurt or an African mud hovel. Most of these homes wouldn't suit the homeless. 3 stars for the pretty photos but hey...I want my money back!

I love LH books but...
I love LH books and read them before there was a TV show- I remember how at age 10 I enjoyed reading about Laura and Mary in the Big woods and how facinating it was to read about playing in the attic among all the food and goods the family had in storage. Laura Ingalls Wilder was so decriptive about the foods and acitivities of her childhood that it made you hungry for what they were about to eat and you felt a part of what was going on.
Not just a cookbook
The Little House cookbook is more than a collection of recipes.It's full of historical food tidbits.Each recipe if prefaced with an exerpt from the Little House book where that food is mentioned.This feature lets you know you are recreating a dish that Laura described in her book.Since Ma did not write down her recipes, Barbara Walker had to do research to find similar recipes to those described in the Little House series.But because of the explainations regarding the new recipes, there is no suspicion of unauthentic foods. Plus, they taste great.The white bread is a family favorite.This is 100% recommended for Little House fans and those wanting to explore frontier foods.
